I think this means that if some kid was convicted of writing "I love somegirl" on a webpage and was convicted of and punished for "crime A" then he cannot later be tried for violating "crime B" because at the time of the offense "crime B" did not exist.
So if the act we're debating today were passed, retroactively or not, someone could not be tried for a crime that did not previously exist regardless of the statute of limitations.
I think the whole "retroactive" think will get cut because it's clearly unconstitutional. At least I hope so.
All Black Doug-Howlett became The PC Company's first customer, leaving the Auckland showroom at one minute after midnight with a brand new, Windows XP-ready machine.
Does that mean Doug-Howlett's a black guy? I've never heard "all black" before. If that's what it means, I think it's funny the NZ press thinks that bit of info important enough to include. Or does it mean something else?
It's a fraud. For the individual, it'll cost more (subscriptions), be slower, (as you said), and be less configurable because the user is now part of fee based co op (he has to cooperate, he is not in charge
The users, operators, and programmers of distributed systems face many problems. Users of the World Wide Web are subjected to random performance and service disruptions. Replacing or upgrading a personal computer, workstation, or server is very difficult. Even a moderate size computer network requires significant expertise to configure and maintain. The principal programming abstractions available today?processes, threads, files, and sockets?do not adequately address the problems of managing locality, availability, or fault tolerance.
And if it is true can they provide some evidence, a link to an example or something?
Just seems like they're "reaching" for a justification for distributed (subscription based) computing. The writer provides no evidence of the problems addressed, and does not give evidence that distributed computing will solve any of them.
It seems to me that if their customers had oogles of free time -and- the requisite skills the company might lose money when everyone decides to just buil their own after downloading the source code from the website.
But many in that category would have done it themselves to begin with. I don't think they have anything to lose by posting the source and giving credit where it's due. It seems the original poster would still buy it, he just "wants it to work".
Maybe the company isn't aware of what they bought and what's required of them. I know they're website offers scant information.
What exactly is an enterprise operating system, and is there an application you need that is supported on Win2k but not Win98? Broader question, is there any reason for people not running a server to go beyond windows 98 SE?
A friend of mine asked me to upgrade his laptop for him, an old Tecra. 'Course all I could do was put more ram in it, but anyway I upgraded him to Win98 (from Win95) installed all his software careful to make sure nothing started up at boot time that wasn't essential. Two days after I gave it back to him he put Win2k on it. When I asked him WTF? he said he need an "Enterprise" system.???It's not just him. I know at least a dozen people who think that way, and even after you demonstrate that their system will boot slower and showing them how much ram is being used they just look at you and say, "but it's for professionals. I want it"
Knee-jerk? There's that word again. What occurred on September 11 is almost incomprehensible, but I'm tired of people trying to out-soundbite each other. And that's what John Katz's article is- one soundbite after another. Reaching for "solutions" that won't solve the original problem but will create new ones IS the knee-jerk reaction being promoted by the media all day long, the above Katz article being an example. IN THIS FORUM a paid commentator should be a little more knowledgable about the technology he's commenting on.
Mod me down, whatever. FYI until today, I have never posted a comment critical of John Katz. But the article is not well written nor is it insightful, it is the same rhetoric I hear on CNN all day. Anyone who dares to disagree is unpatriotic, or antiamerican.
I like the way you think. The only way to end terrorism is to have some insight on what motivates them, and then discuss ways to take away that motivation. It's tough because making it harder for them won't make them stop trying, but "taking away their motivation" could be seen as a reward and have an adverse effect.
This problem was centuries in the making and will likely require generations to fix. Much like racial inequities in America.
There may well be countries in the world that sacrifice virgins to the volcano god, or execute people on the spot for insulting a police officer. I'm not one to feel grateful because someone else is worse off than me.
It is not enough that I can post an anti-government comment on slashdot. The whole enchilada, and nothing less, is required. There can be no compromise here, essentially because there is absolutely no one in the universe with the LEGITIMATE authority to make me compromise. There are plenty of people who can effectively take away my freedoms (Jessica Alba), but my post was about the fact that people already have the concept in mind. As long as people are forced to compromise on this then there will be potential for revolution or terrorism, and we should minimize this potential not give it food by forcefully curtailing individual freedoms.
The poll is meaningless. The people of the United States of America and their government simply do NOT have legitimate authority to abridge any of the aforementioned rights. As in "born with certain inalienable rights." The Constitution protects rights that EVERYONE was born with, it does not grant any rights. Any government which does not honor this basic fact is setting itself up for eventual destruction when more people are able to justify revolution.
I don't know if Slashdot has much of a budget but if John Katz is being paid for these articles I think you should also hire an editor, and I'm not just being sarcastic here. Think about it.
Privacy and the desire to keep it had 0% to do with why some kids parents didn't come home last week and reading every email in the world in real time (even if NONE of them were encrypted) will have an effect on terrorism. They won't use email.
Yes John, human beings tend to like speaking to people who agree with them.
Using the Internet to send Email, even encrypted emails does not make someone technologically advanced. HEY ZEUS the Crisco!
I give up. I remebering feeling some sympathy for John Katz because every article he posted would just get flatout slammed. But if John Katz is going to do real reporting he should go out and find some facts we don't already know. If he's going to do opinions the fercrissakes somebody make him have an opinion. And give some sensible, thoughtful arguments that are at least difficult to refute. Bottom line is I resent that this guy has a job. Whats he do, party all week, wake up on Tuesday afternoon and crank out a movie review? Whatever.
The only way to stop terrorism is to take away any reasons to become a terrorist. This fact is so painfully obvious yet gets no "airplay". I know it's like "The end of all social injustice in the world? Hooray!", but could we at least not go in the opposite direction here? Reading my mail and tapping my phone doesn't give me a sense of security, it pisses me off knowhutimean?
B: Military actions which are being planned, up until the time when they are executed.
Surely you jest?
Wars typically last for more than just one battle.
You mean the Armies of both sides should exchange
after action reports after each enagement?
By your language may I assume you were/are an officer or an analyst? Anyway, clearly he means that some bigshot should get behind a podium and answer questions.
I'll just run thru the rest: "C:" Yes, that's almost verbatim what he said.
"D:", Again, pretty much what he said, i.e. "except for basic recon"
I think his point may be that there are way too many instance of information being classified merely to prevent the embarrassment or outright arrest of government officials. The parameters he gave for classified material are almost identical to yours. I agree with both of you.
R.
From a legal POV, this is a moot point. The Constitution does not grant me any rights. There are several inalienable rights that I was born with and these rights may not be voted away by anyone.
In the real world however, there are people with guns who operate huge prisons and I may find myself there if I don't "go along" with the mob.
I will not go along with the mob. The Founders intent in writing the Constitution was to prevent the government from rallying the masses behind some tragic event like this one. Some points:
My personal communication belongs to me. Period, end of story, shut it, zzzzp!... I OWN, WAS BORN WITH, NO ONE MAY TAKE IT AWAY, the right to secure said comminications IN ANY WAY I CAN.
Thank you, you may now go back to trying to out-patriot each other.
I had 5, an extra one on the top left. The Army dentist took all 5 out at the same time, gave me *FOUR* Tylenol III's and 24 hrs quarters. I still hate that guy.
Even if your contention is valid and it is better to have all your info in one place why should that be controlled by MS. You may trust MS but others of us who are accutely aware of the track record of MS when it comes to security are scared witless. Combine that with the unethical and sleazy characters who are in charge of MS and you have a recipe for disaster. Have you ever heard Ballmer, Gates, Allchin, or Mundy make a public statement that did not contain at least one lie? I haven't. Why should I trust these people?
I see alot of posts questioning MS's ability to keep information secure but (for me at least) MS is who I want to keep the information from. You would have to be a fool to trust MS.
The Geode is designed to be modified, hacked, whatever. I've seen comments on slashdot before lamenting the lack of a "cool" form factor for embedded Linux projects. So here is one. I'm not even a programmer but I'm going to buy one just to see how many days I can go without sleep.
The Linux4.TV website mentions the Geode as the reference model. Doesn't that mean someone can use a different platform if he wants to?
Hook 'em young, I guess. Never mind that, like it or not, Windows is a corporate standard that people need to know to get "standard" jobs. This is great for the kids that want to be sysadmins or network admins, even programmers, but for the girl that really just wants a job on the side as a part-time secretary and spend the remaining time with her family (not uncommon, even these days) this is not going to give her the education she needs at all. Hell, even for people that need to do design docs in Word, this won't help. Please, don't feel the urge to mention StarOffice or OpenOffice as we all know they just flat suck.
Good money decision, but really bad in the long run.
At first anyone might see it that way. I mean MS Word and MS Excel are the two most commonly used office programs right? So you'd be doing a disservice by not teaching them right? Wrong.
If you can use a word processor then you can use a word processor. If you can use a spreadsheet program then you can use a spreadsheet program (i.e. you know what a "formula" is). It's more important to grasp the concepts then to memorize keyboard shortcuts.
For instance I was looking for a manual on Photoshop. Most of the ones I found promised to teach me what all the filters did and how to navigate my way thru all of the menus. Meaningless. I already knew how to do that without a 50 dollar book. But I found one that taught me the basics, how to use different colorspaces to your advantage, details that were independant of the graphics program. This is truly education because it enables the student to use any program he/she wants to or is forced to by their future employer.
Man I am so sick of people posting comments like "At least you're not in...(Russia, China, etc.". Who gives a damn how great America is "compared" to anywhere? Statements like that are like saying "Hey, it's okay if we do something stupid as someone else does it worse." Shutup with that already.
You seem angry that someone has insulted FDR. There are many (including myself) who think FDR sold us out. Everyone I've met who feels the same way has arrived at this opinion thru much thought, contemplation and research.
You wish to refute his statement but you do not. That a private citizen(s) has won a case(s) in court on Constitutional grounds has nothing to do with with the question of whether or not FDR caused the Federal Government to have more power that it ever had before and in some areas more power than the Constitution actually granted.
As far as emigration goes, I think his intention is to change the situation, mold the political environment here in the United States into a form more to his liking and then offer YOU the same option. That is GET the *&@ out of here if you don't understand the fundamental concept of "America" is that if you don't like it, YOU have the ability to cause change.
We already have the basis for an organization(s). They're called LUGS.
I know I haven't been to a meeting in about 6 months but I'm going to start making time again, and I'm going to bring this up.
The thing is, without an organized assault we can't win anything. If all of us who are reading slashdot start supporting our local LUGS by actually showing up to meetings and once in a while actually bringing donuts we could really do something. This might go as far as a political party.
If you think forming a political party is too strong/over-reacting then think a bit more. This is political. It's much more than just the DMCA etc. It's about individuals and small businesses being forever "locked out". It's about once again leveling the playing field so that to make tons of money you actually have to have some original ideas and be willing to sweat a little.
There are some "third parties" out there, but they seem to be blinded by the sparks flying off the grinding wheel. Imagine a political party formed of people who actually think. People who solve problems for a living. That's what we need now. If you don't do something now, you're children and grandchildren will suffer for you'r inaction.
I think the quote (anyone know the rest of it?) goes something like "...your children will be born penniless slaves on the continent they're grandfathers conquered". - Thomas Jefferson

The U.S. Geological survey has a "nifty" page describing it's efforts in"finding those fractures that have a high hydraulic conductivity". Maybe they can map the wall to see if there are any cracks.
Amen.

You are probably preloading at boot time. I don't believe anything on Windows2k loads in "1 second".
