Since I have teenaged kids, I can speak with some authority on txt'ing in the US. Kids have been doing it for a while - only they do it on the home PC and not through a phone. Computer usage in US homes is over 50%, while its under 25% in Europe last time I checked. Mobile phones are still viewed by US consumers as being a business tool rather than a personal item.
The article discusses all the money burned on the project up til now, arguing that more money should be expended to finish the job. While a 24x7 view of the rotating Earth might promote world peace, I don't think we'd be seeing anything new science wise.
So campers, if Al, Oprah, and enough people want to see this bird fly, then I suggest they start by setting up a Paypal account and get the cash to launch it themselves. The Russians will do it for less than $100 million. Heck, maybe they can take a loan for the Democratic Soft Money account (ok, the Republican one too - amybe you can pitch it as a missle defense component:^).
Seriously, we have the means, willingly provided by a number of countries, to make our space exploration dreams come true. We need the will to make them happen.
The vest might be practible, but I can't see anyone wearing it into their favorite pick-up bar. The vest and all the RF and EM emitting devices might be an effective male birth control method.
Doug talks a lot about "Free" software - as in no-cost, but not about "Free" - as in free speech. I'm wondering if this is his misunderstanding of the concept, or a general message Microsoft is trying to push
I was at the MIT Enterprise Forum last week and listened to the chief analyst from Deutshe (sp) Bank discuss the Optical Networking market. The US has WAY too much capacity right now due to a lack access from customers. Optical Networking companies, after investing huge sums in laying a backbone, now know they still have more investing to do. This home service is an example of the new "first mile" thinking. As I type this, I'm eye-shot for the new fiber bundle AT&T just strung in front of my house:^)
About 500 years ago, a guy named Martin Luther got this crazy idea that it didn't matter how much you knew, or how much stuff you had - God loves us all the same. I can't tell you all the refugees I meet who upon having kids decided to move out of the valley. It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want my kids to grow up there.
Linux was an operating system developed over the Internet and not from some corporate mecca. We've just entered a new century were it won't matter where you are, you can still be successful (even in Michigan:^)
Sorry if I'm rambling - I'm writing this on a fever:^~
I remember doing similar benchmarks when I worked at Sun. We were introducing some PC emulation, and normal benchmarks didn't give the whole story. So, we created our own. One example was to do a search and replace on a 250 page Word document. Another was running a Black-Schols analysis in Excel. Do any readers have a new Sony Picture Book they can spare?
Just installed Galeon and am using it right now to post this message. This browser works great on my P150 laptop - finally have something that lets me browse and not bring my entire system to its knees (Like M16).
The late Mark Weiser of Xerox PARC wrote an article for Scientific America in 1991 that defined much of the ground work for things like Project Oxygen. Give it a read, it changed my career.
While Motorola's efforts are commendable, I just can't trust my home network to a "burned-in-the-rom" solution. There's too much going on with the script kiddies and their "splotz" - I need a solution I can adapt over time.
Personally my money is on Coyote Linux. It runs on a cheap 486 and is easy to configure!
Acquisition of Slashdot.org. In June 1999, we acquired certain assets and assumed certain liabilities relating to the Slashdot.org web site from BlockStackers, Inc. for consideration consisting of a $1.5 million cash payment made at the closing, and contingent payments of $2.0 million of stock valued at the initial public offering price issuable upon the closing of this offering, up to $3.5 million in cash and up to $5.0 million in stock valued at the initial public offering price and payable during the two years following this offering. The amount of cash and stock consideration that is contingent solely on the continued employment of the principals of Slashdot.org in the amount of $6.3 million will be recorded as a compensation charge ratably over the period of the payments. The amount of stock consideration that is contingent on the achievement of performance milestones and the continued employment of the principals of Slashdot.org will be recognized upon the achievement of these milestones. To the extent any stock consideration is issued, we will record a non-cash compensation charge based on the fair value of the shares issued at such time.
Its no secret that a lot of WC companies are moving more operations to the East Coast. Sun just built a massive facility in Burlington MA. It will eventually hold 2,500. Oracle just announced that its build a new campus in MA for 1,000 people and it will still have a NH campus for about 500 people.
...was to have picked up the phone and call Mr. J. My experience has taught me that talking to a real live human being tends to diffuse issues. When someone hears a voice, they connect on a different level - they know their words can hurt a real person.

Let's not forget the Monkey Girls as well!!

Just wondering - Keith
An awful expensive troll - they've filed their S1 with the SEC
This is more sad than funny.

When was the last time these two had a face-to-face / heart-to-heart talk about what they're doing and where they're going?
Someone should get these two guys together over a beer/soda/coffee and let them figure out where they can agree to disagree.
