Things have gotten much MUCH better in the last three years, for example XFree86 -configure. I was able to get Quake 3 running with a minimum of fuss. Likewise it only took a few minutes to get a USB cam up and running. Crossover plugin installed easier than most windows applications. With a decent package management system (I like Gentoo's portage) and a good internet connection, it is *far* easier to maintain a Linux desktop, and must more rewarding. He's bailing out at just the wrong time!
Emulators use virtual machines, operating systems use virtual machines (Microsoft's.NET), and programming languages use virtual machines (Perl, Java)".
Microsoft's.NET is an example of a virtual machine used by a particular operating system - there are no claims that.NET is an operating system by itself. Similarly, the Perl and Java programing languages have been implemented on virtual machines - the JVM, and the stack-based (soon to be register-based) Perl virtual machine.
So don't act like there is some unwritten code of conduct on the internet where you don't post TV/movie spoilers and everyone agrees to this
Of course there is an unwritten code - its called
*** SPOILER WARNING ***** + a screenful of new lines
Actually, it is a written code as well - many newsgroup FAQs will insist people do this. And yes, while there is a demand for cruical plot details of upcoming movies and shows, usually people have to actively look for it, and they have ample warning. But *most* people reading the front page of Slashdot are not looking for spoilers, so posting one is at best very inconsiderate and stupid and at worst mean-spirited. I think a more heartfelt apology than "I'm evil, sorry about the spoiler" is in order.
According to the article, being rejected lowers your scores on a test that requires analysis. So would dropping a bowling ball on my foot, or any one of many distracting situations. It makes no claims about repeated, continuous rejection which I highly doubt makes you "dumb"

In other words, is larry wall and the python guy collaborating efforts to bring us a new language derived from both? or is this some hackers bringing an actual product out of the joke.
Those were some fun games, not much violence, except when you got to go hunting on OT, that sure was fun
Yeah that was fun, especially when you killed 4 buffalo and 15 deer, and it said "You shot 8,000 pounds of meat but were only able to carry 150 back to the wagon"
Not completely accurate. If the guy had been using the name 'in trade' prior to the use by the trademark holder then the trademark holder cannot prevent the prior use
Is this guy going to look some judge squarely in the eye and say that he never heard of the word "BattleBot" used in trade, even though he registered battlebots.org at the end of the exact same month Comedy Central began running adds for "BattleBots" every five minutes? If this isn't cybersquatting I don't know what is
Let me see if I got this right... The guy is willing to part with his domain for less than $6000 and BattleBot.com is fighting him? How much does it cost to hire an evil corporate lawyer? Certainly more than that.
It's not the money, its the precedent it sets for the next guy who wants $60,000

Does anyone have any specific case examples of MAPS abuse?
See the www.media3.com case - they get RBL'ed for simply hosting sites that advertised spamming tools. http://slashdot.org/yro/00/12/13/1853237.shtm
This is the real thing, see http://dev.perl.org/perl6/
