The Lone Gunmen Are Dead

Mike Perry (And many, many others) writes: "In an astounding move after the cancellation of the show, Chris Carter killed off the Lone Gunmen in tonight's episode of the X-Files. After a short introduction that re-introduced the group as trying to save "a world that isn't too kind to idealists," the episode progressed until the Gunmen realized their destiny with Langley's quotes about Joey Ramone, and then Byer's quote "We never gave up, and we never will. In the end, if that's all they can say about us, it'll do." The episode then built to an ending where the Gunmen group gave their lives to thwart a bio-terrorist financed by a business tycoon.I don't know about you guys, but back in the prime of the X-Files, these guys were as close a role model as I could find on television as a kid. I was deeply disappointed with the cancellation of the show (sure the pilot sucked, but the next few episodes were good). I feel glad that these characters were allowed to retire with dignity before the end of the show." CD: Oops, sorry about the spoiler, when I scheduled the post I miscalculated the timing. I know, I'm evil. I promise I won't ruin the next 4 episodes or however many they have left.

But it is just TV, after all

Cute--apologize and then do a 180 degree with an excuse. Either apologize or try to save face with a lame excuse but do not try to do both. The fact is that content has certain values. For a large number of people the content of the X-Files has a great deal of value despite it's method of distribution being merely "TV." On the other hand, some content increases noise to signal. The maintainers of Slashcode are aware of this fact and put in an responce rating system which helps deal with "first post" and "me too" postings. Another issue is content which has a damaging value such as flamebait posts. This story including the *title* of the story would fall in the catigory of having damaging value. And since the title is part of the problem and gets replicated to several other pages through-out the web, you have probably also negatively effected the content of hundreds of pages through-out the internet. But Slashcode does not provide a rating system to reduce exposer of damaging Slashdot titles. And your responce to the issue is:

Excuse your actions as not being intentional

Excuse your actions based on the show's past content not having value to you (rating it as annoying)

Two word attempt at accepting responsablity with "my bad"--is that even a complette sentence?

      Provide a "big" apology

      Provide a "big overall" apology

Excuse your actions as only effecting "TV, after all"

Can you honestly not see how much of a meaningless "big" apology you provided?! If you want to try to save face with a bunch of pointless excuses then do not title it "I'm really very sorry" because it is clear your not. If you where sorry then you would *DO* something about it.

I watched the pilot, and looked forward to watching their show, but there must have been a scheduling conflict since I missed the rest. When I saw the beginning of the X-files tonight, I freaked. Once it became obvious they weren't, I stopped watching, so I didn't know about the ending. Here's another spoiler for you, the main characters run into Duchovny in the end, and they all get killed. I loved Byars. We had a group at college that got together and watched the Files on a semi-regular basis (our peak was the summer of '99 - everybody would come back from work, we were living in a dorm, and we'd all go down to the tv room and pop in an x-files tape, and watch classic episodes), and each of us was labeled with the person that he most resembled. (actually, we did have one girl who was kind of in the group, and she had red hair, so she became Scully.) I was Byars. I could really identify with him - had pretty much the same personality. Mulder was flamboyant, Langley was a hippie freak, Frohike was a dirty old man, but Byars was just a nice, calm guy.

Stinks that they're dead. At least, I presume, they went out in something of a blaze of glory and died for a good cause. It's not like they'll be making more X-Files without them For that matter, it's a good thing they won't be making any more X-Files. The final five episodes will begin to provide highly anticipated answers to many of the shows most-asked questions, culminating in the two-hour finale in which Agent Mulder is reunited with Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) after having gone missing for the past year. Also, the final episodes of the series will examine many of the pieces involved in the long-running mythology that has continued throughout the shows nine seasons. The series finale is being written by series creator and executive producer Chris Carter and directed by co executive producer Kim Manners. In addition to appearing in the two-hour series finale, Duchovny is also confirmed to direct THE X-FILES episode scheduled to air Sunday, April 28 (9:00- 10:00 PM ET/PT), which is based on a story idea he co-wrote with Carter and executive producer Frank Spotnitz. Last season, Agent Scully and her new associate in the X-files office, Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick), investigated the mysterious alien abduction of Agent Mulder and successfully saved him from a fate that would have placed him under alien control. This season, Scully and Doggett have been joined by Agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) in their investigations, including a shocking government cover-up with possible ties to the FBI and Scully and Mulder's newborn son.
