  1. Re:Education only!? on Apple Releases New PowerBook and the eMac · · Score: 1

I ordered my Dual G4/450 from the Apple Store for Education a few years ago and saved a good $150. At that time, Apple also let one downgrade the RAM and hard disk for even more savings.

AFAIK, they did not verify that I was a student in any way. I never had to send them a copy of my ID and didn't receive any phone calls.

On another note, I work at my school's newspaper. We were going to buy a couple of the new iMacs as we are switching to OS X (with InDesign 2 and Photoshop 7) over the summer.

However, the eMac, with largely the same specs and a superior monitor (for our purposes--page layout) fits our requirements nicely. That it is $200 cheaper is another bonus.

Worked pretty smoothly in Netscape 6.2 on my G3/450 with 384MB

However, when I loaded the Bible, it chewed up just about all of the available memory. The machine started choking a little and swapping to the hard disk, something I haven't heard it do in a *long* time.

    See this.

It only takes a few seconds for Drive Setup to initialize the 8GB "MP3 Jukebox" drive I have in my G3 at the office...

It is exceedingly simple to get around this "security." I've downloaded a number of files that disallow printing and content extraction.

Just use good ol' Cmd-Shift-3 and take a screenshot. If the image is high-res, just zoom in and take a bunch of screenshots and piece 'em together in Photoshop.

    AFAIK, they can't prevent screenshots.

  5. How will this work on Macs? on Universal to Copyprotect All CDs · · Score: 1

Seriously. Macs and PC's use the same drives.

My G4 has a Sony CD-RW drive. This drive (CRX-160) is the same one you can buy at CompUSA, even though the box has no mention of Macintosh support.

It works great with iTunes, Disc Burner and Toast 5, and yes, it's bootable.

Hmmm. Everytime I read something like this it makes me glad I have a Mac (still running OS 9 for the most part).

  7. Is this good for Mac OS X users? on New FreeBSD Book Aimed At Newest Users · · Score: 1

I'm a long-time Mac user who has just purchased OS X (based on FreeBSD). I'm trying to figure out the command-line interface, but the online tutorials I've found have been hard to follow.

I was brought up on DOS (started with 3), so I am familiar with a CLI, but the *nix commands just seem so arcane.

Is this a good book? Are any of you aware of a good net-based trainer for FreeBSD?

    Thanks.
