  1. Scavenge! on Making Stuff Out Of Broken Computer Equipment? · · Score: 1

Just last week I decided my PC needed additional cooling, so I removed the cooling fan off a busted ATX power supply I had sitting in the closet nearly a year and soldered on a connector. The fan only required 12V and the right connector.. works great as an extra system fan. If more people scavenged like this our landfills would be better off.

  2. Unplug your phone on TeleZapper - A Way to Avoid Telemarketers? · · Score: 1

I sleep an odd schedule (early evening), get up a few hours to work and then sleep again for a few hours. Too many times telemarketers call when I am trying to sleep during early evening, so you know what I do? I physically unplug the phone and turn the answering machine volume down. People can call and leave messages while I am asleep and I am not disturbed. I check the caller ID and usually verify some dumbass tried to call and sell me some crap I don't need. They're LUCKY I unplugged the phone or they'd be afraid for waking me up. :)

I would like to, but we have been asked not to in central Kentucky.. the blood center is packed with people (from what I have been told)

  5. Got a CD with intentional tons of tracks on Restricted CDs Quietly Distributed · · Score: 1

A year or so ago in my music class at college, the textbook we were using included a CD set of full songs. Well the entire CD was divided into like 80 tracks while there was only about 11 songs on it. The effect of ripping one of Bach or Handel's or whoever's songs off the discs was pointless because in order to get a complete song, you'd needed to rip tracks 1, 2 and 3 and then assemble them on your computer as one large wav. Highly annoying! I wouldn't be surprised if this is the next step in copy protection.. multi-segment songs that can play fine as a single song off the CD, but when ripped are represented as many tracks, effectively butchering a song's integrity.

  6. Re:Digital Copies on Restricted CDs Quietly Distributed · · Score: 1

Yes an optical digital-out connection from a DVD Player to the computer sound card would work fine. I've done this many times. Granted you can only record at 1X speed with this method, but it works. I have a Turtle Beach Montego II Plus and it works flawlessly. This is also a good method to capture streaming audio off the web in perfect clarity as the original. Media Player or Real player won't let you save to disk directly? No problem. :)
