I'll paste the info from the TIL article.
What is iMac Firmware Update?
iMac Firmware Update is based on customer feedback, and increases the reliability of iMac booting. It is being provided to every iMac customer as preventive maintenance. The iMac Firmware update upgrades the Open Firmware boot ROM code using a simple application downloadable from Apple's web site.
2. Dual-image boot ROM The iMac Firmware update installs a second boot ROM image within the flashable ROM. Should there ever be a future firmware update, the second image serves as a backup should the firmware update fail. Although a firmware update failure is highly unlikely, providing the second image would allow the iMac to start up.
Flashable ROM - Does that sound like hardware to you? Hmmm I think it does.
There's a little button on all macs that when you press it allows you to access the open firmware boot ROM - it's pretty cool - you should try it sometime.
Anywho the open firmware boot ROM must be present for Mac OS to boot - you aren't allowed to copy them & sell them.
That's why there aren't any clones - otherwise you could install Mac OS on ANY motorola based hardware & it would run. But you can't.
Why? Boot ROM!
Anyway her'e the apple TIL article before I forget
True - However since the article suggests you use an apple motherboard w/ a Mac OS boot rom the EULA is not violated.
The boot rom was originally manufactured by Apple and is required to run the Macintosh operating system - Classic or X.
If you were to manufacture your OWN motorola based motherboards & copied Mac boot roms - then you would get into legal entanglements much more serious than an EULA
Apple pays for an MPEG 2 liscence for iDVD. iDVD is on the restore disk. If apple allowed this hack to be distributed they would have to pay a liscencing fee for every restore disk w/ iDVD rather than just the Macs that come with a superdrive.
I think this is the first legitmate use of the DMCA in history. Apple should be applauded for the proper use of such laws - not berated for suspected misuse.
Why clone the wooly mammoth? Because we can. Why clone a sheep (Dolly)? Because we can. Why split an atom? Because we can. Why go to the moon? Because we can.
Why have more than 640K of RAM? Because we can.
Anytime something is acheivable through our technology we strive to obtain it. It just something that we - as humans - do.

Move to a country with a better economy if you want a cheaper iMac - or at least spend a smaller percentage of your yearly income.
Or you could help improve the economy of Brazil. How - just like we Americans did. We ignored patents on technology in other countries & stole the ideas of inventions of the world for over 200 years. It's only w/ in the last 50 that we've produced anything of any value (IP wise).
So you want a cheap iMac. Start a computer manufacturing company & reverse engineer the iMac (yes so it works w/ mac OS X including the boot ROM). Then lobby your government to put a $3000 BRL tarrif on all imported computers. After that's done start selling your computer (complete w/ a full version of Mac OS X) to not only Brazillions but Argentinians, Chileans, Mexicans, Germans, & Americans.
What's Apple going to do? Sue? Not if your government ignores the lawyers Apple sends (Much like it is w/ the AIDS pharmeceuticals - I think that's Brazil anyway). So just remember to have a strong lobbyist group that has in thier pockets the most important government officials.
Brazil should do this with all thier industries. Become self reliant! Fuck foreign investment! Steal & rape & pillage the IP of everyone for Brazils own advantage. Then you will have a little slice of America to call your own! [except w/ better beaches & prettier women;)]

The $avings were only $400 per year of roughly 5,000 machines per each type. These are probably labor savings & not much else. Software is standardized across all platforms (Office, Photoshop, IE etc). And decent hardware is also cross platform (Network printers, the ocassional didital camera / scanner for art students).
The report also states that there were fewer hardware costs (repairs). And fewer technical support costs(Memroy leaks - buggy M$ software). As well as fewer training costs (Crufty M$ gui).
Does this mean that thier aren't exceptions? No.
Can you build a $400 PC and install slackware and only run OSS software on it? Yes.
