  1. Related to Target's Beacon announcement? on Turning Off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in iOS 11's Control Center Doesn't Actually Turn Off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (vice.com) · · Score: 1

Corporations, like Target, can't track users if they have bluetooth disabled. Keeping bluetooth "always on" will make it easier for them to passively track iOS11 shoppers as they travel through their stores (whether they use the app or not).

  2. Mozilla's MAFF addon is not e10s compatible on Firefox 54 Arrives With Multi-Process Support For All Users (venturebeat.com) · · Score: 1

v54 was still slow for me and I've been using the Developer version that had it enabled. I finally identified that e10s easn't enabled due to Mozilla's "Mozilla Archive Format" addon.
    http://maf.mozdev.org/

As far as I know, this is the only browser-based plugin that supports the MAFF archive format. It hasn't been updated whereas other developers were required to update their addons. I'm not sure if this means that MAFF is dead or if its just an oversight. (I've tried reaching out via email & Twitter over the past couple of months, but there's been no response.)

Out of frustration regarding browser performance & non-communication, I finally switched to Chrome.

  3. iPod app connects to iTunes.com during playback on Apple Logging Locations of All iPhone Users · · Score: 1

This hasn't been covered yet and I doubt that this information is being logged directly on the device.

I noticed that after upgrading iPhone4 to iOS 4.3.1, that the iPod app would attempt to connect to multiple iTunes servers while I was listening to a MP3 that I purchased on Amazon.com. (This background connection didn't occur when was using iOS 4.1.) I'm not sure why a connection needs to be made to the iTunes server to play a song locally on the device that wasn't purchased from their proprietary store. I'm not sure what data is being sent as I've been too busy to research it. I searched Google and haven't found any information regarding this. I used "Firewall IP" (a jailbreak app) to block the unauthorized reporting of this playback information. (Apple may have authorized this connection, but I don't.)

  4. Battlestar Galactica Series available for purchase on Battlestar Galactica Available for Download · · Score: 2, Informative

The series has already played out in Australia and UK back in 2003... the DVDs will be released on March 1st and 28th. Just go to http://www.amazon.co.uk/ and search for "battlestar" in the DVD section.

If you go to the US Amazon store, it probably won't be released until the SciFI series has ended.

  5. MediaMVP on Gateway Wireless Connected DVD Player Reviewed · · Score: 2, Interesting

I picked up Hauppage's MediaMVP and it allows me to play my media (DIVX, MPEG, JPG, MP3, etc) over ethernet to their small client that connects directly to my TV via SVideo cable. I prefer watching videos on my TV with surround sound... and the couch is much more comfortable than my home office chair. It also has the ability to stream online radio stations. It can support up to 12 remote clients. (This would be great in an educational setting as you wouldn't have to allow the original media to go from room to room and be checked out only to get stolen or damaged.)

I picked it up at Circuit City for about $100. There's an open source project to emulate the BeyondTV interface (like Tivo). The only downside is that the server software needs to run one a Microsoft platform.

  6. Blocks text links (and unexpected MIME files) too on Norton Antivirus 2004 Ad Blocking - Tough Call? · · Score: 1

I had a client that was using it and she was claiming that an entire section of her website was gone. Norton Internet Security 2003 was actually removing text links from her navigational menu. We changed the directory name and then there wasn't any problem... When it comes to banner blocking (with IE), I use AdShield 3 from http://AdShield.org It allows me to modify the block & exclude lists. Norton has no such control.

Another note on Norton: If you dynamically create support files (JS, CSS, RAM, ASX, etc) using ASP, PHP, JSP, ColdFusion... make sure that you change the mime type when delivering or Norton will detect that the file type doesn't actually match the expected mime type and simply block the file. No mention of this is in the documentation or on their website for developers. We had to file a complaint with Symantec in order to find out.

  7. No upgrade is required... looks just fine. on MSN Blocks Mozilla, Other Browsers [updated] · · Score: 1

I used IE's "Save As" feature and saved a copy of the MSN homepage to my hard drive and then viewed it with different browsers to see what Microsoft's problem is:

    Opera: looked fine.
Navigator 4.08: Strange... no background colors.
Netscape 6.1: fine, some incorrect spacing
Microsoft MSNWebTV: Looks fine. Fonts are large.

It didn't get any javascript errors in any of the browsers... So what's the issue with allowing access to non-IE browsers?

I guess this is how their development department deals with complaints concerning their website not meeting web standards. I wonder what their vision of the openess of .Net looks like. Perhaps we'll all have to be running IEXP in order to access the internet in the near future.

  8. If you can't beat 'em... buy 'em out. on VeriSign Accuses Competitors Of 'Slamming' · · Score: 1

We "were" transferring all of our domains from NetSol to Registrars.com. We had our own personal rep that we could actually talk to on the phone whenever we called. We could even update the Registrant without having to pay Network Solution's $200 "processing fee". We also are able to handle all billing so that a client's website doesn't suddenly disappear when NetSol puts it in "unpaid status". (Previously NetSol would just shut off access without getting any confirmation from the client. Once the name is offline, it is untransferrable and NetSol will NOT transfer it and it is held hostage until the account is brought up to status.)

We've been avoiding NetSol and thought we found the best solution until... Verisign bought Registrars.com.

Verisign now owns Network Solutions, Thawte & Registrars.com.

Anyone who gives them a run for the money gets bought out. I'm tired of this! What else do they own? (I don't want to give them any more money.)
