The UnitedLinux FAQ says the source code for it will be relased for non-commercial use. Is UnitedLinux going to develop non-free code (ie. the installer) or the FAQ is referring to other software that will be part of UnitedLinux? That is, will the base distribution be freely redistributable?
Well, both KDE and GNOME have a set of recommendations redarging UI's.
But, you can't ever say "this app is usable, that one isn't". The fact is, these guidelines are there to help you create a good UI, they're not strict rules you must follow.
I also think it would be very, very difficult to get developers to accept "SimpleFace", specially companies.
Its not open for debate. Microsoft has been judged and convicted as a monopoly. Thats illegal in America, thats NOT the American dream.
There are two ways of doing business: the legal and the illegal way. Microsoft has chosen the second so I dont like this company.
btw, dont deny that youre a slashdotter. Look at the number of posts you have in this site. From the tourist example you mentioned, I can look up in the dictionary to check that youre right. But whats your definition of a/.er, anyway?
First of all, what's with the "You/.'ers"? What about you? Did you just hit this page by accident?
Anyway, the reason many people dislike Microsoft is not because they make crappy products, it's because of their illegal tactics. They're a monopoly. That's what Microsoft's whole business is built on. And that is so NOT the American dream.
Sony on the other hand has not just lost a legal battle, so talking about them is no the issue here. I just wonder why your pro-Microsoft arguments aren't valid for Sony.
The people who choose the GPL for their software do so because they don't care about making money but they don't want anyone else to make money.
This is completely untrue. The GPL says you can redistribute the software, and you can also charge for it.
There's an endless number of companies making money by selling free software.
Since he doesn't care about commercial concepts like support and ease-of-use,.
Support and ease-of-use are not commercial concepts. Free software is easy to use, and there are _a lot_ of people and companies providing support for free software.
Actually, Mandrake 7.2 had KDE 2.0 (release candidate).
Distributions are going to use KDE 3 only when they switch to GCC 3 too. Otherwise they have to break binary compatibility twice (KDE 2 -> KDE 3 + GCC 2.95 -> KDE 3 + GCC 3).
A megacorp has mega interests. Fighting the GNU GPL would simply kill Red Hat Inc, and they can't possibly justify that to their stock holders.
Don't expect AOL to write free programs, but if they were to patch the current RH packages, they would make the SRPMS available just like they're today.
Of course, AOL needs to buy Red Hat before this happens.
That's pure FUD. Why would you suggest Pine when you there's Mozilla Mail and Evolution? Two secure mail clients
And BitchX is an IRC client. AOL has a version of AIM for Linux, not to mention the many free easy-to-use IM clients out there.
Wake up, this is 2002, not 1995.
Youre a fool to think like that. Microsofts monopoly only hurts the American economy, as it stops competition, which is the base in which the US Economy was founded.
In the short term Microsoft brings money to the US, but it stops a lot of bussiness in the process, which would earn a lot more.

You do know that subscriptions are not the only source of income to Slashdot, right?
For example, there's a banner on the page I'm viewing right now.

There's a protocol that both GNOME and KDE follow, if an application doesn't support drag and drop it's broken.
See http://www.freedesktop.org.

Not so fast, there.

You wouldn't be using the C library, but a C++ library that binds it.
1. Nautilus wasn't working on FreeBSD but was on Sun Solaris. Weird, huh?
2. Could you please point out some "Linuxisms"? I'm curious.
Conectiva Linux is rpm-based, apt-enabled and the KDE packages are split into individual packages.
What the heck are you talking about?
Your comment doesn't reflect the opinions of the Free Software Foundation. A software is either free software or not.
If this was true, FSF would be recommending you a *BSD, not the GNU system.

1) If they break Wine they'd be breaking other Windows apps;
2) This has been done already, see Kernel Cousin Wine for details. It would make a good case against Microsoft though..

Just a small correction: there's no such thing as GNU Linux. Linux would be called that way if it were a GNU project.
Instead, use GNU/Linux, GNU/Hurd or GNU/BSD.
Mozilla is not fully licensed under the GPL yet.
But anyway, Mozilla was not created by AOL. It's the same situation as I previously described.
This is not exclusive to China, it happens everywhere. (yes, in the US too).

Kerneltrap uses PHP-Nuke, which can use PostgreSQL and also other databases.

And not for your TV either...
The drivers for your video card would be useful, and the poster even gave you an example.
Are you talking about the LSB specifications or the LSB test suite?
It's redundant because the question is answered by the linked article.
The Ogg project is about freedom, while the Napster file format was created to control its users.
Don't fool yourself... you'd be paying the record company, not the artists. The artists will not get a dime from this.
