    The answer is no for any recent build of FreeType 2, since it comes with a "auto-hinting" module that was specifically designed to completely ignore the TrueType bytecodes.

    Myth 2: Apple is suing (or sued) FreeType

    This complete myth apparently started with this article on the SlashDot news site. Too bad the editors didn't care to check the submitted link nor even tried to contact us, we could have helped them !!

    Actually no.

    The key sentences in that article are:

    Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg [...] offered no explanation for the preliminary ruling.
    and
    Apple [...] said such protections apply only to "legitimate members of the press.''
    What you attribute to the court is actually what Apple said in the court filings. The judge has not said anything on how he came to that decision.

    Getting scooped on your product launch is part of being a free society. Any NDA's one has with one's employees is NOT the journalist's problem.

    As much as murder is. "Gee, why don't you kill somone, so I have something to report." Face it, a reporter is not allowed to incite breaking a law.

    IANAL, but contracts that are illegal are not binding. A NDA can't keep you from reporting a crime. But the Uniform Trade Secrets Act keeps you from telling trade secrets to the press.

    Yeah, yeah. But then why where there three attacks against MacOS X and 8 against Linux (also survived all attacks)? Wouldn't your argument result in attack-proportions lower than marketshare, not higher? Or is your point that XP SP 2 simply hasn't been cracked yet because so few people use it compared to the easily exploitable XP SP 1?

    So where did those 3 attacks come from? Were there three automated attacks - which "don't make economic sense"? Or were these from idiots who somehow knew they attacked Macs but simply didn't know how to do it properly?

    Face it, somebody did try to hack some anonymous Mac on the net, and despite "easily exploited remote root exploits" failed.

    With an online database, if that site gets hacked your number is now likely circulating amongst various hacker groups and could easily be used to rack up a lot of charges.

    Not that you have to order online to get your card number into an (not really meant to be) online database.

    Heck, go here and download Microsoft's .NET common runtime for free. In case you aren't a programmer, this package contains implementaions of DES, TripleDES, Rijndael (AES), Public Key Encryption, Cryptographic Hashes like MD5 and SHA-1 (now 1000 times weaker!!), Digital Signatures, etc.

    And likely the aforementioned keylogger plus backdoor from the NSA.
