  1. Create an e-book Napster!! on Why Nobody Likes E-Books · · Score: 2, Insightful
Worried about being "Napsterized" -- with their books freely distributed in digital form around the globe -- publishers enveloped their e-books with digital locks to prevent transferring, copying and printing.
Hmm, ya know I think the companies are missing something big... A Napster for e-books would actually help increase their revenues a lot. People would download a few books... but not many people want to sit around on their computer for hours reading a book... so they would buy the e-book reader (driving profits to the manufacturers). Then, since they have the reader, they would buy some e-books legally... for the same reason that Napster helped increase cd sales...

The E-book companies would end up selling a lot more if they removed the security because more people would use e-books and even if a certain percentage of e-books were illegally obtained, there would still be a great increase in the number sold legally.

Well if you're a 16-year-old and are trying to get a tech job that an adult would normally fill, of course you're having trouble... Companies have more than enough applicants now especially since tech ppl are getting laid off at certain companies. And there's no applicant shortage, as has been explained in lots of recent articles. http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/07/29/023924 1&mode=nested

I don't know what you're looking to do, but it's probably something that they could get a college intern to do and there are plenty of those willing to take jobs.
I suggest you inquire at small local companies. Maybe develop a flyer advertising your services and distribute it throughout the community. Small mom+pop type of places are much more likely to hire you than a large company. Also, you're 16... many companies don't hire that young.

Under the DMCA it is. We've already had this discussion in the Dmitry articles... similar to the knife on desk thing. The problem is, lawmakers are getting into a trend of punishing possession of something capable of doing something illegal (eg. guns, DeCSS, Dmitry's eBook software...), rather than the actual crime itself.

No, you got that wrong... don't sue the people who copy the files, sue the company that made the copy mechanism!
Therefore Microsoft produces software that can be used to illegally reproduce and distribute copyrighted material and therefore is in violation of the DMCA. Quick, someone send this to the judges on the MS case... we may still have a chance for that XP injunction! ;)

I agree very much with that paragraph... except for the part about coding - most people that age don't do much coding... heh, most of them don't even know what an html tag is. You have to remember that those of us who did start at that age are in the extreme minority.
I would estimate that greater than 95% of young teens/15-year-olds are spending their time on AOL chatting, emailing, and doing a limited amount of web surfing. Actually, my view may be skewed by the fact that the only people are know that age are girls... probably for guys there is a higher percentage that include games in their computer usage. While this is all fine and helps people socialize (my opinion), you don't learn much that will help you replace adult jobs.
And besides, if the job actually involves significant work then 99% of teenagers will not want to do it - who wants to be researching law cases when they could be out at the beach with their friends?

Senator Torricelli probably thinks that this is a way to stop hackers before they even develop their skills. But this is stupid, kids don't become malicious hackers at school and so what if they bring down the network? It happens all the time at most schools because no one competent is admin'ing it.
And in my H.S., most of us used to bypass the computer's security system all the time in order to play games. It was something silly like pressing Cntl-C to get into DOS. Plus, there was even a loophole that allowed me to read other people's files and write to their directories (though I didn't take advantage of any of it, honest :) ).
Ok, so yes, if a kid intentionally does something harmful, then he/she should be punished. But not with time in federal prison! Leave the discipline decisions to the individual schools.

"That's an exaggeration," he said. "I have three jets and two smaller planes. One of the jets is quite expensive, the second is moderately expensive and the third, a Czechoslovakian fighter jet, is not very expensive." --

Ohhhh, Mr. Hosier, rumors can be soo inaccurate! They definitely should have realized that 3 jets and 2 planes is not the same as 5 jets! I mean, if you count the planes as a half jet each, then it only adds up to 4 jets. What an atrocious mistake! ;)
