    I've never seen a problem with being able to punish those who advocate genocide or hatred of a group. I've read the legislation in question and it's designed to ensure that abuse doesn't happen. It's not a matter taken lightly.

    Frankly, this being slashdot, I am often suprised that a group who has likely seen more hatred directed at them than most(nerds, for those who weren't paying attention) doesn't have stronger feelings supporting such legislation.

    Interesting plan. I'm sure it would go over really well in all those places where Canadian water and electricity is transported to American communities, not to mention gasoline. You DID know that Canada is the largest exporter of oil to the US, right?

    What? Did you think that the trade surplus was made up of beanie babies?

    I'm sure it would be really popular by the American companies which control a large portion of Canadian manufacturing.

    What? Did you think that there was no symbiosis between Canadian and American businesses?

Rather than whining that the big bad Americans are forgetting how great Canada is(and bringing up that ancient act of terror whose only purpose seems to be to inflame Americans), why not sit back and be glad you're living in the greatest nation in the world?

    Remember: It doesn't matter what the rest of the world thinks of us. Enjoy being what you are, rather than getting mad because others aren't.

    That's because management types run the world, and they figure what everyone really wants is to manage people. A guy I know just loves his work in instrumentation. He's been doing it for decades, and if he had a choice, he'd do it until he retires, but to his bosses, wanting to do instrumentation and be really good at it is a flaw in his personallity. Either they'll eventually promote him to management, or they'll find a reason to get rid of him.

    So.....What does the quality in Linux, OS/2 and BeOS come from?

    Just asking, since Apple doesn't have a monopoly on quality by any means (though Linux is of a different sort of quality -- sort of industrial. I like that.)

    On the subject of security, am I the only one who is noticing that windows 98 is in reality an order of magnitude more secure than the NT series, especially 2k and preSP2 XP? Strangely enough, unless you have a share open, it doesn't seem that you can get many(if any) viruses just by being connected to the network like you can running 2k or XP. Sure, you can secure a 2k or XP machine with a firewall, but it seems that without doing just that, you can't patch or tweak enough to make the machine safe...

    3)get a console! Hey all you folks on slashdot! Don't bother with a reasonably powerful computer, you just don't need it! Get a reasonably priced console instead!

    (Have you spotted the joke yet? I'll give you a hint: If you're reading slashdot at home on your 1ghz machine with an nforce motherboard, you're already just a hundred bucks away from having better hardware than an X-Box. ;) )

    Depends. Processor speeds have been stagnant for a long while now, and hardware prices are quite low. With the exception of a high end video card, there's no reason to believe that a business couldn't put together a reasonable system for $380, especially buying the parts from a commercial supplier.

    Um.... OS/2 WAS a microsoft OS.

    And it IS an IBM OS which I have installed on this very computer, right next to BeOS and a tiny little debian installation.

    (All this space, why not use a bit for nostolgia? ;) )

    If you're running antivirus and it finds something, you've failed to secure your system. I prefer scanning every 6 months for viruses, and if there is a virus, I look over my security and try to determine what could have caused the breach.

    It's worked pretty well for me so far, and it means I don't need to buy antivirus software, so I'm happy. :)

    though the claims made before the war still seem to be overstated(we were supposed to find stockpiles of thousands of tons of all sorts of chemical and biological agents, according to rumsfeld), I'm glad it turned out the war was justified. The thought of all those people, military and civilian, dying over this war apparantly in vain sickened me, and knowing that the world is actually a little safer gives me that much more respect for Bush et. al.

    Sure, if you're the sort who gives the president credit for the armed forces work. Except that like I said, they weren't really much of a threat if the capital was conquered in 2 weeks, was it? If I run out saying I'm about to kill some big threat to us all, then proceed to swat a mosquito, it doesn't really matter that it was just a mosquito, it still wasn't really a threat. Consider the barely armed militia which seems to be doing one hell of a job compared to the lackluster Iraqi army.

    If you were actually as knowledgable about the current events as you claim to be, you would realize how retarded that sounds.

    Actually, it looks like they have figured out that beheading Americans doesn't do them any good, because (unlike Spain and the Philippines) we don't roll over and play dead when the terrorists make a threat.

    As of the day I wrote that it sure as hell didn't, since it said right there in black and white that a group was going to. Like I said. Current events.

    My bad. My sources never mentioned anything of the sort, and since they are fairly right wing, I had assumed they would have, and rubbed it in everyones face. ;)

    This is the reason I stopped arguing about Iraq in the first place -- nobody has all the information, it seems. Least of all myself! Sort of incredible to think that you can read page after page of news reports and miss something fairly important like that.

    Well I'll be damned. Blame the press, because god knows I never got wind of any of this. Strange, since I read what is considered to be pretty damn right wing news.

    Please accept my humble appology. Though we may still not agree on particulars, it would seem that my accusations were based on a source of information that is not to be trusted. Even as of a few days ago, the newspapers I've been reading are still acting as if there was faulty intel and nothing has been found.

When you start equipping people with military hardware, they're lawbreakers, and any government directives not to have weapons are moot, because suddenly the people have weapons they're not really allowed to have under current laws anyway.

    If you don't want to bother keeping up with the news, don't act all high and mighty when others who do decide to speak.

    In the news today:

    Former director of the CIA says reports on Iraq were "an honest mistake", some republican party members want his head on a pike.

    Bipartesian committee says there were 10 instances where Al Queda could have been foiled in the months leading up to 9/11. Also says that there is no plausable connection between 9/11 and Iraq, though most of the hijackers did move through Iran. Bush makes vague threats about Iran.

    The problem with the fallacy is that most people aren't psychotic murderers whose goal is to kill a random person. Sure, there are muggers, sure there are people who will break into your house, but many murders are done by family and freinds(at least here), and in that case, removing access to legal firearms will mean the difference between "get me my shank" and "get me my gun". Both are bad, but if you want to live, the shank is the better deal, eh?
