XP runs just fine...for a while. For whatever reason, Windows 2000 tends to have a longer lasting period when it's under use, and again, for whatever reason(I just call it as I see it, I don't know why things are the way they are), tends to have fewer brutal security holes (remember the link that wipes out c:\? It didn't exist in 2k, for whatever reason). Even more, I've done some clean upgrades to xp from 2k on a few older machines, and it's simply impossible, no many how many services you shut down, hacks you take advantage of, or UI tweaks you slam into the installation, to get the same level of speed. I've had 400mhz laptops with non-trivial amounts of RAM(192MB, 256MB) being embarassingly beaten in speed by Pentium classic 133s with 64 megabytes of ram in Word 2k and IE6.

For whatever reason. Unlike most people, I'm not going to play the smart guy and pretend I understand why it is, but that's the way it is.

I think you're mistaken; the vocal "anti M$" trolls have ALWAYS looked pretty stupid. These are the same people who think that Linus Torvalds should devise some grand strategy to "crush micro$oft". They flock to Linux(and no other OS) because they want to be anything but microsoft, oblivious to the people who are using it because it's the right tool for the job(which sometimes it is, obviously). Unlike the people using nearly any other non-microsoft OS, they seem to focus their attention directly at an operating system they aren't even using, of all things(either Linux or Windows, it depends on whether said anti-m$ zealot is an idiot or a hypocrite), instead of just using what they want to use. Perhaps that's why so many would swear to god that Linux is user freindly in all ways; instead of actually looking for something that's easy to use(the correct way to find something user freindly, by the way), they just look for something that isn't MS, and apply whatever qualities they want to it's description, without regard to reality.

Actually, it kind of reminds me of an article on adequecy.org -- how to write satire for geeks.

Anyway, while these people were busy trying to play some sort of strange alpha male act with the largest software company in the world, Microsoft got the picture and started making OSes people could actually use. Go figure. Capitalism is funny that way.

In the end, all slashdotites think they aren't a part of the mob, that their "unique" point of view allows them to keep themselves from being manipulated. In the end, the only people who wholeheartedly support microsoft are the trolls and the newbies. Everyone else thinks they have an opposing opinion, perhaps even you, but it's just part of the mob. Turn against it, and it turns against you. Just remember that filesharing is still illegal, no matter how inconvenient it is for you.

It's like I said before. People here have their own "code of the uber-nerd", easily described as a combination of mob rule, convenience, and religious-style "righteousness"(ie. hypocracy).
