oops, my mistake. The OS was updated pst 1994 though, I downloaded the brand spanking new version of DR-Dos in 1997, and it was good(came with novel netware, not a bad deal, the price(zip) was right):)
the name changed back to DR-DOS for 7.2. I was using it around that time, and it's at that point where I couldn't find it on calderas site anymore.
I have a suggestion for the internet.

Would everyone quit it? Just because some news article says that dos is dead doesn't mean jack. Will your boot disks suddenly become dead? Will all the code suddenly stop working? The answer is a resounding NO. Hell, even under XP, the command prompt still exists. Sure, it's a castrated bastardized version of dos, but it's still there. Under linux, Bochs and dosemu run dos apps just fine (dosemu hates certain apps though...)
Even better, most of dos is utterly expandable. Drivers are relatively easy to write for it, programs written under dos can use any hardware which can be used by another OS (albiet usually through some hacked drivers, a la win9x:) ).
Just don't proclaim this OS dead because some new (and crappy) OS comes out.
Disclaimer: I have a dedicated DOS machine at home.
I don't see why it isn't the case manufacturers responsibility. Dedicated hardware and a small sensor set up next to the processor (or even as a small bimetallic strip between the processor and heatsync to measure temp. would be capable of reading a bad tempeture in a fraction of a second (basically, the moment the strip heats up), and could cut power to the entire PC. With some clever design on the part of the motherboard manufacturers(just placing a sensor on the bottom of the CPU in the ZIF slots middle), high temps. could be detected even faster.
...I have to agree with every post which says "heatsyncs don't fall off!", since any decent motherboard and any decent heatsync should be designed to not fall off in the first place(cheap plastic or cheap tin is the only real reason they should break).
On the same note, did anybody ever hear about the research into heatsyncs which AMD was doing which let a K6-2 run without a fan? That could be useful if applied here.:)

I don't read gaming magazines anymore. Most writers for these publications are self important idiots who think they know more than they do, and think that because they play games, they are fit to design them and even talk about hardware.
The truth is, many are a kissing losers who will often give a piece of software the review they want to give it, then complain about the same piece of software later. This is especially true with windows reviews. How many Windows ME reviews were overwhelmingly positive? How many references to Windows ME are actually positive today? (hint:None)
Even with hardware, reviewers will try to present hardware in the best possible light because they want to believe that the hardware is good (how many good reviews are out for Savage4 based chips? How many reviewers later say that they wouldn't recommend it?)
Personally, I'll just buy reputable parts (athlon 4 or XP(original works well too), geforce 2 or 3, good stuff like that)

The one thing about BeOS that most linux users don't understand is *why* people use it(how many "switch to Linux/BSD/whateverOS" posts have there been?).
One of the reasons I loved BeOS so much was the thing that I don't see much of in software anymore. OPTIMIZATION! Their software was actually optimized to run well (and quickly). Even on the p75 with NO CACHE I tried it one, it was impressive(descent 1X ran really smoothly).
The day they stopped optimizing software, I lost most interest in cool PC apps. What was the point? It's very nice that they can use a kludge solution to make the program work(poorly), but I've always been a sucker for software which actually pushes the limits of what hardware can do and look good doing it.
I just broke out my old OS/2 Warp 3.0 disk a couple weeks ago. Installed it. It's good. I'm trying to install win95 in a VDM. Their VDM (which runs linux as well) is far faster than anything else out there (almost full speed for a 166!), and that's good.
I also own BeOS. Another good OS, but I must admit that using Bochs for compatibility is a bad solution (too slow!!!). Natively though, BeOS is a fantastic OS which will always have a place on my hard drive. Did anybody see that animation application which came with it?
Ironically, I'm trying to get ahold of an amiga so I can try it out. I don't think I'll ever find a person with one who is willing to give it up though...
one thing though, I'm not a freak by any means, I'm just a person who will use the tool for the job. OS/2 is great for cross-platform compatibility(no reboot to change OS!:)), BeOS is great for internet access(though people have argued this with me for hours at a time), and is a great platform for the people who just want to check their E-mail and surf the web (especially since it makes just about anything else seem slow in comparison). I have linux on another drive too(RH7.1), and it's a fine multipurpose OS (like windows), which is growing in uses, and I'd have no problem with traching my mother how to use it for web browsing and word processing.
