I'm incredibly lucky when it comes to hard drives; I've only had three drives ever fail on me. The first was a 500 megabyte drive which got dropped, the second was a 160 meg seagate drive which was bashed around so much it failed (poor thing), and the third was a Quantum fireball 1 gig which died on my recently (the BIOS just stopped recognising it...odd.)
I even still have a 40 meg drive I use to store Windows 95(legit copy, I keep it there because a hard drive is easier to install than a CD-ROM drive)
It's the worst possible standard for a drive interface.
If that's how you feel, I pity you. While I'm doing that, I'll see how many RLL or MFM drives you have in your PC right now, and if you have none, I'm gonna smack you.
The truth is that IDE was a godsend for anybody who wanted a hard drive in their PC. The fact that their interface came standard in any bios, the fact that you didn't have to worry about whether your new drive would work on your old controller (or your old drive on your new controller) were revolutionary, as was the incredible speed you could achieve without worrying about interleaving your drice. The price was right as well. IDE had what it took to become a dominant standard, and anybody who thinks differently is just spewing SCSI loving garbage(note:I have nothing against SCSI, but it has never had the price advantage, the compatibility advantage or the ease of installation which made IDE so popular.)
Basically, until you have tried to troubleshoot an MFM or RLL drive, you can keep your mouth shut and quit bitching. There were plenty of standards which are far worse than IDE.
This may give you rambo legs, but it sure as hell ain't gonna give you a sixpack unless it's just hiding under a few inches of flab. What we need here is that device which shocks your abs into contracting -- sure it'll cripple you by the time you're ready to show off those abs, but just think -- A SIXPACK!
is it just me, or do the photos in the microsoft meeting website show everybody there as being hideously ugly?
That, and what is here really can't be trusted. Shareholders are coddled, and this whole meeting was just for internal PR purposes. Bill could say basically anything, and probably has -- he's not really the most trustworthy guy on the planet!:)
just ramblings from a man who had to drink a cup of really bad decaff this morning in lieu of real coffee...:/
I'm aware that some contries (britain) have some really bad phone rates, but even then, if ALL YOU ARE DOING IS E-MAIL, it's still cheap. an hour a day for E-mail is plenty, and that's only 15 bucks a month.
I pay for internet access by the hour too, at a dollar per hour. My arguement that for E-mail it doesn't matter stands. An hour a day is plenty for E-mail, and that price still hits a lower range than cable.
The truth is, most people don't need that much bandwidth(which is irrelevant in many cases because of limits put on broadband in many areas), people don't care if their computer is connected 24/7, and a lot of people just use their computers for sending E-mail and chatting. Broadband is nice, but why would people stick with something expensive and elabourate when a cheap and easy solution exists? Broadband is great for people who use computers for games, or downloads, or even for developers, but when all you are doing is checking your E-mail and chatting, 56k is more than enough -- especially for half the cost.
Try a pair of high quality studio headphones. Expensive, but they'll last for decades (unlike the walkman style headphones or the ear buds), and they sound INCREDIBLE.
no, they said "The first desktop OS which supports enormously large filenames" basically, though I may have a few words off, the meaning remains intact.
In the first paragraph, they state that Linux recently became the first desktop OS to support enormously large file sizes
and then went on to mention BeOS, which also has support for abnormally large files. Just because Linux has a theoretical limit higher than BeOS(about 5 times theirs), does not mean that suddenly linux is "Linux recently became the first desktop OS to support enormously large file sizes".
Or is BeOS (the most user freindly and consistent OS I've ever used, BTW, I can't wait for the BeOS Clone projects to get a working OS) not a "Desktop OS"? If it isn't then Linux REALLY isn't!
Those were problems with the amount of space which can be physically stored in a space -- not a problem with the size of a file. This achievement has only passing significance, as there is currently no way to include that much storage in one device!
After long consideration, I've decided that the only remedy which would have lasting impact would be the following:
1)Send tanks and bombers to redmond to "convince" Microsoft to behave.
2)If Microsoft continues to misbehave, destroy a smaller building, thereby making everybody on the microsoft campus wet themselves.
3)If Microsoft continues to misbehave after wetting themselves, send in some black ops troops to retrieve any data which may be useable (such as the full source for any MS products?) then take the compound out.
:)
then watch the rest of the industry wet themselves and play nice.
In that situation, I'd assume that any other fans in the case would continue to pass air over the heat sync, meaning that the processor would slowly heat up. At some point, the processor would hit critical and lock up, prompting you to shut off the computer while yelling "f*cking piece of AMD sh*t!", all the while not knowing that that crash just saved your CPU:)
besides, regular maintenence of fans is fairly easy (blow the computer out with compressed air, then you can use motor oil to lube the fan, which will last forever afterwards -- if the fan is really dirty and dusty, run it under a tap(!!), then let it dry before putting the oil in (you *MUST* use oil after this technique or the fan will sieze)), so we're talking a kind of "if I don't change the oil in my car, and it overheats, It's the cars responsibility to shut down automatically!" arguement.
as for my maintainence advice above, there are always impatient goons who will just rinse the fan in water, then stick it back onto their heatsync without giving it time to dry or lubrication and turn on their (now wet) computers and bitch about how my advice broke their computers, so *don't do any of the above unless you know WTF you are doing*!
The government can't stop them, so I'm going to do the only thing I can to help stop microsoft. I will never develop any program for Windows XP, and support for win9x will stop after I finish my current project. Besides the fact that Microsoft will just clone anything for windows which is useful (or are MSN Messager(or was that ICQ?), Media player 8(Or was that WinAMP?),MS compressed folder support(Or was that WinZip?), theme support(or was that Window Blinds?), Internet Explorer(or was that Netscape?), MS Office(or was that wordperfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and Harvard graphics?) , inventive and innovative?), and I'm not going to help them anymore. Starting with my next project (technically the one I'm working on is for DOS anyway), I'm going to investigate alternative operating systems to develop under. Maybe my next game will be for BeOS, or X11, or SkyOS, or AthiOS? I know it will *NOT* be for windows XP.
I urge other developers on this site (I know there are windows developers on here, you aren't *all* using linux!) to do the same. Don't support or develop for a platform which will reward developers who make popular programs with betrayal, and don't sit by while your hard work is assimilated by microsoft.
Bad Sectors can also be manufacturing defects. I have used many drives with bad sectors which just sit there, and the drive works perfectly.

I still find it funny that every couple years I buy new hard drives always for around $200... 120 megs, 800 megs, 2.5G, 12G, 30G, 100G. I love this.
:)
:))
You should see what kind of drives they are just *giving* away these days...
2 gigs? I'll never fill that up!
(seriously, you'd be suprised how many people consider their old 2 gig drives to be in the same league as their old 30 meggers a few years ago!
Maybe if your journalists could get THEIR goddamn facts straight, we wouldn't have so much misinformation floating about?
Both the tick and batmanuel seem pretty shallow to me...that's part of what makes them funny :)
He's got a bucket on his head, and you can't recognise him.
:)
Sewer urchin:"Yeah, definitely got a bucket on my head."
That's just funny stuff
in whose mind? Everything I do is just as doable at 56k as it is at 300k.

you've reiterated what I said perfectly.
As for the IE stuff, ten bucks will get a magazine from any 7-11 with the latest version of IE on it.
"anybody" who only checks their E-mail and chats.
yeah, it's a nice quote, but it's grossly innacurate, and it's exactly NOT what I said.

From what I've heard of XP, Microsoft is trying a new technique: The peer pressure technique.
:))
Installing XP: Do you want to sign up for a passport account?
booting up for the first time: Cmon, sign up for a passport account.
starting up internet explorer: Sign up for a passport account. I'll be your freind!
entering hotmail: Oh yeah? well I'm not going to let you go here unless you sign up for passport!
this is a dramatization. I haven't used XP, and I don't want to(I have enough waiting in my life, thank you very much
I agree.
Now if only I hadn't been modded as 'troll'.
I wish I could use karma to push my own scores up sometimes. Especially when I'm modded wrong.
