The USPTO does not routinely accept "almost anything" at first. I hate reading stupid slashdot comments on patents. Slashdotters generally know nothing about how the patent system works. Stop spreading FUD.
Try and make a comparison to first action issue patents to patents with a more substantial prosecution history. You will find that patents will generally not get issued by the USPTO without some fight by an Applicant or his Attorney.
Usually, bad patents issue on Fridays and Mondays when Patent Examiners are pressed to make their numbers look good.
The only thing for certain is that people reading and posting to slashdot generally lack the slightest clue on the inner workings of the US Patent System. I believe that Slashdot needs to have some sort of informational session teaching readers how the system works. Until then, posts regarding failure of the US Patent system should be halted. The sort of comments and speculation found on the topic here at Slashdot on serve to misinform others. I come to you as a US Patent Examiner. Please consider this suggestion. Maybe an ask Slashdot or Slashdot interview might be a step in the right direction.
I got laid off minus 2 weeks of back pay, no vacation pay, and a letter circulated by the Head of legal counsel to be not commit any illegal acts. Next thing I know I find out that they had subtracted our 401k for the last two months, but failed to place that money (that I earned) into my 401k account. It also caused our 401k plan to be temporarily frozen because the company failed to pay the maintenance fees. This head legal counsel used to be the FCC chairman. I think that she would know the legality of her actions. I don't believe that taking our 401k was legal, then accuse/threaten us with legal action if we recouped some of our lost wages. F'n hypocrisy.
Are you refering to the test performed by the professional musical types? I think it was posted on ZDNET. I don't think it went into great detail about the process of the tests.
The big barrier to market for me will be the hardware support. I wish APEX would include that in their firmware.
