This is true if you believe that it is the government's role to to make a reasonable effort to treat every disease that people might get. Some people strive for a more limited government that doesn't do much beyond law enforcement, national defense, and mabey a little infrastructure.
I'll start by disclosing that I have a mac and love it so the original question is N/A. Why doesnt apple aquire a PC manufacturer and apply their elegant design to a line of PC's to increase their market share in the overall market? The could pick a different type of "apple" e.g. fuji, golden delicious to associate with the PC. I think a lot people crave apple's design but refue to run OS X for various reasons. Later if they ever wanted to abandon the Power PC platform for OS X, the hardware portion would be in place.
We spend less than $200 per client. These are Neoware Capios. We also Use a similarly price unit made by wyse which is faster but doesnt have com ports.
Each server Compaq dl360 (dual 1GHz 2GB RAM) holds 25-50 users. 25 for office type folks running full desktop and 50 for shop floor machinists who arent as interactive. pros: 1 server image that can be dupliacted. Can easily lock down users really tight Thin clients are quiet and last a long time. Thin clients are small and quick to change out when service is needed. Although you will need a way to secure them from users think it is a full PC. cons: not really cheaper than desktops. need good network infastructure. Not suited for graphically intense applications.
Lately i have seen a couple of absolutley tiny cars driving around my neighborhood they appear to be street legal and about the size and layout ofa golf cart but much fancier. Anyone know what theses are? The appear to be new models and I seem to remember them advertised in magazines.
but I find the idea of buying overpriced hardware ridiculous (for the same price I can buy technically superior and esthetically equivalent components).
I used to feel the same about paying for the hardware, but I really wanted wanted to try OS X so I bought an old iMac. I have no regrets, it was money well spent. I would bet the majority of other people who have taken the plunge are happy with their puchase as well. There are intangible benefits such as refinement that make the hardware worth the $. If you try a mac I bet you wont go back.
I recently bought a HP g85 fax machine that has an "answer immediately" button. (mabey all fax machines do) I answered the phone as a fax machine for every out of area caller for about two weeks and have gone from ~8 calls nightly to mabey 1 every other day. The down side to this is that the telemarketers will next get a machine that will send a fax when I do this or sell the # to a faxmarketer
I like that idea but would the data still be recoverable with some utility? Mabey it would make sense to rm -rf/home or whereever your data is, calculate the amount of free disk space and do a mkfile of that size!
Yeah I understand it is opensouce utils ported to NT, I meant to say you still dont get a great unix experience with Cygwin. You cant see/kill/manipulate NT processes for example (Correct me if Im wrong). With osx the command line is incredibly powerful/integrated
Really my only problem with NT (aside from that I dont like MS in general) is the weak command line.
mabey an idiot,
At work I use strictly linux all day on a cheaper, higher MHZ machine and have been for the last four years. Linux is great, but being able to run it (similar) side by side with OS X is worth the extra money for the machine (to me)
I am one of the linux -> OS X converts. I dont use MS 1) because I dont trust them, 2) Weak CLI -Cygwin, while nice, still feels like too much of an afertought. OS X really is the best of of both worlds I ran run all the Linux type Apps I want with rootless X Windows, and still have access to all this geat Mac Software both old and new. Links 2002, Tax / finance, etc. And the wife wife can and does use it. The one drawback I see is that the hardware costs twice as much, but for me that hasnt been a show stopper. I dont have a problem giving $ to apple.

These vendors are just going to have to start writing their own malware that only their software can detect and fix.
As an Employee of Kenncott / Rio Tinto I have to say this is music to my ears! All Your copper mines are belong to us

Thats my retirement grease!
Can anyone explain why sun doesnt have to provide free downloads or cheap cd's of the free / open portions of this software?
In 10 years Windows will probably look more like OS X does today :)
