  1. Re:Lifespan of servers? on Red Hat Announces Product EOL Calendar · · Score: 1

some vendors for extra money will extend warranties up to five or so years (my employer has started buying Dell boxes with five year warranties pretty much as standard).

To be fair, nothing in the article said that you couldn't get extended support on Advanced Server. I just said that the standard support cycle would be 3 years. I'm sure that there will be the ability to extend that support for a similar extra charge. Also, Advanced Server is still rather young and they may tweak the support time frame based upon sales and customer feedback. Red Hat is a business and I'm sure they will keep themselves flexible to support their customer's needs.

  2. Agreed... on Is it Wrong to Accept an Employment Counter-Offer? · · Score: 5, Insightful

In the ideal world, where professionalism is practiced, this isn't personal, it's just business . That being the case, you make your decision based on what's best for you financially and professionally and take the offer you want. Professional people understand that, as they would do the same in your position, and deal with it accordingly.

Unfortunately, we don't live in the ideal world, there is no such thing a professionalism in modern business and people WILL take it personal. Because of that, you HAVE to treat the situation as a personal relationship and not a business relationship. Yes this is sad but, unfortunately, a fact of life. What you have done is equivalent to going to your significant other and stated, I've been seeing someone else and I would like to end our relationship. At that point, there is no turning back. Oh, the other will beg you to stay, say that things will change and ask you to try to work it out and be one of those rare couples that use this as a way to make your relationship stronger. However, while you think it's all behind you, there will be hidden resentment, hurt feelings, feelings of insecurity and sometime down the line YOUR the one who is left as they have gone out and started looking for YOUR replacement.

As I said, while this may be a very sad and a very cynical commentary, it's simply human nature and a fact of life. Take the new job and remind yourself of the reasons you left in the first place. I'm sure that if you looked deep enough you'd discover that money wasn't the ONLY reason you wanted to leave. Even if the new job doesn't work out, you'll be better off in the long run.

This is also in line with what I have heard from from friends who work with HP as well. I find it interesting to take this and bring it in line with what happened with Enron. Most financial analysts advise you to diversify your holdings and not put your eggs in one basket. In the case of Enron, because employees were so heavily invested in Enron stock, their financial futures were tied to the success or failure of the company. On the flip side, the HP employees who may have exercised their options and subsequentially sold those options to better protect their long term financial future, put themselves at the mercy of institutional investors who, have a larger stake in the company but do not have their livelyhood directly tied to the success or failure of the company.

Now, I'm not arguing that people "shouldn't" diversify their porfolio's. However, it is an interesting "catch 22" that employees face.

Of course, the "intelligent employee" will not put himself in this situaiton. As one of my managers explained it to me when I got my first job:

"Your career isn't your job, your career is your skills. Never sacrifice the latter for the former."

The best piece of advice anyone has ever given me. (Well, OK, maybe it's second to my mom telling me to stop playing in traffic. ;) )

My experiences were similar to those mentioned above. I am fortunate that I am a developer by trade, knew how to configure a CISCO DSL modem by hand and chose a great local ISP who walked me through setting up my modem to bridging ATM mode from PPP mode.

The main point of disappointment I had was that the process for switching to MSN was EXTREMELY easy. From telemarketers who called on two different occasions to remind me that the switch was coming to multiple promotional mailings. Ultimately, if I did nothing about it, I would be switched automatically. This level of service was NOT given for alternative ISPs. For example, I had to make SEVERAL phone calls to Qwest customer support, got re-directed to wrong extensions multiple times just to get a list of alternative local ISPs that would support Qwest DSL.

As I mentioned above, I am a developer by trade, so when a local ISP tells me I'm going to have to reconfigure my DSL modem, I say, "OK, no problem". However, a majority of people out there are not "technical" and would probably hang up the phone right then go with MSN because it was so much easier. To me, that is a HUGE problem.

I don't mind Qwest making a deal with Microsoft to give them access to their Qwest customers. What I
do mind is making alternative choices so difficult that only the people who are dead set NOT to become MSN subscribers will jump through all the hoops required. Everyone else will "live with MSN" as they don't either have the time or support to choose anything else.

This is a great win for the Linux community. This does bring up an interesting point. What kind of internationalization packages are available for Linux? The main reason for asking is, with an ever growing intall base in Asia, there will be more and more applications developed and contributions made to open source software with a need to be ported from English to say Korean or Chinese and vise versa. How easy is this to do?
