" It's "progress" to hand over control of your life to a bunch of holier-than-thou statists who are CERTAIN that they - AND ONLY THEY - know what's best for you. Fucking morons."
How your representative votes IS your right to know. However, when the government knows how you vote then abuse creeps in. Just look around the world. It's not uncommon to be rewarded for voting a certain way or terribly punished for voting another way, and that is effected when authorities can know how you voted.
I think you might be the one advocating corruption here.
It's a depressing fact that oppressed people rise up against their oppressors, only to show that what they really wanted was just what the former rulers wanted: to oppress others.
Go to 6:10 for his depressingly wrong prediction. Aside from that, it's also a great interview. I can't imagine todays interviewers asking questions even close to this interesting. There's not even one "how did it feel" question in there.
"...and when I notice someone that seems like they're going to blow through a stop sign, I ease up."
Good idea. The problem with that in a place like Los Angeles, for instance, is that for some reason it has become standard practice for people to race up to a stop sign and roll through it as though they were going to run it, only to actually stop if they absolutely have to. It's nerve wracking, and if you ease up for every one of those jerks you're never going to get anywhere because they will then pull out in front of you and inexplicably go 5 mph below the speed limit.
I welcome the day when humans no longer pilot cars. I don't think people realize how deadly driving can be and how you can ruin someone else's life in a heartbeat.
I don't know. I've read a good deal of what she wrote and was rabidly into her for quite some time. Then I came to realize that basically she was rather one dimensional and her model of the world is not very realistic. Yes, of course humans essentially perform better when motivated by self-interest, but human beings are so much more than little drones of capitalism. We're very complex and our motivations vary from day to day. For someone who actually looks at the complexity of the world Rand starts to look a little simple.
I doubt it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews_and_the_slave_trade. But nice try at blaming the Jews once again for everything bad that ever happened. I guess when you're proud of a slave-trading past you have to reframe the whole discussion so as not to appear inhuman.
That is definitely worth a mod point or two.
" and tell them where the best bar to go is to *not* get hit on. "
For most of us this is already simply every bar.

True. It's better to let a corporation do that.
That.

There were a lot of people in France that did more than that. They stood up for other people. I was called the French underground.

I'm nominating my neighbor to be on that ship.
I think you might be one letter short yourself. It's Spock.
Bingo. Best post in here.
Maybe. Then again Neil thought we'd have bases on the moon in his lifetime.

"Learn your archiology."
The Archies were another band entirely.
Wow, 5 ms is overly generous. Reaction times are more on the order of 250ms at minimum, probably more like 750ms. Factor that into the math snark.
Marxism incorporates atheism. It is not an "atheist philosophy." Atheism just means not having a belief in gods.
It's nice to know someone is paying attention.
You mean like http://lovelypackage.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/beer1.jpg ?
Don't worry. This will have no effect on most Slashdotters.
You could use this:

Fascinating. This is the first time I've ever heard that. However, lots of people like to redefine words to suit them.
The phrase "atheist philosophy" sounds a bit nonsensical to me since atheism simply means a disbelief in a god or gods, and is not a set of views.

Well, yes, and we all know what to think about religious texts in general as well.

I guess it's a niche in the same way that the Grand Canyon is a niche.
How about blast-ended scroots?
