  1. But isn't this also copyright infringement? on Interesting Way To Protest Napster · · Score: 1

Oh, so we help rid the world of copyright infringement by (according to the instructions):

" 3. Edit the songs adding noise, sounds, and other info.
    5. Connect to Napster and start laying eggs. "

By modifying and redistributing the songs, you will most certainly be infringing on the copyrights of the artist(s) according to copyright law. There won't be a question of legality about making songs available for download - if they have been copied, modified and redistributed, that's illegal. Unless of course the song in question is GPL. ;)

    What an asshole.

    FINGERBANG RULES!

  2. Letter that I sent to Mr. Enforcer on Do-It-Yourself Sue Napster Software · · Score: 1

Since you seem so concerned about the rights of artists / engineers /
producers / whatever, have you obtained permission from the Backstreet
Boys to use their name to promoted your product? If not, aren't you
violating their rights by using their name?

Napster and other similar services are not evil as you believe. I've
bought more CDs since I've been using Napster than I ever have. Why?
Napster enables users to find the music that they are looking for. For
example: Stupid radio DJs almost never give you the name of the artist
and song that you are listening to. With Napster, I can enter what little
information that I have and figure out who I'm looking for, what album the
song is on, and if anything else on the ablum is worth listening to
because I'll be damned if I'm wasting $18 on a CD if there is only one
track on it that I like. If I don't know, I won't buy AT ALL! Then, the
artist, record company, and all those engineers, producers and etc. LOSE.

Since the introduction of Napster (as well as the whole MP3 format),
artists and record companies have sold their albums in RECORD HIGH
quantities and have made RECORD windfall profits. To believe that MP3s or
Napster are harming artists in any way is ludicrous and NAIVE. If
anything, it helps the artists because it opens them up to the ENTIRE
WORLD - not just whatever record stores happen to carry their music.
Then, if the consumer likes it, the consumer will BUY it.

Artists such as Metallica have certainly hurt themselves by pursuing their
fans over Napster. I used to be a big fan of Metallica. I currently own
every big album that Metallica ever made. I was a fan since before they
made it big. I remember seeing them here in Nashville about 12 years ago
when they opened for Ozzy. They had a big tear in their backdrop and
people were BOOING and THROWING SHOES AT THEM. Even so, I thought they
rocked. Now - I think they SUCK. They SUCK for threatening their fans and
I refuse to listen to them any more because of it, even though I love
their music. They can have their CDs back - I don't want them anymore.

If you believe so strongly in protecting the rights of these artists, then
make yourself known. Who are you? As far as I know, you could be a
    record company or even Metallica.

  4. Boycott them on Dr. Dre Might Sue Napster Users? · · Score: 1

I think we all need to compile a list of artists, starting with Dr. Dre, that threaten shit like this and just QUIT BUYING THEIR ALBUMS. The internet is their friend, and they fail to realize it. If the consumer really wants the music, they will buy it because even though they are cool, MP3s sound like shit. I have bought many albums (after first sampling them using Napster or MP3 sites) because I want to own them in their original HIGHER QUALITY form. Now, I refuse to listen to this asshole's music again for considering such a ridiculous action!

  5. Why not? on VMware Signs Deal with Microsoft · · Score: 1

You can get VirtualPC for the Mac bundled with Windows, so why not VMWare? You can still get it without an OS :)

VMWare is cool. I'm a registered user of Ver 2 for Linux, and man - it flies (even running Windows 2000)! My Linux box is a P3/450 overclocked to 527, with narrow SCSI and 256MB RAM, running Mandrake 7. I ran a little benchmark util called "CLIBench" on VMWare/Win 2K, and it is actually FASTER than my wife's K6-2/500 Win 2K box at almost everything - pretty impressive methinks! The K6 does beat VMWare on disk writes, and CLIBench doesn't test video, which I'm sure is faster on the "real" machine. I kind of like the flexibility - Not to start a flame war, but at least Explorer 5 on Win 2K doesn't die like Netscrape for Linux. I even get pretty good frame rates playing Quicktime 4 movies. :)

  6. Digital StarTAC on Where Can I Find Cell Phone Recommendations? · · Score: 1

I've had a digital Motorola StarTAC with service through Sprint PCS for about 6 months, and I love it. I've had the service since they set up shop here in Nashville, TN a few years ago. The little li-ion battery is great in the StarTAC. Despite its tiny size, it will last a solid TWO DAYS, and limp into three before having to recharge it (talked on about 20-30 min a day.) You never have to power it off. It sounds / works much better than various Sony models that I tried before getting it. If Sprint PCS is in your area, check it out. Just my two cents! :)

Well, I'm here to let you know that I am a gun-toting, conservative Republican Linux fan! ;)

I've had two of these things on "special order" from Circuit City since the day that Slashdot posted this hack. So far, they are still vapor! I've got no axe to grind with Netpliance. They can't be making anything off of these things without selling the service with them. They had to do what they had to do. I'll just cancel my order. No big deal - it wasn't even prepaid.

Personally, I think that Netpliance should just offer a version with ethernet, without the modem - maybe with a small distro of Linux installed in flash to enable the hackers to do what they want. Heck, mark that version up to where they could make a profit without the service! I'm sure there are many hackers out there who would love to get one like that, whatever the cost! That would make everyone happy. You can get one for its intended purpose for $99 or as a tinker toy for say $300 ??? (They couldn't have that much in them - they are really just made of low dollar junk.) I've seen these things peddle for almost $300.00 on Ebay lately brand new and even more hacked.
    Check this out!

I will agree that NO ONE has a right to complain to, or (like I've seen on other discussion groups) *threaten* Netpliance over this. The party is over, now lets go home. But even if it costs more, an "open" version would kick ass!

    Nuke the whales.

  8. Why NOT? on Rumblings of MS Office for Linux at CeBIT · · Score: 1

I can see no reason why MS Office for Linux would be a BAD thing! It will bring more attention to Linux and broaden its user base! Why is that so terrible? I have lived to hate Microsoft, but I will admit that I use Win 2000, and it is actually pretty nice - the only problem with it is its COST. Linux could mop up the consumer / SOHO side of personal computing because Win 2K is priced out of the reach of the average Joe. The availability of "mainstream" apps can do nothing but BENEFIT everyone involved. By releasing Office for Linux, M$ would be admitting that Linux is here to stay! :) Flames to /dev/null

Less power? Maybe a little less, but I swear that I can hear the power supply fan in my G4/400 slow down whenever the CPU is bogged down doing something. Either the CPU is consuming a lot of power or the power supply just plain sucks. The G4 CPU will never outperform P3s and Athlons so long as it has to run that pathetic excuse for an operating system called MacOS 9. My P3/533 running Linux runs circles around my Mac. I also have an ancient Pentium Pro box running Win 2K. Given the choice between using it or the Mac, I'll pick the Win box. It is *FAR* more reliable, and wow - it can even MULTITASK! ooooh!

Actually, my H4 lights are MUCH easier on the eyes of oncoming drivers than standard lights because they only put out light from the lower half of the bulb. They shine only from the ground to straight ahead. I have yet to have someone flash their brights at me for blinding them, even running 90 watt low beams! When coming up behind someone, the light doesn't even reach higher than their trunklid or tail lights, depending on the car. I guess it is one of those things that you have to see for yourself - hehehe :)

Cars sold in the US suffer from crappy DOT-approved lighting. If only we could get Euro spec lighting approved in the US, then we would not have to resort to night vision to see what's ahead of us in the dark! I converted to european lighting on my 1985 VW GTI, and it is absolutely awesome! The kit that I used comes with 7 inch round H4 headlights (same as used on the european GTIs) and H3 fog lamps. I can run 90/130W H4 bulbs without blinding oncoming drivers - way cool! It takes a bit of rewiring, though :)

  16. E*Trade screwed me too! on "The Word" from E*Trade About the RH IPO · · Score: 1

They day that E*Trade accepted the first conditional orders, I had the good fortune to be approved for the IPO, and indicated that I wanted X number of shares. I entered a maximum share price of $18.00. This morning, I was sitting on E*Trade, wearing the reload button out, when I got the alert stating that I would have to place another conditional order. By the time that the message got to me, it was too late - I was SCREWED. Why the hell did I have to place another order for $14 when I had indicated in the first order that I would pay $18 !?!? To add insult to injury, I was suddenly unable to access any of my account information for about 30 minutes. When it finally came back up, RHAT was already trading. So not only did I miss out on the IPO price, but I missed out on the opportunity to buy any shares at all before they climbed to over $45.00. The way that E*Trade handled this was irresponsible, and there is no excuse for the alert taking so long to be delivered. Their system is SLOOOOW and highly unstable. E*Trade: Rest assured that I will be finding someone else to do business with!
