There will never be a "Year of Linux on the desktop" because the desktop is dying. Most of the sales are laptops, tablets and phones. Desktops only represent a really small percentage and it's declining every year.
If it can do that then it's a design flaw. Either Apple should have used better speakers that can handle the power, lower the maximum volume or use less powerful drivers.
As a user, I don't fucking care about the financial performance under Tim Cook. I don't want to buy a toy Mac with a castrated OS to browse fucking facebook, I want a real computer with a real OS.

The new Macs are more expensive than ever, no thanks to Tim Cook and the Canadian dollar exchange rate, the hardware is literally obsolete on the low-end Macs, the lack of usable ports on the new hardware is just plain insane.
In short, Apple has peaked and is in decline. I do not care how much cash they have in the bank as it does not help me, the end user.

You are assuming we are all Microsoft/Windows nerds, which is not the case. But the news could still be relevant if we could know if we need to tell friends or co-workers who might not be up-to-date on the topic being discussed.
Say what you want about Apple, but when you don't buy their latest gadgets, you're stuck with older software. I can't install the latest version of iOS on my iPhone 4. The latest version of macOS runs like crap on my mid-2010 Mac mini.

And also a way to install previous releases of the OS, to prevent something like iOS 11 and many more iOS versions before that.
Or maybe, just maybe, the manufacturers are trying to make their new phones out of milk for the new operating system.
