  2. WTF!?! on Physicists Work on Physics' Uncool Image · · Score: 1

Ok guys this really stinks of a practical joke, hidden camera style?

Anything that involves a 'youth-driven ceremony' is a waste of time by someone who has absolutely no idea whats going on. Just listen to this song Einstein (not enough time) (im sorry for the bandwidth you're about to get surry uni) if you think im wrong. its definately in the C rap MC category.

"We want to show that physics is not about the stereotype of the mad scientist. Physicists are normal people doing normal things."

But thats exactly what appeals to people! no-one wants to be doing a boring normal job, people wan't blade-switches.

The reason physics has declined in this country, and I know, i've just been through uni, its because when people leave school they are shit scared that they are going to do a worthless degree where all the jobs are taken. If you want people to take up physics you have to proove to them that there are jobs out there that pay well and are worth atleast £10,000 debts at 21.

  3. Re:Is FLAC worth it? on Audio Compression Primer · · Score: 1, Funny

Considering 4GB is enough to store about 6 hours of CD quality uncompressed audio, if you're an audiophile with a hard-drive based music player you would probably want to try it, except most mp3 players don't have much RAM so you will probably get allot of skipping if you move it around. Still, people are going to start storing uncompressed or losslessly compressed music on their computers more and more since capacity and price are pretty good now and most people can't be assed to compress all the music they've ripped - you have to decide on the bit rate and then what if you compress your whole CD collection and decide you want it at a higher quality, you might as well just keep it lossless.

I think the issue is that your right to bare arms is just incase the government turns bad and everyone needs to overthrow them - if guns can be disabled like this on mass with a single high altitude nuclear blast for example, it would pretty much negate any chance of an armed uprising..

This has been argued countless times on slashdot and by just about everyone else. In the end, physics and common sense says no you can't, some pilots however say they have been not only hit with lasers, but tracked for several seconds. It doesn't seem totally impossible that in certain rare circumstances someone could hit a pilot in the eyes, if the beam spreads out quite allot (nothings perfect) and is still powerful enough then its possible, just unlikely. Also helicopters would be a far easier target flying low and hovering. It really doesn't deserve more than a 5 minute news slot though, its just being used as the latest 'terror alert' - remember what you don't know, could kill you!

Still I think it would be a nice offer on pay-as-you-go (pre-pay?) because you would make your money from normal calls and so many more people would join your network, they could charge a small extra fee for each months unlimited messages but it would have to be very low. In Europe and most of the world everything is GSM and moving to 3G, its very useful to be able to just get on a plane and find your phone has automatically picked up a network when you get to the other airport but allot of companies charge way too much and even charge you to receive a call, that just takes the piss - in most countries you can just pick up a new sim card cheaply for a local network that won't be such a rip-off.. actually sometimes I think using a foriegn provider in the UK would be cheaper than using one of our money-grabbers..
