Maybe Windows is an alien attempt to redirect Terran Computer technology from useful things into endless squabbles over which program is more ethically pleasing. *sigh* If they did exist, why in the heck would they _want_ to visit here?
Gee... televison rots the brain! What a concept! They've been saying that since they invented the dang thing. Granted, American Society has become one of the lamest in history. My favorite line from _Speed_ still applies "In 200 years we've gone from 'I regret that I have but one life to give for my country' to 'F*ck you'". Still, TV and the 'Net have their bad sides. (yes, I have spent 40+ hours a week on the net). And my life picked back up once I made a point of getting out of the house. Jon? Just because they used a questionable and scientifically shaky method to get to this conclusion doesn't mean I'm going to let my 2 kids watch the cartoon network anytime soon.
I married a geekette. (Female Geek?) She loves computers, works in the wireless messaging business and the like. I'm working on my hardware certification at home. Our sex life is great. Just take heart, frustration makes it all better.
The phrase should be "Television is the opiate of the masses." I gave up on TV in the 80's. I keep track of news via CNN Headline News (when I have cable) or the net (the rest of the time). Seriously, who cares? S*itcoms are pandered to the lowest of mental classes. The overworked woman-in-distress movie gets the female part in. Guys (in theory) watch Sports. (Granted, I gave up Monday Night Football years ago.) At least we have the net, where we can interact in places.
How many people here recall a little book called _Hardwired_, by walter jon williams? How many people know that now only did the _Wired_ editors and owners not get permission to use the word, they sued Mr. Williams for using it years before they went online! They harrassed him for years before Ownership changes resulted in saner management. You can keep this mindless worship of being on the reckless cutting edge of a new frontier. All instutions have a dark side, and this one was no exception.
one thing windows has over linux in spades, and one reason it'll stay, #1, is because it's programmed to be easy to use by the average person. I've had red hat 6 for two months now, and I've given up trying to get dial up to work with it. I stick with Win98 cause it works time and time again, and I haven't got to go examine a dozen different config files to figure out what's wrong. Linux has the benefit of people working with it and on it that can put up with it being unrelaible.
The Austin paper had a good point, if the K7 doesnt perform well, we could all be living in a Win2k/Intel world. Linux isn't close to mainstream acceptance (I still don't have dialup working) and if this Althon thing can't make it, well...
If they are going to say how cool it is, doesn't that make it a heptalthon?
I don't like Salon already. Why is Slashdot loading slow this morning? How many people think that if Linux loses in this round, we will never hear the end of it from Microsloth? At least we can fix bugs faster than they can, even if their system is easier to get to do dialup.

We need an archive of funny y2k compliance forms. That was good.
and will it be cheap when you have to pay some snot nosed kid $800k to get the name you want? Cant wait for cybersquatting to be against the law.

Its nice to see even the editors of slashdot jumping to conclusions. *sigh*

Maybe you should consider two things.
A. Amazon hasn't had a profitable quarter. YET.
B. Why do you keep expecting the best when all you are going to get is the worst in online retailing?

Congratulations, Guys. They won't like most of the more rabid posters here, and most of the people here won't like them. Brilliant work.
I'll give ya another year or two before you're old news.

Maybe I can dig up one of the pawnshops here still running on IBM XT's...
How about buying up available bandwith and reselling it? Or just sitting on it to delay/screw around with a competitor?
Lawyers are taken seriously by corporate CEO's and the like, so we have to at least know their habits.
