I don't know how shit is done where you are, but AT&T has been given HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in tax breaks and they have delivered NOTHING. But, the government continues to protect them with exclusive easements and downright banning anyone from being able to compete in their hard line markets.
My point in all of this is to illustrate that, when not hindered by the government for stupid reasons, capitalism and small business can deliver. We don't NEED the government. We're doing it despite the government and we'd be way better off it they would remove the protectionist barriers.

Statistically, nobody in this country starves to death. At least not the way most people think of it. I did some reading on this a year or two ago, and my memory may be a little bit rusty, but the general idea was that somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 (give or take) people starved in the US the previous year. Most were abuse.. i.e. drug addled parents failing to feed their children and/or wasting what money they did have on narcotics. Only a few (a handful at most) were actual "starvation". I want to say something like.. a dozen.. Sad yes.. But not something you use to change the structure of a nation of 300 million people.
My own county has something like 50 food banks. Places you can simply walk into and get food. I know people who use them. They don't need to, but it's "free food", and they bitch about the selection. They aren't teetering on the edge of starvation. They are using the money they save for drugs (mostly) and some simply want to use the money saved for something else. I don't know what, but I'd be willing to bet a paycheck it's not a necessity.
Let me ask you this.. A though experiment... If tomorrow, electricity was declared to be a fundamental human right, and the government agreed to provide all electricity for free.. How much do you think would be wasted? I know what would happen... Everybody would own an air conditioner and that motherfucker would run 24/7 during the summer AND it'd be set to 70.

I think the purpose of this kind of argument is to add others, who didn't contribute, into the 'group' and therefore deserving of part of the output of the 'group'. The truth, however, is that the people who contribute are already compensated by nature of the trades they perform. Those who don't, are not.
Now it's true that government contributes to people's wealth by enforcing the law, building roads, etc., however the most wealthy tend to pay disproportionately into these systems and hence government workers are compensated for this contribution.

Although, I would argue that we've reached a point in our modern governments where those on top are being kept there, artificially, not by what they contribute but by laws. All those banks in 2008 should have failed. They should have been replaced by smaller banks, who would hopefully not make the same mistakes. Their rotting corpses should have been picked over and integrated into banks that were financially sound. But we no longer punish these types of mistakes.. we bail them out and they learn nothing. There is no penalty for choosing incorrectly. Should a business mistake be fatal? I think so, metaphorically of course. If you fuck up royally, your business should fail. It should cease to exist.

Your post is accurate. I just chose Nero out of personal experience. I wasn't picking on them. But, Nero bloated out way before there was a reason to. It was prior to the carbonate days. You're correct that IMGBurn gets the job done. That's what's so sad about Nero.. ImgBurn is a 2.96MB download. There was no reason for Nero to hit 50MB.. There was reason to be larger than IMGBurn, but not to ever get to the size it did, back when it was still primarily a burning program.
The point being, all of these commercial softwares suffer from feature creep/bloat. It's a result of trying to sell the same product to the same people multiple times. I doubt there is a solution other than SAAS. If you make people rent the software, you don't have to add new features.. You just turn it into a permanent revenue stream.
In defense of Photoshop, they have mostly kept to the core reason for the product. It has some bloat, but not a whole lot.
Office sucks.. I stopped using it at 2003.. Although I consider Office 97 the last "good" version.
New features aren't always good. They tend to encourage bloat-ware. I remember when Nero BurningROM was the best burner software out there (IMHO).
They kept adding more and more features and more and more bloat. A 10MB download (for the installer) turned into a 20MB, which then turned into a 50MB download, which (last I checked) had topped out around 117MB...

I wish, sometimes, that Windows apps had the UNIX philosophy of "Do 1 thing and do it well". But, you can't sell the exact same app to a person twice if nothing has changed, so I understand WHY it happens, but it eventually kills most payware..

I don't know how shit is done where you are, but AT&T has been given HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in tax breaks and they have delivered NOTHING. But, the government continues to protect them with exclusive easements and downright banning anyone from being able to compete in their hard line markets.
My point in all of this is to illustrate that, when not hindered by the government for stupid reasons, capitalism and small business can deliver. We don't NEED the government. We're doing it despite the government and we'd be way better off it they would remove the protectionist barriers.

Statistically, nobody in this country starves to death. At least not the way most people think of it. I did some reading on this a year or two ago, and my memory may be a little bit rusty, but the general idea was that somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 (give or take) people starved in the US the previous year. Most were abuse.. i.e. drug addled parents failing to feed their children and/or wasting what money they did have on narcotics. Only a few (a handful at most) were actual "starvation". I want to say something like.. a dozen.. Sad yes.. But not something you use to change the structure of a nation of 300 million people.
My own county has something like 50 food banks. Places you can simply walk into and get food. I know people who use them. They don't need to, but it's "free food", and they bitch about the selection. They aren't teetering on the edge of starvation. They are using the money they save for drugs (mostly) and some simply want to use the money saved for something else. I don't know what, but I'd be willing to bet a paycheck it's not a necessity.

I think the purpose of this kind of argument is to add others, who didn't contribute, into the 'group' and therefore deserving of part of the output of the 'group'. The truth, however, is that the people who contribute are already compensated by nature of the trades they perform. Those who don't, are not.
Now it's true that government contributes to people's wealth by enforcing the law, building roads, etc., however the most wealthy tend to pay disproportionately into these systems and hence government workers are compensated for this contribution.

All those banks in 2008 should have failed. They should have been replaced by smaller banks, who would hopefully not make the same mistakes. Their rotting corpses should have been picked over and integrated into banks that were financially sound. But we no longer punish these types of mistakes.. we bail them out and they learn nothing. Your post is accurate. I just chose Nero out of personal experience. I wasn't picking on them. But, Nero bloated out way before there was a reason to. It was prior to the carbonate days. You're correct that IMGBurn gets the job done. That's what's so sad about Nero.. ImgBurn is a 2.96MB download. There was no reason for Nero to hit 50MB.. There was reason to be larger than IMGBurn, but not to ever get to the size it did, back when it was still primarily a burning program.
The point being, all of these commercial softwares suffer from feature creep/bloat. It's a result of trying to sell the same product to the same people multiple times. I doubt there is a solution other than SAAS. If you make people rent the software, you don't have to add new features.. You just turn it into a permanent revenue stream.
In defense of Photoshop, they have mostly kept to the core reason for the product. It has some bloat, but not a whole lot.

New features aren't always good. They tend to encourage bloat-ware. I remember when Nero BurningROM was the best burner software out there (IMHO).

Now, after taking all of that risk, you want me to share the profits? I, alone, did all of the work in the beginning. There was nobody who helped for free. Had the company failed, I would have been the guy who lost all of his money.. Nobody else would have taken a hit.
I don't think I'm an unfair or greedy person. Quite the opposite. But after shouldering all that extremely hard physical and mental work, there is no fucking way I would share anything. I'll pay a good wage, but that's it.
Before you even claim this only would apply to large corporations, don't forget they employ less than 20% of the population (in the United States). Small business employs 80% of the workforce.
