A has nothing to do with B nor C. D&D3 has been in the works for 2 years. They have tried to produce the D&D movie for the last 10 years. And the Lord of the Rings movies has been in the works for a long time. Maybe the 'time has come' for all these things to happen at once. Though for the most part, it is pure happenstance.

Cell phones embedded in tennis shoes???
Bah! That's nothing new. Agent 86 had a shoe phone in the 60's.
Computers are just a tool. And if the tool isn't used well, it won't do any good. You need teachers who know how to use them. In the past it's been "Computers are the answer!" That's like saying flashcards are the answer, or "new math" is the answer. The bottom line is that you meet students at their need. When was the last time you heard an educational administrator say something like that?
I'm reading "Red Mars" right now and enjoying it. Yes, at points it drags on, but still worth it. The amount research that Kim Stanley Robinson put in seems to be very extensive. No wonder he won a Nebula award for it. I haven't seen a book with this much detail in years.
Ummm, why would O'Reilly merge with an IPO?!?! O'Reilly is a privately owned company. And Tim O'Reilly time and again has said he has no plans for an IPO. O'Reilly would have to buy all the stock. Seems pretty expensive to me.

I've heard that O'Reilly is coming out with a book on SETI. (It's the truth.) Perhaps it will be called "Aliens in a Nutshell".
You already can. Just go to any search engine, type the URL your want to go to in the search box, and it will bring up a link to that website. Simple as that!
And who needs wired magazine when you have a T1 connection and access to "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters"?

They don't have a reference, per se. But the do have a great book on C++, Practical C++ Programming.
The third edition is even better.

"Customers... able to influence big company's decisions"!?!?!?
This is what the Cluetrain Manifesto is all about. In fact, a review of the book just appeared here on Slashdot.
Maybe the RIAA will get a clue.
