Just because there's a new kernel is no reason to upgrade.

I'd agree for production boxen, but the whole idea of new kernels is to throw them over the fence and see what your users throw back.. it's a feedback loop, which helps the development process, as no single developer (not even MS, apparently) can test under as many different configurations as we can.

That's another nice thing about Linux: as long as there's a user community to support a peripheral's driver, that driver'll be available. That's a big problem for me when it comes to proprietary OSes like Solaris or AIX: they drop support for particular bits of hardware when they rev their OSes. Then they drop support for the OSes that support those bits of hardware.

Annoying as hell, particularly if you got stuck with a Sabine adapter (though the adapter itself kind of sucked ass... ;)

    * keep rebuilding the new kernel, while not rebooting unless the system crashes.

To handle that resolution a widescreen monitor is necessary. Also, nice feature of the Sun (rebadged Sony) 24" is it has an RGB in which can be connected to a DVD and a line doubler/quadrupler for up to 1080i video (and would do 1080p if such a standard existed)..

BTW: Perhaps linux drivers for the TNT2 will handle this? The TNT2 is supposed to come with 32MB RAM which should dblbuffer 1920x1200x24 IIRC.. (Though Solaris doesn't offer a 24bit root depth, it's 1, 8, or 32-bit)

Not necessarily. I've found, at least in my experience, that bullies tend to pick on those who _don't_ fight back, and will move on to the next person if you do. I still got into my share of scraps, and I still got my ass beat (often by a pack of 4 or more), but at least I put up a fight and I didn't stew over it.

And are you supposed to physically attack someone with martial arts if they spit you in the face? What if they call you a name?

If you take martial arts (I took a small amount of karate, and have since relied on simple dirty tactics) from a decent sensei, you learn that it's more about learning self control, self esteem and self knowledge than it is about injuring another person. The idea behind martial arts is the same as global thermonuclear war: the only winning move is not to play. But that only works if you have the faculties to play in the first place.

It's not about kicking someone's ass, it's about not rolling over and taking a beating without resistance. Even if you lose, even if you don't get respect for the attempt, at least you've proven that you're too much trouble than you're worth.
