Bah. Latter-day versions of AIX aren't bad, and there are some features which I like very much which are poorly-implemented/expensive/unavailable on other platforms..
I for one am sick and tired of hearing these articles on the internet culture. The internet is just a means for like-minded people to talk to one another
Is it me, or did you just contradict yourself? When referring to culture (or subculture), you're basically referring to a community, with a set of mores, roles, memes, etc shared among its members. It is possible to use the internet simply as an informational/communications tool, if that's the level of depth you desire. But you shouldn't belittle or underestimate something you choose to not participate or believe in.
MUDs, mailing lists, Usenet, Slashdot, these are examples of the communities which the internet enables, and can each be considered subcultures within the overriding culture which rests atop the Application layer.. And unless you're a total misanthrope, the value of the internet lies not in the hardware, software, wires and switches which make up its infrastructure, but rather the data that rides on it.
If it wasn't for this data (which can be musical, cultural, graphical, etc), and yes, the lusers that generate it, I would be out of a job, so please forgive me if I sound a mite defensive..;)
I mean, let's face it, a good fraction of IT professionals make 6 figures
Dunno bout that, it depends on your years of experience. In NYC, a fully-featured *ix admin of 3-5 years experience will fetch ~$70k. Don't forget, though, that NY, LA, SF, etc will have higher costs-of-living across the board (phones, insurance, utils, food, etc) which eat up a large amount of that.
so it just doesnt make sense to keep shopping at Kmart and trying to NOT fit in around the office
Heh. I can't even shop at K-Mart.. I wear (US sizes) a 58 long (that's XXXLT in t-shirt speak), size 20 collar, 47" waist, a 15 shoe, XXL gloves, and a hat of 8.5.. I typically order my shirts and shorts at landsend.com (they actually stock 100% cotton garments in 3XLT! Joy!), and buy dockers or jeans at a couple of local joints.
You don't know the fun of walking from one end of 8th street in the Village to the other, going into each shoeshop, and not being able to find a single pair of shoes. And I haven't worn a properly-fitting hat since age 14 (those 'one size fits all' baseball caps look like yarmulkes with sun visors)...
yaaay!! my favorite dish is in the jargon file!!

I've been ordering kung pao beef from one chinese restaurant for over 10 years. It's the best kung pao beef on earth: all they put in is beef, hot peppers, and peanuts. No celery, baby corn, or that other crap.
... for all the good it'll do. Still, I won't be buying 3Dfx or recommending it to friends, family, etc. Besides, IIRC I want 32MB/DVD/S-video on my card, and I won't be in the market for a vid upgrade for some time yet (next target is the C1x)
Er, price/performance? Then again, I suppose if you're looking for 4way SMP then you're in a different class.. The Ultra Enterprise 450 OEM board (AXi? or is that the U10+SCSI?) is a good foundation for a quad proc system. I actually kinda like Integrix's RAIDs, and they sell a cloner E450. As does Tatung and a large number of others. Don't buy Sun unless you have a nice discount with them or are into lots of $$$ pain.
If you really want to cook lotsa keys, drop 4 400MHZ Ultra2s in that pup and wire it into a hardware RAID (very little sucks ass more than software RAID).. Swizaeet..
Tell me about it. They even put it on the damn sticker! At least with leasing I only pay for the advertising I use..;)
Still, Intel charging extra $$$ to builders is fine by me: those builders can choose to build on AMD, Cyrix, Transmeta;).. And once Linux is done conquering the world, the choices widen even further..
Sorry to be a nudge but no-one seems to have answered this. I'm curious to see how this is implemented, and (with my semiconscious perl skills) possibly augment with more features, clean up cruft, document, etc...
Please make a statement about the source. Anything would be useful: o "it's so cruddy right now we're embarrassed to release it in this state: give us time to clean it up a bit, it'll be available X" o "we're going to turn it into a saleable product and make some m00la off it, v0.2 is all you're gettin' and if you don't like it you can lump it" o "oops, we forgot, here's the link to the tarball" o "you jackass, it'll be available when it's available, just like Quake, so quit yer whinin'" o "you jackass, we've had anonymous CVS for aeons now, here's the CVSROOT" o "you jackass, it's at (freshmeat|rob's page|foobar), you just didn't look hard enough"
Alpha 21164 bang/buck has been good for a couple of years, depending on how you use it.. It's just that the benchmark for exceptional power keeps rising with the PII waterline..
And don't forget mem bandwidth.. 440bx tops out at what, 800MBps? The Alpha LX runs at 1.3GBps.. And the 21264 runs at 5.2GBps.. dr00l...
There's gotta be more than that.. IIRC they've already released a no-cost closed drop-in replacement for Linux libm? The compiler's gotta be pretty smart to be a paid extra...
Still, I don't have a problem with it, as long as there's a free alternative available for those who want it (for price or political reasons)..
.... netrek has used 'em for years without trouble. However, the source _should_ be free, if only so people can contribute patches and see what _exactly_ they are running. You can download source to various netrek clients but those clients cannot connect to blessed servers, because the netrek world had this very same problem: clever folks would 'borg' their clients giving them auto torp det, auto plasma lance, auto phaser aim, etc..
Just don't give the private blessing key to anyone.
Besides, a form of the tech already exists, and is FREE (icecast).. Radio will survive as long as live content is appreciated, it'll just have to get used to digital technology..
btw: does IPv6 support multicast connectionless, unacknowledged (probably UDP) packets that a wireless content source would spew? In fact, going digital packet would pretty much obviate the need for the FCC, except as a content censor, if we went to packet and unique source addresses for radio broadcasting..
(check out Radio-Free WallaceFM http://208.201.18.9/shout/;)..
Notebook drives can handle _lots_ of Gs, even in operation.. The IBM GN series of Travelstar drives can handle 150G/2ms shocks.. Powered off it can handle 700G/1ms..
Question: hardware mpeg decoders are pure decoders and don't give two dingos kindeys about zones, right? So if your software DVD interface cares about zones, can't you simply use a different software DVD interface?
I'd think this would be easier than modifying consumer units (which can be and _IS_ being done..)
... if you're using a nutscrape browser. font scaling always makes fonts _waaaay_ too small on the Unix side. Also, set your default fonts and override document-specific fonts. I run 'New Century Schoolbook' at 14 point, and that same page looks just fine on a 1920x1200x24 Ultra10 monitor...
Swell. Guess it's time to fire up the old laptop and twiddle with winXX... Gotta love proprietary formats... btw: I watched it on a cow orker's slow winXX laptop, not bad..

because, by definition, an OS must have incorporated LVM and JFS to be considered civilized. And you must be able to boot off an LVM/JFS disk.
