XWindows gives you easy remotely-accessible GUI apps, on a per-app basis, in a pretty transparent way. You can't do that in Windows: you'd have to write a client/server architecture for each app.

This is super handy, even over dialup, when you're running GUI apps remotely, such as 'metatool' or the Sun SE perftools.

Does it make more sense to restart from scratch (via framebuffer drivers) and create a single-user single-system window system? Would it be faster/better to just fix what's wrong with X? Apple seems to think so, I'm not so sure. Part of it is deciding what's 'wrong' with X, and where and how it should be fixed.

M$ set the standard in nickel-and-diming users, from Windows 95 Day ONE.. Remember the Plus pack? It was a series of components that were initially free with 95 (in the betas) but were packaged along with a pinball game and sold for $50 extra.. 98 was a bugfix of 95 with a few device support features (USB support was the biggie, not sure if 95 ever got that as a separate upgrade), and SE was a paid bugfix of 98. ME of course was a monstrosity, and yes again a paid "bugfix" of SE. Not to mention the OEM-only nonsense with different 95, 98 patchlevels, which wreaked some havoc when it came to certain supported devices and stability fixes.. This looks to have ended with XP, but I don't have much experience with it except that it works better with Neverwinter Nights than did ME..

I haven't dealt with that since switching to Linux for home use in 97, then OS X 10.0 when it was released.. Just remembering it gives me the screaming heebie jeebies..

    How asinine.

As much as Time Warner pisses me off about broadband their digital stuff is actually pretty cool.

They've just started distributing HDTV-ready boxes which are free swaps for existing S-video boxes. I believe they're offering the premium HD channels, along with some midrange cable (like Discovery), but I don't think they have OTA HD like local TV stations yet, then again I don't have HDTV :/.

The S-video boxes were the only digi boxes available, and they had a full complement of outs (composite, s-video, analog rca and toslink), which I was able to use with my receiver's DBS input.

They just activated the video on demand for HBO, Cinemax, TMC and Showtime, and it's actually fucking sweet, particularly since much of it I've seen so far (including Odyssey 5 and Jeremiah) is in DD5.1. The channels feature some movies playing that month on each particular channel, and for HBO it's neat since they have the HBO movies as well as some episodes of series like Sex in the City and Oz. They really need to put everything on the big hard drive in the sky though, every episode of every series, even if the movies rotate in the schedule. It's boosted the price per month by about $5 on my combo package (cable + roadrunner), and each on demand set alacarte is $6.95/mo. Where's IFC on demand tho?

They also have the pay-per-view on demand which works OK, with some specials and odd choices. For instance, in the last 2 months they had a bunch of Hitchcock for $1.95/24h, and I 'rented' Fahrenheit 451 on special. Also, they had the Rankin Bass Tolkien 'movies' on special along with LOTR. Not too rapacious in their charges (no rewinds and returns either), but there isn't much they offer that I want to see that I haven't bought on dvd, and they don't have DD5.1 sound yet. I'd love it if they offered a 'cult' on-demand channel with discounted cult flix like 'a boy and his dog', 'repo man', 'evil dead 2', etc..

  11. Policy goals of taxation on Oregon Considers GPS-based Road Taxes · · Score: 1

Really, at this point the goals of fuel taxes should only be related to road maintenance, insurance and emissions control. For noncommercial vehicles, this is best done by a fuel consumption tax, since the cause/effect is so evident. Raise the gasoline tax to a point high enough to cause discomfort to the populace, and they start looking for lighter, more efficient vehicles which use less fuel (lower taxes) and weigh less (less mangling of roads, thus less maintenance needed, thus less money for maintenance needed). Raise it a little more to subsidize ethanol and biodiesel in passenger cars, thus reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Fuck the poor, they can get out of their underinsured, undermaintained polluting jalopies, take mass transit and put money saved towards not being poor anymore.

Diesel, being linked to large heavy vehicles and consumer price indexes (shipping, power, etc) should be handled differently. Road taxes by weight (the system used today) with moderate taxes on petrodiesel should be in place, and some of that petro tax used to subsidize biodiesel and biodiesel conversion subsidies.

I'm thinking US$3/gal gasoline, $1.75/gal diesel should get people moving towards lower fuel use (less envirodamage and terrorism subsidizing).

Of course, I drive a diesel. Think globally, drive locally.. ;)

ps: one of my friends recently scoffed at the idea of a hybrid SUV. Frankly, I think SUVs should be the EARLIEST adopters. People want them, not just for the tax dodge. They're pretty useful for what they offer, and people have legitimate needs for traction, space and ruggedness. Let's just get them to 40MPG, preferably hybrid diesel wankel power :)

Obvious features I'd like to see though:

more OSXisms, like glowing borders around selected textareas (ala omniweb)

Better theme support, including a theme/preference for 'Textured' (aka brushed metal). This stuff can be done with external apps like InterfaceBuilder, but it should be easier.

UserAgent quick-selects and customization within Preferences, ala Opera

SOME added mail functionality, such as include full webpage as attachment. I like 0.6 adding send link, but I want send page as well to mail copies of 'registration required' pages.

    more stability.

better 'threading' behavior: I notice that tabs behave 'blocked' by other tabs' slowness or failure to load pages. Each tab (and browser window obviously) should download and behave independently of any other.

more features, including autofill, more keyboard shortcuts, etc.

    better documentation

better interface into 'Helper Application' settings, such as RealPlayer and QuickTime. Ideally Chimera would ask me before it loads something that runs within a helper app whether I want to save or run. This should be configurable and is pretty much a standard item in modern browsers. 0.6 addresses this a bit, but I'd prefer to have an additional option to choose per-click, in order to best avoid rogue code.

    Integrate Privoxy :)

    Better performance and stability :)

I don't change web habits often, but I have gone from Mozilla web+mail to OS X Mail + Chimera and I'm quite happy with the switch. Chimera should be the only web browser ANY OS X user ever needs, from Grandmas to Geeks. And, of course, being an OS X program, it needs to be pretty, easy to use, and very very powerful. In fact, as it stands now, it IMHO should be the standard OS X browser distributed by Apple, but only when it's a bit more stable (it crashes often on the NYTimes site, and particularly when closing tabs or going from one site to another by cmd-l, typing a new url, and hitting enter when a different page was already loading).

I only hope that moving to the 1.2 (or any other post 1.0) branch won't be too painful or duplicative of work.. I already don't like that the kill-tab behavior is 'backwards' and that throws me when I use Moz..
