nah, we should just let it soar by and hit the alien colonization. Unless they are intelligent enough to try and land two space shuttles on it and dig 800 feet deep and drop a nuke down in it and detonate it remotely before it hits zero barrier (hmm, sounds kinda like a movie to me... Arma-who?).
I agree, it use to happen to me a lot when I used to be a Word (windoze) user. I would make a document in one word version, save it to disk then take it to a machine with a printer and whoop! A different version of word, sure it opens, but the format is crazy, ascii characters everywhere and blank lines in certain areas.
I have never seen that problem actually occur with plain ole' text files.
> You have to include the cost of ownership. Nobody will convince me that Linux is cheaper to maintain than NT.
Linux is Cheaper to maintain than NT, you just have to have patience and time. As for NT maintaince (spelling?) if something is screwed up you hae to look for a patch, reinstall, call for support..etc.. As for linux, you have to hack and slash through the code, unless the community already knows a way around whatever you are doing.
As for stability, sure I have seen NT machines reach a few months (4 max with my own eyes), but the ones I saw werent doing anything, not carrying a load, not doing database stuff, not serving, just standalone machines. I have a friend who has been running a linux box (debian) and the uptime is over 370+ days (over a year). And that system does mail server, nameserver, ftp server, shell server, web server. Im not saying NT isnt stable, Im just saying that I dont believe it is "as" stable as linux. This is just my $00.02
I think they realized that without the users (the page owners and the people who browse through them) there would be no traffic, which means they make no money. No banners are clicked, no links are gone to. They could not take that kind of a hit.
Also there are legal issues. What if I decided to put a bunch of illegal content onto one of the pages there? They own it, good, they own my responsibility (hence, they are responsible for anything on the pages, via Kiddie porn etc..)
I think that is a very good point. If a bunch of people started putting nekkid pics of little kids on pages that yahoo and geocities claimed to OWN, then they could be facing some trouble.
I have to agree that this is part of (if not the only reason) reason that they said this.
Just because software for a certain OS has memory leaks or is a bit buggy doesnt make that OS worse than an OS that does not have software that has memory leaks and bugs. I am one to agree that nutscrape for linux is awful, I have never had it crash a machine but it has died so many times on its own. This doesnt show that Linux is worse than windows though. Windows itself is a memory leak;)
That my friend, is A LOT of coffee, how do you do it? Experience? If you cut back a little then you could sleep and work at the same time;) Like the rest of us do.
I use to be able to drink 6 cups in the morning, but i think it was speeding up my heart. Like a no-doze;)
I am 19 and switched to linux right before my first year of college. A lot of my friends in college switched to linux because of that same reason. We have labs and labs of sparcs.
30 cups? no no no, read the article, its said a human would have to drink 100+ cups of coffee to have the same effect that the mice had. And even then (after 100 cups of coffee) it is still only 70% effective. Doesnt sound like its worth it since 100 cups of coffee would probably make you go insane;)

I agree with marcus, Linus knows that its the users that have helped linux grow. Not some company. We are the ones who sent in our feedback on kernels and distros.

If we did get a linux box on it and a sufficient energy supply, could you imagine the uptime when we saw it the next time?
When are we going to see some statistics on some real life tests, and when is the male model going to come out? (*laughin*)
;)
I guess it isnt too far fetched, I mean hey, whatever blows your skirt up, or bra for this matter

You were not the only one my friend, many of us put that watermark up on the most hated list (up there with jar jar).
I never used and never will use their site, nor click on any link to it or use a banner to it.
Amen.

Very true, I know of a few friends on slashdot that use FreeBSD, Digital UNIX (OSF 1), etc..
;)
I personally run linux on two machines and FreeBSD on one machine. Although it tends to hate my guts and go ape sh*t on me

I wasnt flaming, i dont add the smiley on the end of flames. I was just saying that 100+ cups of coffee make people go insane. ;)
