I've transferred all of my domains to dotster. They're $15/year, and usually run a $12.95 special every now and then that covers moving a domain to them AND renewing it for a year.
Yes, they're a bit more than other registrars, but the service is *great* and makes up for it; I've been able to reach a human on the phone *fast* (the ONE time I needed to do so). "cheapest price" isnt always the best thing; you get what you pay for.
Where do you get $2450 to $3950? You must be looking at Sun's RAM prices - which are outrageous. 512meg modules for the Blade 1000 are $58.49 right now from Crucial; which means that you can get 2gig of RAM for the machine for a little over $200. For disks, you can use normal IDE drives, or add a commonly-available PCI SCSI card (Symbios 8751SP) for around $50, and then use SCSI devices.
I've got a SunBlade 1000 (their UltraSPARC-III based "big daddy" workstation) on my desk here at home, and have a Blade 100 (with Expert3D-Lite, an additional $1K graphics option) at work, and for day-to-day use (windowmaker, Mozilla, SSH, etc) they're "just about" the same, despite the 400mhz CPU speed difference and 256k of L2 cache versus 8MB, for the tasks I do all the time.
Sun has been giving Solaris away for free for a little over two years now, AFAIK.
>Go call Sun or IBM up and ask them how much their
>operating environments run
Last time I looked, Solaris cost absolutely nothing. You can download ISO images of the latest release from Sun, burn them yourself, and run it without any license fees, etc, at all on any Sun box with less than eight CPUs, no matter what you're using the machine for (business or personal). If you want a development environment, you can get the Forte compiler suite and a 30-day license (which can be renewed indefinitely) as a free download, or you can get all the GNU goodies at Sunfreeware. When it comes to applications, the StarOffice suite is also a free download. All you have to pay for is the machine itself, electricity to run it, and an Internet connection for the downloads.
"stripped down"? No, Sun just doesent include every package and application under the sun with a nice point-and-drool web-based sysadmin interface.
Personally, I *like* building up a system from scratch from a "bare" OS install. I know exactly what goes on my system, exactly where its installed, and know that 1000 other packages that I *dont* need havent been installed as well.
When did Slashdot suddenly become "The Place" to
complain about license and copyright violations?
"Oh my god, its a license violation! Get
Slashdot on the phone IMMEDIATELY!"
Surprised I havent seen a "do , or we'll post
about you on slashdot" yet.
In this case, I agree with the author of the
code about getting proper credit for his work
since it was reused - but all of these GPL/
license/embedded linux stories lately are
getting tiring.
No - but spending time ranting about a software license is definitely less worthwhile than spending the time helping out the Red Cross, etc. Even if you're not near NYC, PA, or DC, you can help your local organizations to prepare and be ready in case the same kind of disaster happens in YOUR town.
Linux is not life, as much as some people would like to believe it. Computers are not life. They're important tools, but in the long run, people are more important.
I'll probably get labeled as a troll for not agreeing with the masses, but right now, there are more important things to worry about than having a penis war over a software license.
Anybody care to email me and tell me what
happened in the last scene with Alanis as
God? Due to stupid people wanting to leave
the theater as soon as they saw credits on a
black screen, I missed it.
Maybe HURD existed as a concept, but i *still* dont see it existing in a usable fashion. Maybe the Debian/HURD project will bear fruit, but as far as I know, HURD is still one of those 'research exercises'.
Its his project, I say he can run it like he wants to.
As for the whole GNU/Linux thing; stallman just wants control over anything under the "GNU" umbrella, because he's STILL pissed at Linus having "stolen his thunder" out from under him by beating Hurd to the punch.
and I do have to point out here - I'm a Mac fan as well as a SPARC/Solaris and other UNIX fan. I'm typing this on a G4 Cube running OS X, which sits next to an Ultra 60, a SunBlade 100, and a 700Mhz/1gig/GF2MX Athlon gaming machine.
Revolutionary? Is that why the Airport base
station is nothing more than a Lucent/Orinoco bronze 802.11b PCMCIA card in a fancy
enclosure?
Airport is nothing more than slightly-repackaged normal 802.11b, which was around (and also as 802.11) a long time before Apple thought of including it in their products.
For those people using Solaris (or any other *nix with a "dd"), here's how to strip the "virus"
part of the attachment away from the "document"
part, so you can safely view the documents:
You can also create a file C:\NTLDR (contents dont matter, I use "fuck microsoft")
that will make an "upgrade" version of Win95/98/ME pass the "previous version installed" check.
So, i format clean, create C:\NTLDR, copy the
Win98/ME install files to c:\WIN98, and run the
install off the hard drive. Works great,
and I've done this about 10-15 times.
Why get all up in arms over this? Its *going*
to happen, and you cant exactly use a US court
to force anybody in other countries to do anything, especially over something like the
GPL (is it enforceable in court, anyway?)
I'd think there would be more important things
to devote time and money on, than worrying about
people adhering to licenses in other countries
that dont even obey copyright laws in the first
place..
*me too*!

If you let the domain expire, and someone else registered it, I say you're going to have a hard time *taking it back* from its now-rightful owner.

OpenWindows has been completely dropped with Solaris 9; you only get CDE. Good riddance.
For another exciting episode of "As the Hard Drive Turns"! Open-Source soap opera at its finest..
I much prefer the Quickies to "Slashback".

you've been doing this troll so long, shouldnt you adjust it to say "dead at 55" by now?

Look at the address. Its different from the
"real" View Askew:
View Askew Productions (VIEWASKEW-DOM)
P.O. Box 400
Red Bank, NJ 07701-0400
US
Domain Name: VIEWASKEW.COM
$199 AUD is roughly equivalent to $99 USD.

dd bs=512 skip=268 if=infected.filename.ext of=disinfected.filename
Yeah, but then someone would trademark it,
and sue the people who used it.
KernAll [tm]
dammit people its "kernel" not "kernal".

Reminds me of Project Pluto, the "Flying Crowbar", a nuclear ramjet researched in the 50s.
