  1. Why are rockets so hard to make today? on Ask The Bad Astronomer · · Score: 1

In the 1960s there was a huge push to put a man on the moon. Countless hours and dollars were pored into the program, resulting in several rockets, including the Saturn V. I would assume the plans for these rockets still exist, and could be used today to build new rockets to put people into orbit, the moon, and beyond.

Why, then, is SpaceX working so hard to develop and test new rockets? Were they starting from ground zero, or were they able to access Saturn V specs and plans? We had rockets that got us off the planet before - if we threw enough money at it couldn't we just build new Saturn Vs?

  3. Re:uswest.net does exactly the same thing.... on Is Qwest's ISP Deal Really Worth the Hassle? · · Score: 1

I use uswest.net right now, but will be dropping them soon...

When I first signed up, I filled out the online form, then a tech person contacted me to confirm and configure. I was running Mac OS 8.5 (8.6 now). The set up they tried to give me was for OS 7.5, and would not work with my system. I tried to have the tech just give me the info so I could configure my machine myself, but it took me talking to 4 different tech people over three evenings before they gave up trying to tell me there was no other way besides their way and just give me the tcp/ip settings.

After I was up and running, I found I could only connect at 24600, not the 56K they advertise. Turns out uswest.net was "unable to get the modem strings" my iMac uses and could not make their system work any faster. After much complaining I was told that uswest.net wasn't really supporting their dial-up system any more. Instead, they were focusing on ISDN and DSL, and would I like to sign up for either? Oh, wait, the wires in my apartment are kind of old and won't really work with ISDN or DSL.

Anyway, Qwest now owns USWest, and uswest.net... I wonder when they'll say my system is no longer compatable with theirs?

  4. Shocking, but Not Surprising on More Stories From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

The steak knife thing happened here in Colorado. The kid grabbed her Mom's lunch by mistake. When she discovered the knife, she turned it in to her teacher LIKE SHE WAS TAUGHT TO DO. The Principal then suspended her based on the district's zero tolerance policy.

I taught elementary school for four years, then jumped into the corporate world (better pay). Most teachers care about the kids, and cringe when dumb things like the knife incident happen.

What happened at Columbine High is nightmarish. I understand what could have pushed those two kids over the edge - junior high and high school were hell for me, too. But something in their heads must not have been wired right - to plan such destruction, to take so many lives.

I lie awake now wondering how what I would have done had I been a teacher at CHS. Could I have stopped them? Could I have saved my class, my students? I hope so. Could I have seen what was coming? I don't know.

Schools are crowded - teachers see so many students and try to make a difference in their lives, but more and more teachers are asked to act as parents, too. It's no longer readin, 'riting, and 'rithmethc - teachers now have to be social workers, cops, judges, and parents. Overworked and underpaid, but still trying to make a difference.

I remember my time in high school hell; that pain helped me decide to teach, to try to make a difference in a child's life.

Will I go back to teaching? Probably. I can't stay away from it. Will things change? I hope and pray.
