True. On the East Coast they know that you are: 1. Disciplined 2. Trained 3. Possible Security Clearance 4. Mature
On the West Coast (specifically Northwest) they know that: 1. You Have No degree 2. No Commercial Experience. DoD Experience doesn't count. 3. Repeat 1 & 2
So if you're going to get out... Get a job with a DoD contractor FIRST!! Then spread out into other sectors...
Several members of the Portland Linux Unix Group have volunteered to assist local schools in the Portland OR Metro area in installing and configuring computers with the Linux operating system and related free software.
The project is our way of saying thanks to Riverdale School. The school is very generous in providing a facility for a monthly Linux Clinic. Riverdale also proves to be a great example of how schools can cost effectively solve problems when entering the Internet.
Enough PLUG members have volunteered for us to seriously get started. However, we are always looking for more volunteers and interested parties to join us!

Previous work exists in GemStar's Graphical environment.
Maybe even some of the Amiga Workbenches can predate this.

Prior to any of this WWW stuff we had the compu-serve and prodigy networks. If I remember right they had something similar to this in the middle 80's.
It isn't rocket science after all...
