  1. There is no such thing as X Windows! on Ask Eric S. Raymond Anything · · Score: 1

The X Consortium requests that the following names be used when referring to this software:

    X
    X Window System
    X Version 11
    X Window System, Version 11

Why do people insist on calling it X Windows? It isn't frickin' windows! ok?!? :) thank you.

  2. This does prove something on PCWeek "Hack This Page" Cracked · · Score: 1

As much as we may hate to admit, this does actually prove some weaknesses, not in linux, but in unix in general. The flexibility of the operating system allows it to be exploited easier in some situations. Since you can do basically anything to the machine from the command line, anything the possibly has access to the command line can do anything, as well if it is compromised.

On NT, this isn't true. You have to use their little GUI to add users and such, so it would be pretty hard to actually be able to intrude the box by exploiting something like a CGI script. You may be able to erase files and things like that, but not actually get in and make yourself an account.

So, basically, the reason Linux lost was because it is flexible and extremely controllable from a command prompt. Can Microsoft say anything like that about NT? This may lead to a loss in security, but I guess it just makes sure we do our homework when setting up remotely accessed services.

The first thing to do would probably be to find the architecture. If it's sun4 anything, it should theoretically work. I think I'd consider leaving sunos on it, just for fun. If it has anything funky like smp, it would only use it in sunos. Check out www.sunhelp.org for some info on the machine and how to crack into sunos without the root pw (maybe you'll get some cool secret gov't stuff from the hard drive)

  11. power mongers on U.S. Government Wants Public Encryption Software Removed · · Score: 1

This is a pretty simple issue; the set of people against encryption in the government are power mongers who think the government is bigger, better, and more powerful than the people it serves. Since they are somewhat in control of this body which is so great and powerful, it gives them a power trip. This is completely inappropriate.

The logic behind encryption law is absolutely stupid. There are many more common ways of hiding evidence that the government should be worried about. What are we going to do, ban all toilets since they provide a method of getting rid of your drug evidence? What criminal is going to encrypt his or her evidence anyway? Why not just erase it?

  15. Desktop Chooser on Redhat to support KDE developement · · Score: 2

Ok, now all we need is a nice XDM-based desktop chooser system, so you can easily choose between window managers/user environments, using the Xsession system. I had the KDM setup for a while to do something like this, and it was very nice. If that came with redhat by default, it would make beginners able to use the system right off, as easily as win95. The system boots right into KDM or whatever and the user is off.
