Ok, we've seen it from their perspective, now can they see it from ours?
Why is that we, as consumers, have to put up with one company's product having great feature X and another company's product having great feature Y but no company's product having both X and Y because of patents?
In a market without patents the motivation to innovate is greater as only new innovations are profitable. A company's product is not measured by how many improvements they "own" but by how many improvements they come up with in a year. Eventually the product will be "perfect" and companies can compete on price and service and all those other things that matter too.
Dude, this kind of speculative crap is published every 6 months. Going from theory to practice is the science and until they do any they're just masturbating in public.
The paper claims to have shown how to make a nano-mechanical computer using contemporary silicon production facilities. I've gotta wonder, what are you waiting for? Pay the $10,000.. send off your image to be made and test the damn thing.
This is like half science.. "Here's my hypothesis, someone test it for me."
If only there were more attempts at making laws to enforce illegal downloading.. or even making no download illegal. Assuming any actually are.. the complete lack of case law on anyone, ever, being sued or incarcerated for "illegal downloading" not being a good enough indication to some people.
We need a dedicated police force to track botnets and their creators and run them to ground.
In fact, we need a specially trained police force in every country in the world with international co-operation between each of them.
I suggest that we fund it with an "Internet License" and that could include some education component (but don't get too excited, it won't be anything useful).
That's right. For example, most online FPS games make me feel lame and inadequate most the time and then, when someone's connection dies or they have to go feed their cat and I finally manage to kill someone, it aides my ability to delude myself into thinking I might be getting better.
But then who are we to intervene? Afterall, it's not our fault these poor saps over in China flunked out of interdimensional soul-school and got themselves born into the world as dirt poor factory laborers in a communist regime, right? Sucks to be them, amirite?! Damn right you should be smug! I mean, you wouldn't have been born in the good old US of A if you didn't deserve it. In regards to this... as much as I understand the point you're trying to make.. where I was born and who I am wasn't a lottery. My parents and their parents and their parents worked to make the world I was born into. I think it kind of sucks that you ignore all their hard work and belittle it into some sort of cosmic lottery.
I find it kinda hard to believe that any significant number of people will choose the more expensive product because of their belief in human rights.. otherwise, those exact same people would be contributing to human rights organizations already and there wouldn't be an human rights issues in the world.
But perhaps you have a great idea. How about governments put an import tax on any product that is made by children in sweat shops and then actually give the money they collect to human rights organizations..
And the result will be that China will be unable to bring wealth into their country through trade and the living conditions of the people there will go down even more. Good plan.
Personally, I'm for outsourcing of software development too.. probably because I'm in Australia and that's one of the places that US companies outsource to:)
Cause if there are people in China who are willing to work for cheaper than people in your country then you best make sure business and consumers can't benefit from that.
Is Freenet ready yet? What do you mean they're still coding it in Java?

In regards to the 3d printer.. if it can print anything then it can print physical objects with DRM built in. The result?
Second Life.
(aka, a nightmare of artificial scarcity).
They're not building shit. Their theorizing and not following up on it. This is another grant money machine.
Heh, attempting to turn any non-rivalrous good into a rivalrous good is doomed to failure.

Damn! You so beat me to it!

Hopefully you're not just speaking out your ass, and hopefully they don't think one "stunt" is enough to solve the problem.
They get paid.
There's no hope of that.

No, no, and no.
The problem is the assholes who take over people's computers to send spam and flood web sites.
The solution is a well funded police force to hunt them down.
Uhhhh.. see, I'm kinda of the opinion that vigilante action is only bad if there are proper channels. There are none.
That's right. For example, most online FPS games make me feel lame and inadequate most the time and then, when someone's connection dies or they have to go feed their cat and I finally manage to kill someone, it aides my ability to delude myself into thinking I might be getting better.
It's called an ecosystem. The race to the bottom is only attempted by companies who have nothing to lose.
Or keep buying their products and use means other than "voting with your wallet" to encourage the people in that country to emancipate themselves.
I have no idea what you are trying to say. Please, make an actual argument without all the assumptions and biases and point scoring and I'll reply.

If that's the goal then that's admirable. However there's really no indication in this case that this is the goal.
Cause the only way to do it is by force.
And the result will be that China will be unable to bring wealth into their country through trade and the living conditions of the people there will go down even more. Good plan.
It's their country, it's their responsibility to improve it. Us not supporting them in the global economy isn't exactly going to *help* is it?
