The first of those comments of mine was replying to this post. If you actually bother to read it you'll see the kind of lawyerin' you get from a pro bono lawyer. Open and shut case of copyright violation and she can't even get them to return her phone calls.
So excuse me if I think that maybe it would be better for the cause if the EFF didn't pit pro bono amateurs against high paid professionals, inevitably lose and set bad precidents for us all.
If, like this case, they go out and find someone with something to gain from winning the case and get them to finance a real legal team, they might have a better chance of doing good.
dude, it's not the EFF we have fun bashing, it's the pro bono lawyers they get to screw cases for them. In this case, they found someone who isn't pro bonehead, so what? Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Please remain ignorant of all lowlevel details of your deployment and development platforms. Please continue to treat both computers and the tools you use to program as magic black boxes. That way old dogs like me will still have a job.
it's about participary culture. The era of people passively consuming media is over. Too many people are now pulling out iMovie and making their own mixups. Once again, the people have spoken, and copyright is in the way.
Unfortunately, what is more likely to come out of congress is tougher laws to "educate" people about copyright restrictions.
Guess what causes the fires? That's right, "improving the network". What does the study show about network engineer's inability to keep their grubby paws out of things that are working perfectly fine thank you very much.
Dude, hire a real lawyer and get those violations sorted. If you need motivation, tell your lawyer to demand damages.. maybe you can find a no-pay-no-win lawyer that will do it. Otherwise, I really gotta wonder, why the hell did you bother copyrighting your work in the first place?
Making threats that you can't even be bothered paying others to follow through on for you is pretty lame.. and that's exactly what copyright is, a threat to sue.
Way to totally miss the point. It doesn't matter what you or I think. It matters, to Sony's bottom line, what the bible belt thinks. You can't dictate to people what they should want from a product.
Basically you've just outlined why the PS3 is not something the majority of parents in the US feel they should buy for their children.
You're just as bad as the Blender developers who use 3d Studio Max as their scapegoat for everything. "Blender isn't user friendly!" "Yeah, but how user friendly is 3ds max?" It's not about holding yourself to the same standard as the competition, it's about holding yourself to a gold standard.
The University is in no way responsible for what students do on their network.. any more than a phone company is responsible for what people do with their telephones. As such, they should butt-the-fuck-out of the private matter between the student and the copyright holder.
Thing is, if you use open source software, you benefit from the fact that other people exist who do want to fix problems they run into. I ran into this bug with Visual Studio 2005 SP1 the other day:
Just about everyone I know who installed SP1 has run into this problem. We're all professional developers. Check out Microsoft's "resolution":
Thank you for reporting this issue to Microsoft. It has now been fixed and the fix will be available in a future release. That's right. It's fixed, but you can't have the bug fix. It's only a critical part of the language they've screwed up. It only means you have to hunt through a few million lines of code to add workarounds for it. We'll give you the fix in "a future release".
You talk like a prick. Sound like a prick. Have the point of view of a prick. Claiming to be superiour because it's your job doesn't mean anything. You could be just lying for all we know. I bet you anything you can't make a rational argument if you tried, so to me, you ARE a prick.
The fundamental disconnect here is that you think you're so important because you "work the problem" as you say. My argument (you know, the part of discussion that is productive) is that the problem isn't people breaking into your servers.. the problem is complete lack of improvement in the security of software. For that you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
Stop helping companies fix their fuckups. Stop helping companies cover up their fuckups. Stop buying products from companies that keep making fuckups.
Uh huh. Do you wanna listen to a 50 cent concert? Or Shannon Noll? No, didn't think so.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I see someone who has been brainwashed by big media to think that.

Never let the truth get in the way of a funny comment. Lighten up, eh?
Well the point is that PCs have products that meet the needs of worried parents. If the PS3 doesn't, then it won't sell.

Will there be parental locks and a "net nanny" service available for concerned parents?
This should have been part of Sony's basic market research.. it's a real need that many parents have, no matter what you might think of it.
You forget, she's an EFF lawyer.. losing when there are overwelming odds in their favour is what EFF lawyers do.
Here's a hint: it's a science chart.
You might as well be complaining that they didn't include snowboarding.
it'll probably show up in 6 months time and I'll be like "what the fuck is this?"
Look good on my wall though.
What, you don't own a Mac? I'm thinking we've found the perfect people to sell your profile to, thanks!

And be more polite to people, prick.
If that's the case then there's nothing to lose by proposing the prizes is there?
Your entire post is summed up in the second part of mine, "and demand competition".
They should use exclusively private launch vehicles and demand competition from their suppliers.
You're the assholes who keep buying the same software every year even though it has big fat flaws in it and better alternatives exist.
