When I say "at will" I mean "without effort".. which is pretty much the standard definition of "at will".
For example, my employment contract is "at will". If they don't wanna pay me anymore they tell me and stop paying me. If they had to "change their lifestyle" to stop paying me, that wouldn't be "at will".
How far are we talkin' here? I live in the burbs and it's at most a 20 minute walk from anywhere to the post office. Not that I can imagine an american walking for 20 minutes..
Spawl != Less walking opportunities. That's your social conditioning talking. You think Spawl -> pedestrian unfriendliness and pedestrian unfriendliness == people afraid to walk. But it doesn't have to be that way.
I don't know if all the US is like this, but every spawling area that I've been to in the US is insanely pedestrian unfriendly. There are very few crosswalks on major roads, forcing people to dash across, typically to an offramp that has "no pedestrians" signs on it, even though there is no pedestrian access ways nearby. I've never seen a foot bridge over a major road, nor a tunnel. In fact, I've been to parts of the US which don't provide ANY pedestrian access to a mall. I guess they figure that if you don't drive a car then you don't have enough money to shop in their store.
Compare this to Australia and Europe, where there is as much urban sprawl as the worst parts of the US but every road has a sidewalk, every set of lights has a crosswalk, and foot bridges and tunnels are commonplace. This results in two things: getting in your car to go get milk and bread is considered lazy and, as a result, there's lots of small "corner stores" to get milk and bread almost everywhere people live. Kids walk to school, and/or catch public transport. And seeing as there are lots of people on the streets, street crime is virtually unheard of - it's a lot easier to mug someone if the only people nearby are in cars with their windows rolled up because they're afraid of street crime.
I love the way 64 bit PC's from Dell come with Windows XP Home Edition (32 bit) on them. You can only upgrade the OS to Win64 by paying $1000 extra, and you can't NOT pay for the OS. Maybe I should ask for a refund of this XP Home Edition CD.. too bad I already opened the packaging to use it in QEMU on my Linux box.
Where's all these constitution loving guns nuts I'm always hearing about? How come no-one puts a bullet in people like this? Is it just the shoot terms in the US that cause such apathy in the redneck population? Or is it just that gun nuts are too poor these days to afford bus fare?
You don't have to use C or C++ to use GTK+ or Qt, but that won't stop anyone from pointing out the obvious fact that if you don't use the language for which the toolkit was designed you'll not get the full worth of that toolkit.
The standard API for Mac OS X isn't even intended for industry standard languages. If you've gotta code in Objective-C, for fuck sake, why would anyone make applications for your platform. Oh, that's right, the endless supply of unskilled computer users who have demonstrated they are willing to pay top dollar for trivial software.
Yeah, imagine a civilization that, having discovered enlightenment, actually embraced it and dedicated their industrial base to further it, instead of shuffling it off to the minor specialists who they then make beg for funding, typically by militarizing their research.
To paraphrase: But Sir! If we only send 8 probes it'll take billions of years to search a mere 4% of the Milky Way galaxy!
That's why you have to make the probes self replicating.. utilizing in-situ resources to make more probes at each star they visit, the growth becomes exponential and it only takes a few thousand years to search the entire galaxy. And seeing as we're visiting all these stars anyway, how about looking for planets that don't have life on them, but have nice suitable conditions for starting life on them. Cover a virgin planet with a wide variety of Earth lifeforms and fly on.
Yeah, theoretically, but practically all they have to do is offer to provide source code to any third party. If they refuse anyone who comes knocking, and doesn't have the phone, there's nothing the third party can do about it because they don't have a contract. Nothing except report it to the copyright holder, who could then *maybe* sue for copyright infringement.. I say maybe because it's questionable whether or not you ever have to honor the offer.. The GPL just says you have to provide the offer. I guess they figure that the person receiving the offer can take care of themselves using contract law.
and when you say "give people" you mean "give the people they have sold the device to" right? Cause that's the only people to which they have given the binaries and, one hopes, an offer to provide source code upon request. Of course, they probably haven't even given them an offer.. that would expose them to breach of contract lawsuits. In which case, they are in breach of copyright instead, and the copyright holders of this software need to sue them ASAP. If they have any sense, they'll seek damages.
scoff all you want. You wouldn't believe the kinds of math that have been applied to gnome sequencing.. stuff that was discovered in completely different domains. That's the beauty of math.
please excuse me if I cause anyone offense in saying this, but maybe if Mac users didn't refer to crackers as "scum" and other names, they wouldn't ostracize the platform. I do appreciate that crackers are finally being recognized by others as the freedom fighters I've always considered them to be. It's about time.
Most people don't usually "break encryption" when they crack copy control mechanisms. Breaking encryption is something people write scientific papers about.
To break copy control, you just re-implement the algorithm and find the keys. Or you let the original code run and grab the unencrypted output.. which is the simplest way.. and yeah, if I gave a shit about iTunes I'd give it a go, but yeah, I don't.

I've lived in Sydney, and I found no need to drive a car.
Until we have so much technology that we can reshape ourselves at will!

Isn't it interesting how someone who isn't in your country has more rights than someone who is in your country.. hmm..
what's your fuckin' point?

seriously, how can you tolerate a US Attorney General who questions such a fundamental right?
This whole "how much damage can he possibly cause in 4 years?" attitude is appalling.
they want their article back.

Ya know how often people sue for copyright violation on GPL code? I'll give you a hint: .
Meh, it's still a phenomenally short amount of time.. on a galactic scale.

The Launch Loop is so much more than that.
Cracking DRM is the only effective way to get across the message that it is an impossible proposition.
