I've built a PC in a shoebox. It was my old Packard Hell 486 board. Piece of junk but it was still fun. Put slackware on it and even had it running X with the onboard video with 512k vram.:P
gateway does it too. In some cases, it's possible to still use the CD. All you need is for someone on IRC to send you PRECOPY1.cab and PRECOPY2.cab, and in some cases the setup.exe, then you're set to go.
I worked at a networking company last semester, and we ran CAT5 for over 300 ft. on more than one occasion. It works. 300 ft. is just what you're SUPPOSED to stop. Why are we talking about this anyway?
I've never played Everquest or Ultima Online, but I've always been intriqued by the idea of an Internet RPG. How does it work exactly? Do you need a decent internet connection to use it (can I play it over my 56k)?
And I wonder when LucasArts will start releasing Linux versions of their games....
yeah I've been through that before... Duke Nukem 3D REALLY hated the winkey. As a matter of fact, I think 3D Realms put out a utility to disable the winkey...
It disturbs me that you refer to music as information, data, bits and bytes. Music isn't information, it's art. Dude.

You raise an excellent point about the VCR/cassete tape and recording deal.
Now, here is the rebuttal:
You actually state in your post that it is not an exact replica of the show/song. In the case of the television show, it isn't. Nearly all channels include the little icon in the corner of their screen at least once every few minutes (if not all the time). Of course, this doesn't apply to premium channels or pay-per-view.
But the difference with mp3s are that the changes are not that obvious. No reasonable person can claim to be able to tell an audible difference between a high-quality mp3 (one not made with a gay encoder anyway (sorry didn't mean to offend any homosexuals)) and the CD. If you do... you're a liar.
Here's an example:
There is a local band here called Pain (Pain rocks!), whose members are friends of a good friend of mine. I happened to get an autographed copy of their latest CD (it rocks!), and of course, the way I treat CDs, I didn't want to damage it carrying it around in my car. So, I took my handy-dandy cdparanoia and my handy-dandy bladeenc and made the mp3s, transferred them to my Rio, and borrowed my friend's handy-dandy CDR to make a copy of the CD for me. There is NO audible difference between the original and the copy.
All your trying-to-sound-smart-talk about waveforms not resembling mp3s is bullshit. They're the same damn thing.
Don't make the generalization that all slashdotters are abandoning the law when it comes to stealing music. I bet the majority of the readers of this site aren't thieves....
Hell, stealing is not only a crime, it's one of the Ten Commandments, which should bother you if you believe in that kinda stuff (I don't)
Maybe if you didn't come in announcing, "Hey I'm a theif!", I would be "gentle". But you are a thief who steals money from artists who deserve their money.
Don't get me wrong, I hate the RIAA just as much as the next music-lover. Hell, I hate any kind of control freak.
mp3s are a good thing, as long as they are not abused. This Napster thing, and this CuteMX thing, is abuse.

FYI - My mp3 collection consists of every song that I own. eg, I own all the CDs that I have mp3s of. Collection runs about 6 gigs.
I hate virii, or viruses, or whatever and the paranoia that goes along with them. We have reasonably nice computers at school (P2/266, 32mb, etc etc) that run win95 with Netscape 4 and Word 97. One would think the systems would be reasonably fast, but NO!!!! The stupid admins for the network here load not 1, not 2, but 3 virus scanners into memory! (you know, the gay little ones that scan every file that you open) Netscape takes over a minute (yes I timed it) to load on those decent machines. Takes less time to load on my old 486/66 box. Damn it all to hell
PS - HTML is gay for anything except web pages. In point of fact, I don't even like the simple HTML formatting on/., but that's just me
I'm an avid Window Maker user, but have tried E in the past. It was way back, like DR14 or something, but I didn't like it because I love the little blinky lights of my dockapps:). Will they work under the new E? If they do I would seriously consider switching, since I like GNOME so much and WM's GNOME support is flaky.
I thought the original plan was to divide them up into two companies, hardware and software? Though I must admit dividing the OS and other gay software divisions makes a lot more sense given the nature of the trial.
Would this breakup be beneficial to M$ in the long run or would leaving them together be better for them? Seems to me that it would be easier for the Free Software movement to take them out if their image is still tainted.
I agree with you totally, censorship is the spawn of Satan, but there is a problem with your proposal... who is going to enforce these laws? The US government? That's fine and all for pornography sites inside the US' jurisdiction, but you're forgetting all the sites that are based outside the US, some in countries in which none of its citizens find nudity offensive. Something like that just isn't feasible... My 2

In some places, having a static IP is either not an option or unpractical (meaning you would have to pay for a T1)
If you are defending those nuts in Kansas then... well... you ARE a religous zealot, and an ignorant one at that.
"And all God's people said amen..."
:-) Couldn't have said it better my friend, well put. This whole issue has me really steamed.
(I'm from Alabama btw, I see this kind of shit first-hand every day)
If you're religous, you need to get two things:
1) A clue
2) A life
Save your tithe money for something else, like a '666' tattoo on your forehead.

Netscape 4.6 displays the page flawlessly in Win98... so does IE5 for that matter. Odd
