    Gates could probably afford to buy his own decent-sized rocket and add a 1000sq ft. personal room on the space station complete with wetbar and jacuzzi-fuge.

    If I had bill gates $, i'd be philanthropic.. I'd just be extremely careful how that money is spent.

    In my mind, we should go back just because its -there-, and america needs something to feel good about now.

    Though Gates has done some good things with his money.. He's opened/equipped a library in TN, to start with.

    I just wish we could robin hood ol' ellison. The man needs to be knocked off his high horse. But you won't see me in tights anytime soon.

    The economic conditions and overall attitude of the IT world was a lot less foreboding then. In the IT shops i've been in recently, Linux is a word not to be thrown around, especially on anything the investors may read. If, say, HURD or a BSD could do such a trick, i believe it would take at least $x amount of time before the world would be ready for it.

    I will take no stance on this issue, as i only work with things that are profitable to me - I'm not a religious fanatic when it comes to Linux, *BSD, or any other operating system - I'll defend them all on their benefits and acknowledge their weaknesses. But i do need to propose the question: Do you think any other "upstart" operating system could gain the popularity and momentum of Linux?

    Well, i tend not to declare the homosexual thing. The second part is just as stereotypical as the views of windows are on slashdot. And the name i took from the Rush Song Analog Kid - but since it was taken on IRC, i changed it to boy.

    And i've heard all the jokes.

    I'm assuming your name is from the occasional Mr. Obvious skit on bob & tom?

    It'd just make the "mainstream" IT community reject linux, and its users, even faster. [They] We've decided, more or less, on an engine for the car, the highway has been built, some people just like to play bumpercars.

    Linux is a segway. It claims it will change the world; some people try it out; some people implement it mainstream; Most people just stare and say "uhh." the world just isn't built for it yet.

    [To appease the BSD Zealots: Linux is a tricycle, *BSD is a Segway. If you are not a BSD Zealot, ignore this line.]

    UNIX is a Freightliner. Good when you need a lot of power and a big footprint to haul a massive amount of.. stuff.

    Windows 2000 is an Automatic Transmission Ford. Good enough for the average person, they don't have to worry about it too terribly much. Most mechanics know how to fix them.

    Win2K server is a nice, large Dodge. Good for hauling midsize loads. Can still be fixed by most mechanics, if they are adequately skilled. Can be upgraded to Cummins Turbo Dulie model with extended bed if neccesary. Maximum of 32 Wheels.

    The analogies are endless.

    I have no problem with advertising. If I get something of quality for more or less free, i expect to have to watch something I may or may not find interesting (And i'm of the mind that i'd rather it be targeted, than not.) Now, i'm not an expert on economics or anything, but it seems to me slashdot is a -tad- too jumpy when it comes to stuff like this. As mentioned a bit earlier, they've been doing this on radio for ages.

    [Note, the below doesn't neccesarily state my views, just an interpretation of the circumstances. The comment may or may not be based in rational thought; The statement has been engineered for slashdot audiences].

    Has anyone else noticed that, if you havent entered your own URL, your url is set to http://slashdot.org/? Now, in a way, that could be interpreted as slashdot branding your comment. Say, for instance, if your post was quoted somewhere, in its entirety, that would be analogus to having one of those annoying "Come read at www.yahoo.com!" banners at the bottom of a mail. Doesn't seem very slashdot-like to me. How about have it default to, say, NOTHING like it did a few months ago.. or better yet, to the slashdot meta thread?

    Ya know, anywhere else, this would have been the end of the matter. But here, most people will just seek the opinion of 10 16 year olds who begin their posts with "IANAL, but.." then say the collective grey matter would outweigh your professional statement.

    I have to admire you. You haven't given up on slashdot like I have. Either that, or your FUD filter is broken.

    Only reason I mention this is i love it when a statement is made by someone completely in the know, and then is more or less ignored.. Kind of like "NO! NO! It makes sense, but it's not what I want to hear! NO!" response.

    1994.. Running my BBS locally.. Wanted to multitask... installed Desqview.. wow.. leet! Its like dosshell.. Only.. not! Oh, crap.. LORD is running slow on node 2.. time to tweak QEMM.. lets see if we can get that extra 2K out!

    1995.. OS/2 warp comes along. I install it - that extra ~100K on top of 640 is LEET!!! I never go back.

    I have to wonder.. How fast would Windows 3.1, DOS, or OS/2 boot on a 1.4 Ghz Athlon? :)

    I mean, we've even taken a step further in the wrong direction - now AMD doesn't even specify processor Mhz! *WAH!*

Working on getting back into school (God, had I had the mindset i have now 5 years ago, i could be well on my way to a Masters right now.) Needing to work on making mind become like sponge. Speaking of education - What's your doctorate in, if I may ask a blatantly off-topic question?

    After the first guy was publicised on /., I had more than one new entry in my e-mail box from someone spamming their resume.

    Now.. I see three possibilities here:

    (I'm using "he" as the subject here. Women, typically, are not this dumb.)

    1: He formed the idea himself, out of extreme desperation for a job (Been there, done that.. just didnt spam)

    2: He got the idea from the original guy.

    3: He got the idea from slashdot. THANKS SLASHDOT.

    The bad thing thing was how the movie strung you along to believe that he was actually sane the whole time. Even the whole scene where Nash was being shot at while speeding along in the car. I know its hard to imagine, but it they made it seem real enough

    I for one am getting tired of the "Surprise Ending" theme thats been going on since the sixth sense (or fight club, whichever was first). It was good the first few times.. It's getting old now. Find a new hook or go back to mindless entertainment. I vote for the former.

    Occasionally I like a nice almost-mystery, such as with K-PAX and Contact. But thats not exactly the same thing.

    ABM was good - but part of me wishes that they would have structured it differently.

    But, a-la Boys Don't Cry vs. The Brandon Teena story, i'm sure it won't be long before there is a John Nash documentary.. or maybe there will be one on the deeveedee.

    I plan on doing that. Unfortunately I also plan to go to college and heed the advice of another - and take astronomy / cosmology courses eventually. The local astronomy club meets on the nights when i'll likely be in school.

    Another problem I have is i live in Nashvegas, TN. The sky isnt *TERRIBLY* bright, but it is fairly difficult to find a nice, remote area where farmer joe won't shoot me because he thinks im ruffin up his cattle. I don't even understand how our local observatory operates - its only a few miles out of city limits.

    Maybe if they offered like a small tax break or something, people would be more likely to donate organs. I mean, otherwise, you're not getting anything, except a good feeling (oh. thats right. you're -dead-.) I'll donate any organs they want of mine - i'm not going to need them. Who wants a liver?
