AD aware, per their website, detects and deletes the following types of spyware: Web3000, Gator, Cydoor, Radiate/Aureate, Flyswat, and Conducent/TimeSink as well as the non-adware Comet Cursor. Did I just hear a rounds of cheers?
Ad-aware will remove most of the garbage on your windows box. Be careful however when removing reg keys... there was some mention about a bug? in the program that eats your reg.
Also... programs such as AudioGalaxy's satilite proggy will try to install gator by default. Gator is a crackwhore to remove too...
I started up an ISP when I was 15 and helped build a successful web hosting company from the ground up. However, when most of the kids my age were out partying and getting trashed on a Saturday night, I was getting drunk with the occasional worry about my server's uptime and if someone was trying to 0wn my boxes. Despite the stress I had, working at a young age taught me to be responsible and it gave me valuable skills that have given me an edge in college. I know how to work under deadline; I work well in teams and with others, and most of all I've gained a tremendous amount of knowledge on how to sell myself. The greatest thing I have learned from my working experiences in the past was how little I actually knew when I thought I knew so much. Now that I'm a little older and wiser (now 22), I can pass down some of my knowledge to younger geeks and feel proud, because it was an older geek who took me under his wing, and really changed my life for the better.:)
I'm just saying that worms are here to stay, no matter what form or shape they use to spread. (e-mail or via exploits) So we need to protect users from themselves.
How long do you think it'll be until there are law's against wearable computer's while driving like the NY cell phone ban. If talking on the phone is distracting, what about P0RN!!
Code Red, Sircam... they are just the tip of the iceberg. Can you imagine what would happen if a virus similar to Code Red were infecting windows 95/98/Me boxes instead of those running NT/2000 with IIS. ISP's and other corporations need to seriously look at installing filters such as the procmail sanitizer. I have installed this on several system's and it catches over 150 viruses a day, and notifies those infected on how to remove the virus from their system. It's only a matter of time until the Next Code Red hits... one that isn't so easily tracked and acts with a lot more malice (ie. random smurfing/flooding, reg eating, changing number's in excell doc's, reformating outgoing e-mail, posting personal information to usenet, ect.)
I don't know about Rob, but any company Alan Cox works for is good enough for me. Linux is Linux, and damn it, we need to support all distributions and stop being so snobby. We need to quit these X is better then Y distribution wars and focus on becoming a better operating system for all. Each distribution out there brings both good and bad features to the table. Maybe if we all work together instead of sit on elitiest high horses we can actually take some market share away from Micro$oft so we won't have to worry about poor security and a million viruses connecting to our port 80's. I don't know if X is better then Y, but I think every linux distribution I know seems better then Windows. Peace out...
