What system to go with depends on what OS you have on your desktop computer. Do you run for example Windows XP all heavy IDE-disc-operations makes your computer a real pain in the *ss to work with. To avoid this, SCSI could be nice. (I think Windows 2000 was alot better in this aspect). With a good OS like Linux there is no problem though.
Since Episode I/Jar Jar Binks my instant reaction when hearing the words Star, Merchandise and Wars is: sell crazy someplace else, we're all stacked up here.
I've just started reading the Book of Atrus (the first book (cronological) in the Myst series) and the first 50 or so pages were a bit boring but after that its starting to get my attention. Havent played the games though. As for the Dune-miniseries; if its the one that's approx. 4.5h long I think it rocked!
(DISCLAIMER: English is not my native langugage so please excuse bad formulations/spelling.)
The examples you give are analogous in most aspects but this particular case differs in one, in my opinion, very important detail.
A 1200MHz-processor is probably a little more expensive (ok, maybe not in itself but the resarch to get there and blablabla..) to manufacture than a 900MHz-processor.
In practice there isnt any difference in cost to produce (burn) a full cd or just a half-full upgrade-cd. So if they want to sell the OS as any other commercial product I really understand that they wish to prevent this kind of thing.
I do agree that it was a little bit lazy of Apple to do this and I would probalby exploit it myselft if I ever wanted to run OSX.
Im I MSc student and I have hopes for making money in the future doing the thing I love: coding revolutionary new stuff. But after reading alot of slashdot posts going like this: "..And some of us DO believe the right of ownership ends when you cross from atoms to bits. YOU know that. I know that. So why are you even prefacing your argument with that statement, when you KNOW most of the readers here will immediately dismiss it offhand, thus completely invalidating your rant?.." how am I supposed to do that? As a hobby after I come home from my ordinary 9-5 job? That software wont be any quality stuff you know.
If my post wasnt clear enough, Im pro-Dolby on this one.
Start flaming me if you want, just do it so that I understand where I go wrong.

Quantum cryptography can be used the same way as OTP with the MAJOR advantage that you can send the key along with the message.
So in comparision, ordinary OTP is NOT perfect.

Hmmmp..suck my sig.
"She did it while I was in the shower. I had to redo it so I could see for myself."
