  2. New RHCE on Which Linux Certification? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I just got my RHCE last week. I've been using Debian for years, but since my office uses Red Hat I got certified so that I'd know better how to support the boxes in my office. Without violating the NDA, I would say that it is a mix of Red Hat specific material and general linux knowledge. My previous experience with Debian still put me ahead of my other co-workers who didn't have as much experience in general with Linux. However, they do go through all the RH specific tools for doing things, but in the end a lot of the time I still come back to using a text editor and hacking the config file by hand.

  9. Re:KDE's appearance on LinuxPlanet Reviews KDE 3.0 · · Score: 1

OMG! Anyone who actually considers Win whatever astetically pleasing is doing some major hallucinogenic drugs. I would have to say that KDE has been much better looking than Windows. The major problem with Linux on the desktop for the average user isn't that it's harder, or even the software. It's that they're afraid of change. A lot of people have trouble just using a computer and for them to have to relearn everything they already know, is going to be hard on them. Also figuring out a better way of installing software wouldn't hurt. Packages are nice, but I know a lot of newbies are still confused by rpms. Also directories named things like /usr/bin and /mnt don't make much sense to newbies. Something called C:\Program Files is a little easier to understand.

All that aside, with a good distro like Mandrake that has mature tools to do configuration and software installation a lot of this can be overcome, and once you get someone using it on a daily basis, then the rest follows.

It's about time the geeks started pushing back. We've been sitting on our laurels too long, bitching on /. about how the DMCA, etc, are taking away our freedom to code, exchange information, and innovate. But this is the first I have witnessed geeks playing the game. Change doesn't happen if all you do is make speeches to geek audiences, we need a voice with the people passing these stupid laws. God bless um, I don't know how much shot a geek funded PAC has got. But God bless um anyway. Then again, some of the most powerful lobbying groups in the country are those not funded by big business but those funded by the people. Groups like AARP and NAACP. So with that in mind, we might just have a shot of being heard.

I think you just stepped on some toes, including mine. I home brew beer, and I don't drink it to get drunk. Beer has a long and colorful history, and has been enjoyed through the ages. Many people don't agree with you. Personally I like the taste of beer, now if all you have had is Bud Coors and Miller than I can understand why you don't like beer. However, there are some very good microbrews, and even things like Sam Adams can be very enjoyable. And not all beer is incredibly bitter, bitterness is a quality that is affected by the ingredients. A very strongly hopped beer like a Pale Ale will be bitter, however, I find that beers like Guiness, and Sam Adams Spring and Summer ales to be much less bitter. Guiness is almost creamy, and I've considred trying it on pancakes, and Sam Adams Spring and Summer ales are very mild, and in the case of the Summer actually have a slight fruity flavor to them. Before making a statement "All beer sucks" I sample something more than just the ass beer that fills the shelves and coolers of most gas stations an convenient stores.

I'd have to say you're right in your remark that in a corporate environment people don't know enough, and that most non-tech people don't know anything about Linux. But the writer of the article is a tech writer for the Wall Street Journal. I'd assume that a tech writer for theh Wall Street Journal would be somewhat tech savy, and would also be well informed on what big businesses are doing. With Sun, IBM and even Dell offering Linux servers, and as I said companies like Merrill Lynch switching to Linux, it's becoming hard to ignore. And yet a tech writer for the Wall Street Journal still calls it a renegade OS.

I'm sorry to get on a rant, it's just that someone decided to pick on my favorite OS and like a good little Linux zealot I had to get all worked up and get on my soap box. What do I know anyway...I'm just a college guy, that somehow got his girlfriend to run Mandrake on her desktop, and actually like it.

  17. Not a very competent tech writer IMHO on Bad Review for the Zaurus · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm somehow disappointed in the Wall Street journal for making this man a Tech columnist. I understand that most people aren't tech savy and that news usually is for the masses. However for a tech writer to talk about Linux by calling it, "the renegade operating system that many techies worship.", is beyone my comprehension. In this day and age Linux is no more renegade than any other OS. Linux is increasingly becoming the OS behind big businesses, and especially the web. With companies like IBM, and Sun backing it, and with companies like Amazon and Merrill Lynch using it, to call it renegade only illustrates how ignorant he is. If you don't like Sharp's PDA fine, but don't knock an OS because you didn't like one experience with it.

  18. Market Share? on Allchin Admits MSFT Violated the Law · · Score: 1

I don't care about market share. Market share does not dictate whether or not a desktop operating system is viable. I use Linux everyday as my desktop os and I'm quite happy with it. I have also managed to convert my girlfriend and her roomate. Neither of them is incredibly tech savy, and they have no problem using Linux on a day to day basis, to browse the web, talk to friend, trade files, write papers, listen to music, etc. If they can do all that on linux with minimal frustration I would have to call it a viable operating system.

  19. I think it's different on Allchin Admits MSFT Violated the Law · · Score: 1

With Linux you can choose to not run KDE. Sure konqueror is somewhat imbedded into KDE, it operates as the file manager as well as the browser. However, I can just as easily run Gnome, or IceWM, or enlightenment or Sawfish which does not have an imbedded browser. Even while running these environments I still have the option of running konqueror, or Mozilla, or whatever other browser I want. This is because the core of Linux is the kernel, and everything after that is just fluff. It makes it more usable sure, but I still have the option of stripping it down, or not using one particular component, while stilll maintaining a viable, and usable operating system.

And in talking to my friends, and coworkers I'd say that I'm not alone in my feelings. Unless the RIAA finds a new sound, or a few people release some big albums their profits are just going to slip further.
