We have a 2013 Volt and a 2012 Maxima SV - both would have MSRP'ed around $42k when new. Even thought the Maxima has nicer leather and a great engine, I like to take the Volt whenever I have the choice because it drives so nicely.
Also, even though I drive it in sport mode 100% of the time, (I am definitely no "hyper-miler") we've averaged 151MPG over the ~17,000 miles and routinely get 38 - 42 miles to the charge unless temp's are over 100 or under 40 F - in which case you lose about 5 or so miles of EV range. The Maxima averages about 23MPG.
Until you drive one, you can't appreciate how smooth the thing runs, no downshifting to accelerate, no engine vibration (until you deplete your battery).
If people are going to pick on the Volt, pick things that deserve it: * Heater is weak and sucks a lot of battery power to run (a heated steering wheel like the Leaf has would go a long way to compensate for this) * Front air dam scrapes on everything * No spare tire * Somewhat complicated center stack controls (although I hear Ford's system is worse) * Only 2 seats in the back (this one is the main reason we don't own 2 Volts)... the drivetrain is definitely NOT one of it's weak points.
For starters, it was supposed to be a pure electric, not a hybrid.
AFAIK, the Voltec platform has always been shown as a modular, series hybrid setup with the ICE as one option. It could be replaced with a fuel cell, more batteries, Mr. Fusion, etc...
Yet the sticker price remains the same, because they already had to price it cheaper than they could afford, and it's currently priced at almost twice what they had originally aimed for.
Actually, the sticker price just came down $5000 for the 2014 model year.
How about this "people who own 40% of total assets only pay 18% of the total tax burden." Life does not seem so rough Except that we are not taxed on our assets in the USA (at the federal level) - only on our income.
I believe if you include local property taxes that 18% would increase greatly for the wealthy.
You can plug in a USB ethernet or WiFi adaptor and get everything over the internet.Unless this is different on the newest DirecTivo's, then the USB ports are not active (unless you hack it)
My ex-wife wrote a bunch of hot checks that left me with a screwed up ChexSystem record for a while in the early 90's - I just used a savings account for a couple of years. Anyone can get a savings account and depost checks into it with no fees.
As far as the policy of sending you a check, it's probably mostly to fight fraud. I used to work at the returns desk at Target in a while back and people were pretty good at trying to scam us. For instance, once thing that someone did was to buy a ton of Polaroid 1-Step film, return it to another Target store without the receipt - then she would buy a bunch from Price Club (Costco/Sam's club kind of place) where they sold it for a couple bucks cheaper. Then she'd return it to our store with the receipt that shows she paid cash. Not a huge amount of money, about $30 "profit" to her each time though. Luckily, security caught on and when we told her that we'd be mailing her a check, she said "never mind" and took the film with her.
As with many others here, I've been using CRT's for the majority of my life with computers since the Timex Sinclair 1000 (and before that with an Atari 2600). I've got better than 20/20 according to my last eye exam (about 18 months ago), even though my parents and siblings all have worn glasses since they were kids. (Guess I'm the freak of the family)
Agreed. A coworker of mine couldn't belive it when he was trying to show off Ridge Racer to me but I was busy playing Rally-X!! (Which I actully found more fun than Ridge Racer!) I doubt he's old enough to have played it in the arcade. I loved that game.
Unfortunately, many schools won't let you bring peanut-anything in due to possible peanut alergys. I'd check with the school nurse/office beforehand. (no I'm not kidding - my son's preschool has a blanket ban on it)
> Hey! Nintendo uses firewire for the GameCube controllers and GBA links.
Really?
So are my two WaveBird's putting out wireless Firewire?:-)
Seriously though, this makes me want to hack together a firewire--gamecube controller plug adapter and see if I can get 'em working on OS X.... wait a 'sec. I'm too lazy for that. One of you other geeks go do that and report back:-D
How about rendering video while playing MP3's and surfing, bloated, Flash animated web sites.

... Altevec is the same idea as MMC was for the pentium pro, only slightly better (which isn't saying much considering MMC).
Um - do you use AltiVec optimized apps side by side with MMX ones? (I'm guessing you meant AltiVec and MMX, even though you miss-typed both)
One example: distributed.net 's RC5 crack program on my G4/400 (384MB) running OSX benchmarks at 3,516,375.64 keys/sec
My Dell Laptop with 700Mhz PIII (256BG) running OSX benchmarks at 1,688,832.57 keys/sec
Intel/AMD may beat PPC on many things, but it sure as heck isn't on vector processing!
Remember, though, NEXTSTEP/OpenStep used Display PostScript and, by the time your NextStation Color came out, it was faily mature and optimized. Aqua uses a new system (Display PDF), it'll get better with optimization.
I don't think they are runflat.
I concur.

All the reason for a flat-tax, IMO.

Too bad it's Windows only :(

Yeah, those are showstoppers. You better stay off OS X.

screen resolution/shape
dual monitor (spanning) support

Software bundle (i.e. Tony Hawk vs. Quickbooks)
Yes. True. (And wouln't that rock!)
But based on the bugs Jobs ran into during his demo I doubt it will be any time in q1.
I was wondering what you meant by "this summer".
What's your point? The end of the 1st half of 2005 and the end of q2 are the same date.

How is this "giving to the poor"? And quote the CEO who said that - bet you can't. (Ebineezer Scrooge doesn't count)
Define "can't compete" (or as you spelled it, "compeat" ;-) )
What do you do with your computer that I can't do and be as productive with my G4? (I'm not saying there aren't things, I just want to know)
Games don't count - that's what DreamCast/PS2/etc... are for!
Sorry - meant Win2000 on laptop. (brain fart)

Anyone tried this? What does Code Red do when it swallows it?
