The problem with Winnt is that it is a pain in the ass to fix when its broken. I work in a call center, and I deal with most M$ os's, from Dos up to Win2k, and I dread the days when I get Winnt calls..
This is something I wouldn't really expect from Intel, IBM I can see funding some money, but Intel.. I wonder whats in it for intel?
Ah well, its a good gesture, I probably will still buy an athlon over a p4 (1.4ghz chip for about 130 bucks, they just cut a lot of prices today) but it puts intel in a better light then before.
I bought one of those netpliances from that guy from Oracle, forgot his name, and I forgot the name of the machine I bought (shows how much I use it)
But there were many sites that showed how to make it a full fledged computer, and it only costs 200 bucks. Sure it comes with a cyrix processor, and all the other stuff is low end, but for just a simple xterminal it works good.
Unfortunately, arresting a programer for giving a speech about how he broke the encryption is hogwash as well. (did I really say hogwash...)
Ya it is hogwash, because its not true. Dmitry did not get arrested for giving a speech, im not sure where you heard that from, but it seems like just about everyone on this board thinks that.
Dmitry and his company, created software in Russia, and he was abiding by all the laws in his country. They then decided to make this software availble to U.S. Citizens over the internet. This is where he broke U.S. Law. He is now trafficing (sp?) in a copy protection circumvention device, or whatever they like to call it.
So yes, it is hogwash, but not for the reasons you think.
Disclaimer: I think the DMCA is evil, I dont agree with it, but it is law as of right now. We can not like the law, and maybe one day it wont be law, but as of this moment it is.
He sold software IN THE U.S. which conflicts with the Nazi law called DMCA.
He is not getting arrested for making the software, he is getting arrested for selling it within U.S. Borders.
Its almost like, lets say I make some sort of crazy weapon or bomb in a country that does not have a law about that. I then put it up on the internet, and someone from the U.S. buys my bomb, which would be illegal in some way im sure with some law here in the U.S. I then come to the united states, and sure enough I will probably be arrested.
I am not saying that it is right, but that is what the law says..
That is pretty interesting actually, it might have something to do with Dmitry coming over to the states to do his presentation at Defcon. That may have pushed adobe to the point to where they presented the evidence they had to the FBI, and got him arrested.
I dont think adobe would want to do all that over again for his boss, and Im really not too sure why the feds dont arrest him, my only idea is that they do not have enough evidence (which was provided by adobe for dmitry) to convict him.
I haven't followed the timeline of events so i may be wrong, its only a guess..
The reasoning is this.. Not that I side with the gov't here, but its reasonable..
The company elmsoft or whatever sold copies of thier said product on U.S. Soil, and that is why he is in jail right now.
If you were to somehow spit your gum from U.S. Soil to Singapore, then yes, you may be arrested, but just by spitting gum out on U.S. Soil, you do not effect Singapore in anyway whatesoever.
If his software was not available here in the U.S. he would not be in trouble.
Not that I agree with these laws, but that is what got him in jail.
I think the timing on your keyboard may be a bit off though =P

This probably happens quite a bit with any game, the marketing departments will do anything to make their product look better then the rest. It really doesn't matter much I dont think, we will see how nice it looks when it finally comes out. The screenshots now aren't even coming from a 'real xbox' but just a mockup of what they think it will be like.. should we whine and cry about that also?
Note: I am not planning on buying an xbox at all, im happy with my ps2..
1, There are few developers, apart from M$ and Bungie willing to develop for it and those that do have little or no console experience. btw who whats to play pc games on a tv anyway.
Not that I am an xbox fan at all, but the system is not your basic console, anyone who can program using the x86 platform/directx should be able to pick this up quick, so that should not be a problem. It would probably be easier to code for an xbox then it is for a ps2, doens't mean that one is better then the other, but I dont think its an issue. I still am not gonna buy an xbox, just wanted to clear that up.
2. It is overpriced for a consoles (around $299) and underpowered for a computer 600mh
Standard price for a console.. and whos to say its underpowered.. have you seen what a p3-700 can do without having to worry about having crap running in the background, mainly windows or whatever. This processor will be only for running the game and thats it, so Id say that whatever is in it should be ok.
4. It is badly designed for a console, who whats a hard disk in their console, what do you do in case of a harddisk crash.
Ok, now im starting to wonder if your joking or not... Im not sure about you, but id love to get a hard drive for my ps2.. True, id probably just use it for an mp3 jukebox, but it would be a handy thing to have. Of course it then lets game developers slack a bit on bug fixing, because they can always release a patch later that would be installed on the hard drive.. but anyway, it would be useful to have, most of the consoles that are out now are planning on releasing a hard drive kit. Hard drives dont crash that much anyway, id say its better to have a hard drive there in case you need it, then not have one and wish you did =P
BTW Direct3d that is in directx 8 is not all that bad. Once again, id rather see it using OpenGL or something like that, but directx has matured quite a bit and can do some impressive things, especially with nvidia helping develop Direct3d.
In any case, i dont think the xbox will sell, the only reason I can see why is because of Halo, and ill get that for my pc before I dish out money for an Xbox.
I remember something from a while ago, it was for a car stereo, and it would sit under your seat, and you would hook up an input to it from your stereo. It would be bolted right to the chassis, and when deep bass hit, it shook the car to simulate the 10-30hz frequency range.
It seems like an easy task to put one of those in a backpack, I think the deal was called a transducer, but I am not sure. I looked up what a transducer is, and its an antenna, so theres probably another word for it..

Tivo had this thing where if you wrote them an essay about why you should get a free tivo from them, they would give you one for free. One of my friends here at work won one, I tried about 3 times, but I think they realized that I was making all my essays up and never gave me one.
Anyway.. Does anyone know if tivo or any of the other devices will work with Digital Cable (from Adelphia@home if that matters)?
Didn't that happen a few years ago, with apple liscensing out the info needed to create "clone macs". I think they then realized that it was not helping them and stopped doing that.
The powerpc chip is nice, but I think apple enjoys the simplicity of having closed hardware, and then tying an OS to it, makes things much easier/better for them.
Fixing an apple computer is fairly easy compared to a pc, and I believe that is one of the things that apple strives for, its a fairly low maintenance box.
AFAIK, anything you create on your own is automatically copywritten, you can put the copyright symbols on the document or whatever you created, but yes, it is automatically copywritten when you create it.
Its even worse when a company says it lost X amount of dollars due to piracy this last year, but do they tell their stockholders that they lost X amount of dollars that year.. No they dont, because they didn't..
Interesting article I thought, so I look at the comments, and 90% of them are people correcting the title of the article..
I think after the first or second post we get it, the title is not perfect, but im a bit confused, as I think many of us have seen an incorrect title of an article before, so its been known to happen. Reading crap about 4fps is this and that, who gives a rats ass, it was a typo, get over it..
Actually it requires you to replace www with archives
I know its tough, maybe you should try the converting www to archive for dummies book, i hear it works wonders..

Because your also paying for a USB upgrade from the serial connection.
I think X10 should be boycotted for this popunder ads they are putting everywhere..
Its amazing how much that company is shoving advertising down the throats of internet users.
