I recently upgraded my PC of about 5 years. Realising that I hadn't kept completely in touch with advancements in PC technology, I went forum mining.
I knew I wanted to play Dragon Age: Origins and I wanted it to run great. Searching related forums for Dragon Age I found plenty of people who had helped other with issues. Quite a few of these people list their current system spec in their signature.
Once I had a basic idea that was within my budget I cross referenced this with a few searches through over-clocker forums. Again there where many people who assist each other and also quote their system specs.
I found this process to be a fairly quick way on buying an on-budget (well, I did go a little over but what the heck) system made up of compatible components that were up to the job of playing the games I want to play.
I have been using a laptop around the house with a wi-fi (802.11b) connection to a PC upstairs. As the PC was located in the backroom I could get a great signal down to the bottom of my garden (about 25 meters). All my tunes available, great.
Then, broadband became available in my area (north west UK) so the two PC set-up evolved into a wf-fi network complete with access-point and ADSL modem.
The downside is that the phoneline comes into the front of the house so that's where the modem and access point live. The signal has now degraded such that I'm considering another access point upstairs to serve the back garden (it's still great around the house).
I'm also thinkinig of getting one of those USB FM-transmitters, not unlike those used with the iPod. The plan is to have a cheap radios around the house (esp. the bathroom) that can tune into the signal and I can ditch the laptop except as a juke-box front-end.
Has anyone else used such a transmitter with any success?
My wi-fi based music collection has been a hit when friends come around as the playlist allows everyone to queue tunes instead of being subjected to my Hawkind collection:-)
Got to be the best 4 player game I have ever played. Its a boardgame that starts with the second Roman invasion of the UK and ends with the aftermath of the battle of Hastings. Well balanced game that takes a minimum of 3 hours to play with experienced players. The board is divided into stragetically important regions of the UK. We've taken it with us on various trips - the idea being to play a game in every region on the board. Started this with a few friends years ago, managed to get a game going up in the Orkney Islands and Caithness. Got a long way to go to do'em all. but hey, Whats the rush?
Oasis have been working to get a whole bunch of people "talking" for years, mission overview here. The membership list is quite comprehensive. Lets hope something useful come of it.
The.net FLC also supports classes for creating weak references to objects. You can resurrect your objects, after they go out of scope if garbage collection hasn't as yet removed them. But at the same time setting a weak reference to an object allows for the garbage to remove them if another process requires the memory. Comes in handy for objects that are large and non-trivial to create.

I saw a demo of Earth Viewer at a conference the other day (http://www.earthviewer.com). Flying around the world, zooming in to sub-meter resolution. Terrain can be turned on for 3D and its linked to local info (nearest bar etc). Well worth a look. Who's that parked outside your house?

However more important to an employer, another employee could punch a friend in, making it appear as if they were there.
Would a scanned image or photocopy of your palm trick one of these things?
Not that I would encourage this sort of behaviour, of course.
