I will agree that Swing is slower than native widgets, but at least when you write a Swing app it will behave the same way on different GUI's. It can also have the look and feel of the default OS. I have Windows users who have said time and time again that they would NEVER run a JAVA app. Well, they do, but they just don't know it. Our apps look and act just like ones created with VB or C/C++. Our slowest desktop is currently a PII 300 with 64MB of RAM. It runs our apps fair. Our 600MHZ PIII's with 128MB or RAM run great.

So yes the speed will be marginally slower, but the JITs rock now, developers don't have 1 year of Java experience AND processors are generally 10X faster than they were in 1996. Also the amount of RAM a system has now is greatly increased.

Now if you haven't upgraded you computer since 1996, then I would say.

Ok I think that I know why they won't do this.

A TON of businesses switched to Windows95 from Apple when 95 came out. If Apple wants to maintain or even possibly grow their market share with businesses then they need Microsoft products. This includes the Exchange client (Outlook etc...).

So lets say that Apple ships OpenOffice with OSX. Microsoft could then stop or greatly slow development for I.E., Outlook, and Office for the Mac. This would force quite a few comopanies to switch off of the Macintosh platform. Or at lest take a long look at how a Windows XP machine would perform instead of a Macintosh.

My point with this is similar to Filemaker for the Mac. Apple now ships/supports mySql. That pissed of FileMaker and now they focus "most" of their development on other platforms. I realize that Filemaker is NO Microsoft, so Apple didn't really seem to care.

The best thing they can do is try and build OpenOffice to be a great Mac app. Then possibly put links for "free" downloads from their site. Even this might incur the wrath of Microsoft.

For everyones sake I hope OpenOffice gains a 20+% marketshare over the next five years.

My point is that everyone has this problem. Yes Linux has it more than the Macintosh and Windows, but for a FREE OS the developers do a great job.

I will try to answer you question. I use Oracle 9i DB and their developer suite. However we use Resin and Apache as our web server and application server.

Oracle provides some cool tools for their developers that allow you to create some cool JSP's without knowing much Java coding. They follow some good design patterns and their code CAN be ported to just about any Java Application server. I have done this to Resin and it works great. Having said that I don't EVER use their wizards, and beans. I do everything by hand. It definately takes me longer but I know what the heck is going on with my apps. However, for a ton of people the wizards and tools are great. I know of a bunch of lower level developers that can do some amazing work in a short amount of time.

For your statement about costing more. I don't agree with that. Once you port from Microsoft to Java, you don't care what platform it runs on any more. Your employer has the ability to very easily migrate to ANY platform later, it appears that they have just picked Sun and Oracle to start with. To be honest they could have picked a lot worse. I am a fan of JBOSS and hope that it gets better, but for a ton of customers it is not the best choice. Same goes for Linux. Just be thankfull that you WILL have a choice in the future without having to touch your code! If you design it correct, then you could even swap out Oracle easily.

Now the effort is considerably smaller, and the benifit is that the Linux people will be more apt to "build" a "world" for NWNs'. Linux people tend to be a little bit more in to technology than their Macintosh and Windows counterparts, so if Bioware can get more servers out there and better online worlds then it will only help them with their windows clients sales.

The $185 cost to build a playstation 2 that Red Herring reported is before the cost to fab went down. From what I hear Sony is still selling the PS2 at a profit. I believe that the article mis-stated the facts here. Sony greatly reduced the price of the PS2 when it combined some of the core chips in to one chip.

I see a couple of problems here. One is that Nvidia and Intel will NOT sell their products at a loss. So Microsoft is going to have to pay them what they agreed to pay them in their contracts. Now if Nvidia and Intel can fab their stuff better and cheaper then they get an extra little bit of profit, not Microsoft or new Xbox customers. I am sure this is why Microsoft is wanting to talk to Nvidia about the price of the their graphics card again. I doubt that Nvidia will budge much. They know that Intel won't.

The second problem is that Nvidia and Intel would never work to combine their stuff on one chip. They don't care if it saves Microsoft money. Sony controls this process and it helps them a lot.

On the down side Sony needs to spend BILLIONS in R&D for the PS3 design. Microsoft will just go to Nvidia and Intel/AMD. They do have to spend some amount of money in R&D, but not what Sony and Nintendo do.
