Because we punish criminals and the risk of being punished is generally greater then the benefits of commiting the crime. We've also been conditioned to behave a certain way... so most people do... although when pushed seemingly good or moral or ethical people can do some pretty fucked up stuff. You will not get rid of crime Toby. You can try to reduce it, control it, limit it, and sure there are underlying factors for some acts... but you're not going to be able to eliminate all of it.
In a truly free society new technologies must come with laws that require transparency
Bullshit. If you mean all new technologies must have laws then what you're saying is before any innovation is allowed the politicians must have their own interests met first... I don't care to subject the pace of innovation and the growth of the economy to a bunch of politicos out for themselves or their single consituency.
If you mean only technologies used by the government... then you need overriding laws that can be applied to various situation. Otherwise, if a police force used technology in a new and innovative and non-intrusive way they'd be subject to have having the case tossed out of court because they used the technology without governing laws.
Because people are totally self-serving and fucked up. Don't fool yourself into thinking that it's environment or psychology or anything else. People are out for themselves and occassionaly they express that by committing acts that we consider to be crimes. Unless people can change their underlying motivation and have a real reason to do so... they're going to continue acting in their own self interest regardless of the consequences to others.
How about the money be spent on tools to allow police to quickly apprehend criminals and deter them from committing crimes knowing that there is a fair chance video evidence will be available?
The cameras that were used were a combination of private cameras and security cameras put up around a post office. This is not about a sophisticated government network of cameras used to track people (although those do exist in Philidelphia). It's about a resourceful police department. It's good to see a story about the cops doing some good.
No... it's the same process they used to create Gollum, accept Lucas has a better control on the technology and has real footage to use for the 3D models.
I haven't seen the new Rocky movies... the original was great, and it seemed like the second one had potential and then about half way through the movie they just gave up.
The only thing though that can save the new Rocky movie for me would be Carl Weathers speaking to Rocky from heaven and guiding him through the training... that would be absolutely fantastic! It would destroy the movie... but man that Carl Weathers is great. Carl Weathers.
Or see it, then pretend it never happened. Just like I did with the Highlander series...
What are you talking about? Highlander was good... but H2: The Quickening was amazing. Mulcahy's view of the future intertwined with the Highlander saga made for outstanding and highly entertaining cinema. Thought provoking even.
H3 was ok... Morahan's direction wasn't as crisp and insightful as Mulcahy's. But the script was good.
Harrison Ford will provide the voice of Indiana Jones but the "person" you see on screen will be a CGI recreation of Indiana Jones based on footage from the previous 3 movies.
Any parent who would not reasonably use tools available to them to enable their child to experience more of the world and demonstrate/proove their responsibility and trustworthiness is a poor excuse for a parent. Their lazy and cheap and worthy of our complete and total disdain.
This is not really an MS news story. It's really about the influence and credibility of bloggers.
Why it's not about MS -- MS is sending these out for two reasons. One, they want to establish good will... that's not illegal or unethical. They aren't asking the recipients to hide where they got the gift from. They're not attaching any requirements to the gifts. It's a gift. It's ok. Two, MS knows that Vista needs high end hardware to run well and they know that many bloggers aren't going to invest in the hardware to run early reviews... so in order to get reviews about real Vista features and not how slow it is and how much it costs MS is giving the laptops away. It's a smart business decision.
Can bloggers measure up? - So... MS sends these laptops to bloggers because bloggers have readers and readers make decisions based on the sources they trust. MS has recognized that bloggers have sway in the market, they're for real... they mean something now. That's a plus for blogging.
The test for bloggers is whether or not they'll reveal a potential conflict of interests or reject the gift. Journalists and corporations have policies about these things... do bloggers have the integrity to handle this gift without the appearance of compromise. That's the test and that's what this is really about.
Yeah, so I would agree that forcing a private company to do anything with their private cameras is going over the line.

Outstanding response.
Not a bad idea... I wonder how much donut footage we'd have :)
*why do people perform unethical crimes?*

Oh I'm sorry... you have to watch it high... It's really outstanding when you're smoking alcohol.
I'm sorry... what were we talking about?
Alas... I'm afraid I've fallen into cynicism.
that this was a sign of the coming of Duke Nukem Forever?
Seriously not funny. Over 65k people in the US alone died of Alzheimer's in 2004.
Everybody can have an opinion... but did you like the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies?
How often do you steal from Mark Cuban? Go Suns!

River Phoenix signing up as Indy's son? He did a good job in the last movie. Is he even available?
