Making it all the more possible to port linux to the Apple II, and don't you dare call it ridiculous. Progress has been made porting ELKS to the z80, and I see no reason that the 65c02 is any less worthy or capable.
The truth of the matter is, if I had to use an Apple IIe as my only computer, it wouldn't be that painful with enough upgrades like this. I spend better than 50% of my computer time in console mode, and when I don't, all I have open is Netscape and a dozen terminal windows. And as far as your game fix goes, I hope I can find the time someday to design the SVGA card I want to do for the Apple. As a teaser, just think 100mhz StrongARM doing accelerated blitting and vector functions, and maybe even to the point that Doom would run on the thing.
You'd have to settle for a g2 board for the 3k, it's limited in which accelerators it will accept. And if you haven't already, PLEASE open the thing and rip out the original battery. I just bought my 3000 a week ago, for $10, thinking I had such a great bargain. A 1/6th of the motherboard now has blue fuzz, and it will take me at least 40 hours of free time to repair it correctly. Damn you C=, for using cheap batteries (and murdering the coolest computer platform ever).
Amigas never shipped with an 060 either. Those were after market boards.
And to reply to the parent post, while an Apple IIe could never decode mp3's, I see no reason why someone couldn't design a real sound card for the thing, with enough co-processor power to do that also. It wouldn't be impossible, even to intercept the "bell" device in system memory, and play a nicer fm tone, giving it backwards compatibility.
Oh, and as for the questions regarding compact flash, he chose that undoubtedly, because CF is actually the same as IDE electrically. Only the mechanical interface is different. If you were to make a converter cable, windows or linux would even recognize it as a valid/dev/hdx device.
Yeh, it sure is. To have some stinky arab insult you by suggesting that your faith, whatever flavor it happens to be, is for sale, and as cheaply as a few hundred or thousand bucks. But in a country where the price of a goat is twice that of a "wife", anything goes, I suppose.
The religion teaches that all non-Jews are no better than animals, and can be treated as such. Under their religious law the only persons with any rights are Jews, and only they are considered to be fully human.
While I could argue every single thing you've said, you were very careful to make it unassailable. You messed up this time. "Fully human" in the sense that you mean it, is hard to apply to jewish law, since the subtlies of the words don't translate well. Jews that commit murder, whether the victim is jewish or not, are guilty of a grave sin, according to Judaism (then again, so are muslims, who do such, technically). I believe both sides though, are guilty of using twisted logic to excuse their actions as "self-defense" or some such.
"And if somehow they weren't that way, then I'm sure they'd be busy trying to bribe them into converting to Islam, like they do us atheists and christians. "
Nobody's ever offered me so much as a dime, nor have I so much as heard of a rumor of the practice untill now.
A good friend of mine lived in Saudi Arabia for close to 6 years, as some sort of contractor (He's explained to me several times just what he did, but I guess I'm too dense to figure it out). He was offered sums of money, even in US cash, to convert to Islam. The goverment of SA would actually pay some of it, and some of the others (I take it he got to meet important people from time to time) would offer money in addition to that. Apparently this practice is not only commonplace, but completely within the bounds of being a good muslim.
Please take note of a several subtle differences among your 3 examples. While the Nazis and the soviets thought nothing of massive genocides to deal with people they didn't care for, Israel has never once done anything to suggest that it has even crossed their minds. And if you were honest, you'd admit that genociding the palestinians would be the only thing that would stop their terrorism. (Note: Not that it is a solution, mind you. Worded a more diplomatic way, I'd say that the palestinians won't stop until the last of them is dead). Right there, it says to me, that even if they can be a bit heavy-handed sometimes, the Israelis are a bit more enlightened, and that it's unfair to lump them in with the villains that you have.
Another thing I've noticed is this. If a palestinian "freedom fighter" blows up a bus full of civilians, every single death he causes is considered a victory to be celebrated. Civilian, women, children, infants... it doesn't matter. Even with a twisted sense of justice, real men would only ever attack soldiers, or the politicians that command them. That's fighting your enemy, the palestinians are only capable of cowardice. Now, look at the Israeli side of the equation. When they kill palestinians, they specifically target those who commit these acts of terrorism. And sure, quite often it seems that palestinian civilians die too. The Israeli goverment expresses regret, and offers compensation. While not perfect by any definition (they are only human, after all) they seem to make the effort.
Then, why don't we dig up some pseudo-cultural-religious stuff. On the one hand, nearly all (arab) muslims quite obviously actively hate jews. Hate people they've never met, that have never done them any personal harm. I can't quite figure out if this is a hatred mandated by Islam or not (religious or cultural). Certainly the leading clerics say as much, so does that count? Do Israelis hate palestinians? I'm sure they do. But the rabi's don't go around telling them that it's their religious duty. Bessides, it's tough to warm up to someone from a different culture, when you can never be sure if he has 20 pounds of dynamite under his clothes. Now, as far as jews go, my understanding is that their religion is very different from this. Among other things, it says that you don't have to be a jew, to "get to heaven" for lack of a better way to word it. Judaism, it would seem, is a duty to adhere to an extended set of rules, and if you don't commit to those extra rules, you'll do just fine if you live by the basic ones (and though I don't remember those exactly, they are things like "don't commit murder" and the like). What's so important about all this? Well, while I'm no rabi, my non-jewish interpretation is that as far as they're concerned, muslims have a right to exist. More so than that, jews would never try to convert them (something that I find particularly cool about their religion). Funny, that certain Islamic schools teach arabs that it's their religious duty to kill jews. And if somehow they weren't that way, then I'm sure they'd be busy trying to bribe them into converting to Islam, like they do us atheists and christians.
You see, I look at the Israelis, and see a people that have been through alot of shit the last few centuries. And I see them being given this crappy little piece of desert that isn't fit for camels, and within 50 or so years, turning it into a military and economic power. And then I look at the arabs, and I see a people that for many centuries were the leading scientists of this world. Explorers, travelers, traders. While europeans were living in the dark ages. And for whatever reason, they threw it all away. And their tolerance for other religions (jews and christians, even hindus I believe, were welcome visitors, even citizens). And however their intolerance crept into the mainstream, I dunno. And now, in the last few decades, they seem intent on nothing but destruction.
You tell me, is there a single thing the Israeli goverment could do, that would change anything? Offer more land, more economic aid, more whatever? Or would the palestinians grab whatever was offered, slink back to their slums, and try to figure out how to use the "whatever" to go kill more jews? Look at it from the other side, though. If the palestinians started acting like civilized human beings, would it not lead to better conditions, at least in the long run? If there were no terrorist incidents for 12 months, the israeli goverment would be forced to ease up a bit. And the longer it lasted, the more easing up that would happen. The ball is in the palestinian court.
But that's the kicker. Genetically, there is no discernible differnce with these people (with the possible exception of some superficial stuff, skin color or whatever). They choose, note that word, CHOOSE, to be as they are. That is, they are subhuman by act, by deed, by choice. Besides, aren't you supposed to be arguing the holocaust was a fraud, pro-zionist propaganda to earn them undeserved sympathy?
Um, whoever modded you up as insightful, is clueless. You palestinian sympathizers are blowing your "oh please give us peace" lies way too soon, you have to wait until the Israeli's start believing them, and let down their guard. Granted, that could take up to 3 generations, and subhumans like yourself have neither the cleverness nor the patience for such a task. It will be fun when we (USA) come for you next.
It's not legitimate, it's wrong. Punishing an entire nation, one that is struggling beneath a recovering (sinking?) economy, because the IP lobbyists in yours wish to make an example of them will never be legitimate. If this was some issue that actually affected piracy one way or the other, you might have an argument, but the truth of the matter is, this is 100% insignificant in the scheme of things. I dare you to present any evidence at all (I don't expect proof, just some kind of evidence) that this reduces piracy, makes it easier to track down, etc. Something.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but even if failure to manufacture blank cd's with serial numbers is piracy in the US (which is dubious), it's a leap of logic to say that it is piracy under Ukraine law. And rather than show how damaging to US interests this practice is (which I doubt that it truly is) and lobby them to change their own laws, the US is penalizing them, something that should arguably be restricted to those nations committing human rights abuses and other truly horrible things. Which leads to my final question, do cretins like yourself always have your heads stuck up your asses, or do you pull it out from time to time, and wipe the caked shit from your eyes?
The truth of the matter is, they're forcing the Ukraine to raise manufacturing costs, and nothing more. To equate this with "piracy prevention" is absurd... show me one instance where software pirates have ever been caught, convicted, or located based on these numbers. Or even when the numbers assisted in such.
As long as they don't export them to the US, it's none of our damn business. The Ukraine is a "sovereign nation" and the only laws that apply are their own. If they choose to not implement idiotic IP laws, not only do I say more power to them, but humbly ask if I could apply for citizenship there.
And as for the accusation that they disregard the GPL, I find this ridiculous. It's only in a country like this, that a corporation like M$ might want to violate the GPL. Some "russian software pirate" loses nothing by pointing a customer toward the source code, or burning it onto a second CD for them (and charging them a fee for costs). You have some serious issues.
I still need one of these for my collection. That's the good thing about collecting amigas vs. collecting macs... no matter how you count them, there are less than a dozen amigas total. With macs, I have this beasty, a newton, a Mac 128k, a Lisa, and an Apple///, before I can consider it well rounded. And there is simply no way to complete it. (I have the apple set top box, all the a2's, quite a few 68k's, and even a few PPC macs, so I'm not just starting). Can these Netservers do localtalk though?
Though I agree that certainly the original poster meant A\UX, Apple did license AIX on a particular model of server, forget which. Was doing poorly, even before Jobs returned and decreed that all practical Macs were no longer welcome is his perfect vision of elitists the world over using Apple brand fashion computers.
You are sick. Why don't you buy an Apple I and fit an Intel mb in it, while you're at it. Guys, whatever the final count is on Beboxen, decrement it. People like yourself don't deserve to own classic computers.
With less than 2000 ever made (roughly 1200 66mhz and 400+ 133mhz machines, I believe), you're last realistic chance of getting one for less than the price of used car was several years ago. I have no doubt that up to 2 or 3 dozen machines will be available at this auction, but the faact that it's been posted on slashdot has surrely locked in the prices at something above $2500 per. Besides, you'd prolly just try to install linux on them.
Actually, it would be cool to know how you get such karma, if all you do is spout this insignificant drivel. It'd also be interesting to discover what a troll like yourself gets out of all of this. Maybe some sort of survival instinct drives you to be repulsively stupid, to keep threats at bay?

I keep wishing for some big tech breakthrough to tumble into the laps of a hacker like myself, that would let me escape all this. Teleportation maybe? Wrong. I have a standard account, and the first thing I bought was over $100, so they insisted on banking info.
It's really moot, though.
They keep changing their story, and their requirements so much, you can't keep up with them. Any money you have in your "account" isn't really yours at all, if they say so. I would be very scared to have more money in that account than I could afford to lose, which lately has been about $20.
As a matter of trust, how can you trust an establishment that claims they can make all their money through interest on the float, and that they are quick and easy to use, then over a period of 18 months starts adding fees here and there, adding no value, and apparently doing something that gives fodder to those writing paypal horror stories? I can't claim that such stories are true, but where are the rebuttals? Where is the free/easy to use account I had a year ago? Something screwy is going on.
I'm having loads of troubles though, AT&T Broadband is dicking around with the @home crap, and they've forced my dhcp lease to cycle 3 times in as many days. This is a bit different than it has been, I went 13 months before it ever cycled when it was mediaone, and then only during a prolonged thunderstorm. Lately though, I don't know that I'll be able to run it with the ways they are screwing things. Wouldn't be suprised if I got an email in the next few days telling me that I'll no longer have my own IP, and that they'll only support IE6 with the SOCKS proxy settings.
BIND peculiarities also makes it unlikely I could find a host that could do this for me, let alone cheaply. They'd have to do quite a bit of reconfigging. Unless cavtel offers DSL in my area soon, the project could be forced to die.
Maybe the fuckwits who have turned this planet literally into Hell itself, maybe if they'd not make it such a horrible place to exist...
...then maybe people wouldn't need to escape from it so often.
And barring that, playing video games is hardly the most destructive escape a person might choose. Damn. These people could be trying to find a vein to inject shit into their bodies, not staring blankly at a Everquest screen. Enough with the complaints already.
Yes, and it should also be compatible with most of the clones, such as my Franklin 2100 (with it's cool internal floppy drives).

Heh. Compared to the pic, Z80's kick ass. I'll take their traditional instruction set and 3 registers over a pic any day of the week.
Actually, I like both dammit. Still, the z80 kicks ass. Zilog, we will miss you.
