AFAIK indie costs are generally higher. They don't produce CDs in the same numbers as the big 5, so it costs them more per disc. They don't have their own distribution set up so they need to piggyback on another record company or do it themselves (which is more expensive). The staff to artist ratio is generally a lot higher (more salaries, supplies, offices, etc) which makes for more overhead. The indie labels don't all have their own recording studios. etc... etc...
That's all I can think of right now. Anyone else want to add?
IIRC, awhile ago whoever owned Star Trek went around the web and sent C&D orders to people running fansites who used trademarked logos and such. Sounds kind of dumb, doesn't it? They're alienating their fan-base. I assume whoever owns Star Trek had a reason for doing that and Apple has reasons for what they're doing now.
Several music stores in Canada have 'listening stations' where you can bring your CD up to the employee and (s)he puts it in the machine for you.
Smaller music stores have little listening stations with maybe 3 CDs that you can pick from. If you ask nicely, they'll probably put one in there for you.
Other small music stores don't have listening stations, but will probably play something on the store stereo for you.
I can't stand it when people try to justify trading illegal mp3s or warez by saying "I'm just doing it because the prices are unreasonable. They're trampling on my rights." Then they download a picture of Che, start listening to RATM (without paying for it of course), and feel like activists.
It's bullshit plain and simple. There's tonnes of free music at reasonable prices. Go see a local band. Go to mp3.com.
I've read about some boycotts of the RIAA and the message (from the ones I've read about anyway) is "don't buy the CDs but keep downloading the music." By listening to their music you're supporting them. You're saying that their music is the only music worth listening to. A true boycott of the RIAA would involve not buying, downloading, and even listening.
I didn't say that this was _the_best_ way to improve scoop.
But that doesn't really matter. It's fairly obvious that this person didn't write the code to help scoop out.
Maybe I shouldn't have written that part, but the point I was trying to make, is that this is just code. It's up to the attacker to use it. And while we are probably a little angry with this guy right now I don't really see the point in blaming him.
This guy just said he was a developer didn't he? He didn't claim responsibility for the attacks.
If he wasn't resposible for the attacks then we can't exactly get angry with him, can we? Like DeCSS, this is just a tool. It's up to you how you use it (although DeCSS was written with a much more altruistic goal). There are valid uses for this as well (improving Scoop comes to mind)
In my mind, the blame falls directly on the person who used this code.
Just a side note: Can/. get the IP of ACs from their post? (Just in case this is the same guy).
The designer is not being tried for this. He testified in court though.
He was under investigation, but his gov't cut that out and apologized. Not only was he not tried, but he was given an award from his country (mainly because of DeCSS). With the money he bought a high end DVD player.
I was referring more to the obvious spam that is repeated over and over.
The Jenna Elfman stuff that's been appearing recently. The Goatse.cx stuff. The Magenta syringe guy (haven't seen him in awhile though). The people who post stories.
You're right though, I do post crap occasionaly. The crap I post is usually topical (I try) and is probably posted because I'm bored at work. On a boring day I'm on/. so often that I just write up my instant reaction and then post it. I really should try to post after I've thought about it for a bit.
Too bad you didn't log in. Afraid we might see what crap you've been posting lately?
Doesn't Word have a 'History' or something that lets you see changes (and thus stuff that might have been meant to be deleted) that have been made to the document?
It explains in the opening paragraph that if you download the pdf you are expected to pay for it. I don't see how this is any different from SK's site.
Not a bad read. I've got a couple problems with it though.
"And, except that all newcomers to/. arrive as AC's themselves, or maybe they haven't learned about changing their thresholds, and so they see ALL OF IT. Every last damn word."
Isn't the default threshold at 1 for ACs?
I don't agree that everything below 2 is crap. There are some good posts that remain as 0s and 1s. They're just not as interesting/insightful/etc. as other posts. Moderators do tend to catch the spam and mod it down to -1. So all spam ends up as -1. I do agree that this is wasting moderation points and also discourages people from reading at -1 (and seeing badly modded posts).
A little revision wouldn't hurt. Not that I'm doing anything to fix the spam problem. It'd be cool if/. could just make it so only the spammer saw his postings, then he'd presumably get bored and go away (I don't know how well this would work for ACs on/. though).
Kuro5hin.org has a no tolerance stance on spam. Freedom of speech != spam. Don't know if the/. editors would have time to go through everything and delete the junk. Maybe they could hire someone... Although some people would probably scream bloody murder.
There's a couple of things that I don't like about this:
1. Would you want anyone to be able to find out where you live from your webpage?
2. If you were to run a strictly Internet business, why would you have to corolate that back to meatspace? The fact that you're located in X location (which isn't Silicon Valley or whatever) might hurt your ability to do sales.
Maybe I'm misinformed, but I thought Mcdonalds.com was purchased by a university student who then traded it with McDonalds for a T1 to his school or something. (Am I completely wrong?)

Of course not. It's illegal to export the code, not sell it.
That seems like it's the wrong way around.
Wasn't 2 Live Crew's music banned in the states?
On the (gov't funded) CBC television and radio you occasionally hear the word 'fuck' late at night.
Is there somewhere I can read about this GWAR thing?
Oh, and by saying "In Canada..." I didn't mean to imply anything about the US, it's just I don't know anything about music stores outside of Canada.

And you'd think that the idiots would give up posting crap to /. too... but they don't.
Or maybe they do, but there's enough new ones to fill any apparent lack of crap.
It's the same thing with cheaters. There are enough newcomers to fill the gap.

Just a thought.
Do you have any examples of this? I haven't heard anything about this.
C-S, in my opinion, is one of the most entertaining online games right now. Valve made a smart move, picking them up.
Wasn't it a Hotline server?
AFAIK this has nothing to do with software. Your money is going to 'nsync instead of Microsoft. Much better, isn't it?
It explains in the opening paragraph that if you download the pdf you are expected to pay for it. I don't see how this is any different from SK's site.
Damn. This is way better than my joke. You had me laughing my ass off. Mind if I use it in my online comic? I'll give you props for the idea.
I think that they should include this feature in the next version:

What about the whole war for liberation? Y'know... Independance day and all?
