your "friends" are just idiots pulling your chain - either that or watching TV must be excrutiating for them. your gfx card just reads out it's frame buffer at whatever rate you've determined - that framebuffer can be updated at whatever rate your system can manage. we can ALL detect flickering at 100hz - only because the screen REALLY IS flickering - wave your hand in front of it for proof.
well, he MIGHT - but the speed of DVD burning is simply dictated by the DVD recorder - the G4 chip in the iMac can make the MPEG2 in around 1.5x running time (800Mhz) and HOPEFULLY the world's amateuer videographers aren't making hour+ movies - coz if they are prepare to be bored rigid
well, you're voice recognition problems are determined mainly by the fact that VR ALWAYS needs good hearing (ie a good NC mic), and no-one ever bothers with that. Believe me, a 1Ghz PIII with a load of RAM is plenty for good VR if your mic is good. define photo-realistic PROPERLY. Flight Sims? You can NEVER model real life perfectly - so give it up already. recording video without frame skipping is a piece of piss - i've been doing it for YEARS. As for your last point - what are you on about? Is that just a random string of words or are you actually trying to build a meaningful sentence there?
it'll be an interesting comparison seeing as all of those apps aren't available for any other platform. Steve's shootouts ar classic dog & pony shows - the underlying fact that Poermac G4s are excellent graphics machines ends up getting buried in the resulting furore over the unfairness of the comparison. shame. but the same shit happens with mainframes and their TPC benchmarks, and PCs with their Quakemarks. c'est la vie.
and not even just in the 3rd world either. a couple of years ago a french woman was discovered to have kept an unpaid servant living in a shed for something like 40 years. difficult as it may be to admit, I think enslaving of others is a basic facet of human nature.
you know, I wish it WAS just Blade Runner that had bee repeatedly revised over the last 20 years - at least Scott had a case for doing so - WTF is Spielberg's excuse with ET 20? And Star Wars? Don't even get me started on that bouffant twat Lucas.
I've had one go south - for instance my copy of Another World from 1992 (designed for System 6 compatibility) only plays for a minute under OSX 10.1.3/Classic before unexpectedly quitting! Lucky I finished it 10 years ago then...
that's also precisely the way that fual taxation pans out in the UK. Incidentally, we pay around 80 pence per litre for unleaded fuel here. What's that, $1.14? You really have to wonder what they do with all that money. Even WITH the astonishin cost of running a car in the UK, it's STILL more sensible than using public transport.
what on Earth are you talking about? it would take an A4000 about a WEEK to do an FFT that my Powermac can do in a second. How long would it take an A4000 to open a 4096x4096 JPEG image? A day? Grow the fuck up, and start using computers as tools instead of masturbatory aids. My Amiga 500 had to have it's case physically twisted before it would start - every time - what a piece of shit.
I remember those Mac emulation set-ups for the Amiga - you were basically required to spend HALF the cost of a real Mac on hardware, rob a ROM and then enjoy your "Mac" on an interlaced display. A complete and utter waste of time and effort, like so much of the Amiga scene, sadly.
so I've heard... mind you, I actually do video compression for a living and NO client has EVER asked for their material to be compressed to DivX. Not a single one! We did get a DivX movie in once to be output to DigiBeta - looked absolutely awful. I've played with both DivX and 3ivX encoders and - take it from me - it doesn't come close to WM7 or 8, real 8, SV3.1 QuickTime, Zygo or VP3 or 4. Not even close. And no decent compressors for QT?? Eh? I wouldn't know about ripping DVDs really - I've done it a couple of times but really, what's the point? I can save a disk image of a DVD on an HD if I want to - but why recompress? Just to steal it?
Nope. DivX is a hack of a codec MS PROPOSED for MPEG4 and had REJECTED. So, not only was the original codec NOT MPEG4, the derivative isn't either. Both are obsolete anyway compared with Real 8, Win Media 7/8, Sorenson 3.1, Zygo Video and On2 VP4. Wait for the MPEG4 standard, then use that. In the meantime use QuickTime for it's flexibility and stability.
Look, OpenGL support under Windows is always going to be hamstrung by MicroSoft, because of MS' rabid NIH syndrome. It's just as well MS don't standardise on OGL, coz the day they do is the day the O becomes MS, and we're all fucked again. There's no point using MS and then complaining about it. Just say no. DON'T run Windows. DON'T but an X-Box/. Just say NO.
no, I don't want to give 'em a handjob - their browser is some way from perfect, believe me. But, shit, I spent a load of cash on my PC, It's nice to know it can do SOMETHING - better than all those PCs filling offices all over the world cranking through a fucking flower box screensaver. What a way to use up the world's natural resources! WTF do they stick all those stupid Energy Star stickers all over monitors when a little Post-It telling users to set their 'saver to "blank screen only" would be a THOUSAND times more environmentally helpful? Yeah, I used to get a mild thrill out of running dnetc fast, until my model got obsoleted - now it's a badge of shame (except in the x86 world, where it still looks fast). Anyhow, the numbers are true, and therefore DO illustrate the amount of wasted potential that typically heats up peoples offices these days.
yep, absolutely right - if I'm browsing Slashdot on my G4 450dp with iTunes running, I can run dnetc from the terminal at 7.5Mkeys without any noticeable performance hit (if I use Omniweb at least, other browsers don't seem to be as threaded and get all choked up on me). Just proves how much excess power modern computers have - 8Mkeys when running by itself, 7.5 Mkeys when running with Omniweb and iTunes.
agreed, it does seem a little strange not to include MPEG4 - you could conceivably use it for interactive menus if nothing else - and that means authoring with standard tools. Not many people seem to realise that the current DVD-Video standard also fully supports MPEG1 (although NOT Layer 3 audio for some inexplicable reason).
oh, is there some Sci-Fi on TV now? Kids' TV is great for KIDS, I have been known to watch a bit of kids TV in my time (mostly during my childhood funnily enough). From what I've seen of Farscape, it's a decidedly inferior product - a kind of feeble Buck Rogers / Star Trek / Space Precinct cross breed. It certainly isn't Sci-Fi, certainly IS for kids, and certainly doesn't hold a candle to even Captain Scarlet, let alone anything better.
err... I think electron drift speed is a few milimetres per second - not quite the speed of light. Do you also think that when someone shouts at you across a field that air shoots out of their mouth at 700Mph? You might want to contemplate a Newton's cradle at some point and see if you can learn something from it.
what? how can HALF be MOST?

I've noticed how much Formula 1 and WRC cars resemble American "muscle" cars. proof if proof were needed indeed.

and what the fuck is that supposed to mean?

BT has had it's day - if you can, get Tele2 or Blueyonder installed - GIVE BT NOTHING, THEY HAVE FAILED US TOO LONG
in Alberta? WTF is this story all about?

what a load of crap - this place isn't a democracy and bandwidth is both finite AND costly. are you six years old?

so let me get this straight, you're asserting that the SPEED OF LIGHT is 30cm per second?? has the whole world gone crazy here?
err... I think electron drift speed is a few milimetres per second - not quite the speed of light.
