I take your point, but the fact remains that the FASTEST SGI workstation is treacly slow - in absolute terms - vs the fastest Intel-based 'station. ILM couldn't care a fuck how much it costs, they want cutting edge speed (hint - they didn't buy their previous solution based on cost, they bought it based on capability).

I work in TV, and I know first hand that SGI is losing out to commodity hardware running Linux, Windows and even to the Mac. SGI gear is just about hanging on thanks to discreet - but it's just a matter of time before an inferno for Intel product lands and a lot of Onyx racks hit eBay.

Unless, of coures, SGI fights back...

    not even close

further proof that commodity hardware is killing innovative companies like SGI, and a FREE UNIX is helping it happen.

Linux is great for a company like ILM which is stuffed full of coders who can adapt it to suit their needs, not so good for many other companies.

I don't hate Jews, but I hate the state of Israel - does that make me anti-semitic? (I would say "some of my best friends are Jewish" but they aren't, though I did once go out with a really beautiful girl called Jessica who is Jewish, I used to work with a really nice guy called Alex who is Jewish and I really like the Jewish bakery in Stanmore where I used to get my walnut wheat cakes in the morning). It's time for the ourage of Israel to STOP, aqnd the only way it's gonna stop is if America makes it stop, coz they're paying for the whole fucking show anyway.

huge for a pda - but JUST the right size for a tablet. Rumour has it that Apple may get into the tablet game, I hope so - I just hope they don't get into the Airpanel game. A compact pen-driven, optical driveless, keyboardless MacOSX notebook is a VERY attractive concept to me, some pitifully crippled techno bauble is of no use whatsoever.

my Mazda Xedos 6 (2L V6 24v DOHC VRIS) makes just over 170bhp - I'd certainly expect an extra 1000cc to make a bigger difference - in fact, I think the 2L V6 as used in the Jag X-type (an evolution of MY motor) makes around 190bhp.
